    Notes: Abstract A Bragg crystal spectrometer using cylindrically curved crystals is designed to focus a divergent X-ray beam. The spectral resolution and precision of focus is determined by the quality of the concavely curved crystal. The analysis of the quality of the crystal was done using a triplecrystal X-ray spectrometer, comparing parallel and antiparallel X-ray scans of the third curved crystal, determining flaws resulting from the bend. Topics discussed include the derivation of the crystal's quality, conditions of alignment for the Bragg reflection, and X-ray beam width contributions to the FWHM. Organic and inorganic crystals with varying values of Bragg angles are used.

    Notes: Abstract The Ultraviolet Spectrometer and Polarimeter on the Solar Maximum Mission spacecraft has observed for the first time the longitudinal component of the magnetic field by means of the Zeeman effect in the transition region above a sunspot. The data presented here were obtained on three days in one sunspot, have spatial resolutions of 10 arc sec and 3 arc sec, and yield maximum field strengths greater than 1000 G above the umbrae in the spot. The method of analysis, including a line-width calibration feature used during some of the observations, is described in some detail in an appendix; the line width is required for the determination of the longitudinal magnetic field from the observed circular polarization. The transition region data for one day are compared with photospheric magnetograms from the Marshall Space Flight Center. Vertical gradients of the magnetic field are computed from the two sets of data; the maximum gradients of 0.41 to 0.62 G km−1 occur above the umbra and agree with or are smaller than values observed previously in the photosphere and low chromosphere.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper, we describe results of a Solar Maximum Mission (SMM) guest investigation to determine vertical gradients of sunspot magnetic fields for the first time from coordinated observations of photospheric and transition-region fields. Both the photospheric vector field of a sunspot, derived from observations using the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center vector magnetograph, and the line-of-sight component in the transition region, obtained from the SMM Ultraviolet Spectrometer and Polarimeter instrument, are described. From these data, vertical gradients of the line-of-sight magnetic field component are calculated using three methods. (1) The vertical gradient is derived directly from the observations assuming a height difference of 2000 km between the photosphere and transition region. (2) Using the observed transverse photospheric field, the initial gradient (ΔB z/Δz) z = 0 , is calculated from the condition ▽ · B = 0. (3) Using the photospheric line-of-sight component as the boundary condition in a potential-field calculation, the extrapolated potential field at different heights is compared to the observed transition-region field; from these comparisons, an average height difference is derived and used to calculate the average vertical gradient (Δ B z/Δz). Comparisons of gradients derived from these three methods show consistent results for methods (2) and (3). Deviations of the calculated potential transverse field at z = 0 from the observed transverse component are investigated to assess the validity of gradient calculations using method (3). Since the field is shown to be very close to a potential distribution, we conclude that the vertical gradient of B z is lower than values from previous studies and the transition-region field occurs at a height of ≈ 4000–6000 km above the photosphere.

    Notes: Abstract A detailed study of the quasi-periodical post-flare variations on November 6, 1980 in X-rays, UV lines, microwaves, and metric waves confirms that these variations were predominantly thermal phenomena and occurred solely in the corona. Only the short-lived impulsive components that preceded all or most of the individual variations were of non-thermal character and penetrated down to the transition layer. The chromosphere (in Hα) did not participate in any part of these events, in contrast to a flare that appeared at the same place a few hours later. However, the X-ray emission of these variations was so strong that the transition layer and the chromosphere definitely should have been enhanced through heat conduction along the magnetic field lines. The expected heat flux at the top of the chromosphere coming from some of these coronal brightenings was 60–80% of the flux expected in the flare at 17:26 which gave rise to a 2B flare in Hα (Figure 8). Therefore, we suggest that the variations were produced in a coronal plasmoid with closed field lines completely detached from the lower atmospheric layers (Figure 9b). We also give reasons why such a detached plasmoid can be expected to be formded in the very late phase (some 4–5 hr after the onset) of a major two-ribbon flare.

    Notes: Abstract For almost 30 hr after the major (gamma-ray) two-ribbon flare on 6 November 1980, 03:30 UT, the Hard X-Ray Imaging Spectrometer (HXIS) aboard the SMM satellite imaged in 〉 3.5 keV X-rays a gigantic arch extending above the active region over the limb. Like a similar configuration on 22 May 1980, this arch formed the lowest part of a stationary post-flare radio noise storm recorded at metric wavelengths at Nançay and Culgoora. 6.5 hr after the flare a coronal region below the arch started quasi-periodic pulsations in X-ray brightness, observed by several SMM instruments. These brightness variations had no response in the chromosphere (Hα), very little in the transition layer (O v), but they clearly correlated with similar variations in brightness at 169 MHz. There were 13 pulses of this kind, with apparent periodicity of about 20 min, until another flare occurred in the active region at ∼ 15:00 UT. All the brightenings appeared within a localized area of about 30000 km2 in the northern part of the active region, but they definitely did not occur all at the same place. The top of the X-ray arch, at an altitude of ∼ 155 000 km, was continuously and smoothly decaying, taking no part in the striking variations below it. Therefore, the area variable in brightness does not seem to be the footpoint of the arch, as we supposed for similar variations on 22 May. More likely, it is a separate region connected directly with the source of the radio storm; particles accelerated in the storm may be dumped into the low corona and cause the X-ray enhancements. The X-ray arch was enhanced by two orders of magnitude in 3.5–5.5 keV X-ray counts and the temperature increased from ≲ 7.3 × 106 to 9 × 106 K when the new two-ribbon flare occurred at 15:00 UT. Thus, it is possible that energy is brought into the arch via the upper parts of the reconnecting flare loops - a process that can continue for hours.

    Notes: Abstract The Ultraviolet Spectrometer and Polarimeter (UVSP) on the Solar Maximum Mission spacecraft is described, including the experiment objectives, system design, performance, and modes of operation. The instrument operates in the wavelength range 1150–3600 Å with better than 2 arc sec spatial resolution, raster range 256 × 256 arc sec2, and 20 mÅ spectral resolution in second order. Observations can be made with specific sets of 4 lines simultaneously, or with both sides of 2 lines simultaneously for velocity and polarization. A rotatable retarder can be inserted into the spectrometer beam for measurement of Zeeman splitting and linear polarization in the transition region and chromosphere.
