    Notes: Electrochromic, crystalline WO3 films have been deposited on glass substrates at ambient temperature by an oxygen-ion-assisted technique using oxygen ion energies ≥300 eV and oxygen ion to vapor molecule (WO3) ratios, γ≥2.5. After lithiation, the resulting LixWO3 films exhibited 〉50% reflectivity in the near infrared, and the reflectivity dispersion was fit by a Drude free-electron model, yielding the Drude parameters: plasma energy, Ep=3.3 eV; and the loss (damping) parameter, EΓ=1.0 eV. (The bound electron permittivity, εb, was fixed at 4.0.) These values are comparable to those obtained with WO3 films rf sputter deposited onto substrates at temperatures 〉420 °C. During the ion-assisted deposition the substrate temperature reached approximately 90 °C, caused primarily by radiation from the WO3 evaporant source. This indicates that economical low-temperature substrates, such as plastics, could be used. These results suggest that practical electrochromic smart windows for energy-efficient buildings might be produced using ion-assisted deposition techniques.

    Notes: An exact solution to the problem of time-dependent, one-dimensional diffusion in two parallel layers backed by an impenetrable wall is presented, together with graphical results for some numerical examples. The solution can be generalized to more than two layers, and it is expected to be useful to several areas of applied science. This includes (a) ion diffusion in multilayer thin-film solid-state ionic devices such as electrochromic windows and rechargeable batteries, (b) mass diffusion of neutral species (e.g., dopants) encountered in the fabrication of multilayer thin-film integrated electronics and integrated optics circuits, and (c) heat diffusion through a multiplicity of parallel layers, each of which have different diffusion coefficients.

    Notes: A nuclear reaction analysis technique using the p,γ reaction, 7Li(p,γ)8Be, occurring at approximately 440 keV, (half-width≈12 keV), has been utilized to determine the lithium concentration profiles in multilayer electrochromic window ("smart window'')/rechargeable battery cells when in their "colored''/charged and "bleached''/discharged states. The lithium profiles have been observed to shift according to the cells' states, thereby providing direct experimental evidence for the so-called rocking-chair model for such structures.

    Notes: Abstract A semi-implicit finite element scheme is proposed for two-dimensional tidal flow computations. In the scheme, each term of the governing equations, rather than each dependent variable, is expanded in terms of the unknown nodal values and it helps to reduce computer execution time. The friction terms are represented semi-implicitly to improve stability, but this requires no additional computational effort. Test cases where analytic solutions have been obtained for the shallow water equations are employed to test the proposed scheme and the test results show that the scheme is efficient and stable. An numerical experiment is also included to compare the proposed scheme with another finite element scheme employing Serendipity-type Hermitian cubic basis functions. A numerical model of an actual bay is constructed based on the proposed scheme and computed tidal flows bear close resemblance to flows measured in field survey.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper, we propose a high-level state-based dependency description and structuring formalism for flexible manufacturing systems (FMS). This extended cellular automaton model (ECAM) is designed to capture the behaviour and performance of a large complex concurrent system in an easier and more concise way than is possible with other contemporary FMS models. Concurrency problems of FMS can be clearly identified by the model. The model is defined mathematically as a quintuple by adapting the cellular automaton. A set of graphical symbols is also defined to represent the states of the model. The proposed model can serve as a formal specification and documentation tool for an FMS. It can also provide a basis for modelling important characteristics of FMS which includes conflict resolution, dependencies and starvation of resources. In real applications, it can serve as a conceptual model in the FMS design process. Based on this model a prototype system has been developed to generate a set of executable grammar rules. With appropriate extensions, the system can be used as simulation and performance analysis tools.

    Notes: Summary The ultrastructure of steam-exploded wood from the softwood Pinus radiata D. Don was examined by electron microscopy in order to determine the reasons for increased porosity and enhanced susceptibility to enzymatic hydrolysis. Ultrastructural changes were observed in the form of lignin redistribution and swelling of the cellulose framework. Lignin showed evidence of melting, having contracted into well defined agglomerates suspended in a web of cellulose. Using lanthanum and gold tracers of known particle size the pores in the microfibrillar cell wall have been examined. Cellulose regions were shown to contain numerous pores greater than 2 nm, while lignin agglomerates did not contain such pores. Treatment with NaOH resulted in lignin being smeared over the porous cell wall material — hence blocking pores and reducing digestibility.

    Notes: Abstract Two thermophilic xylanases (xylanase II from Thielavia terrestris 255B and the 32-kDa xylanase from Thermoascus crustaceus 235E) were studied to determine if they had different and complementary modes of action when they hydrolysed various types of xylans. Partial amino acid sequencing showed that these two enzymes belonged to different families of β-1,4-glycanases. Xylanase II achieved faster solubilization of insoluble xylan whereas the 32-kDa xylanase was more effective in producing xylose and short xylooligomers. An assessment of the combined hydrolytic action of the two xylanases did not reveal any co-operative action. The sugars released when the two thermophilic xylanases were used together were almost identical to those released when the 32-kDa xylanase acted alone. The two xylanases were able to remove about 12% of the xylan remaining in an aspen kraft pulp. This indicated that either one of these thermophilic enzymes may be useful for enhancing the bleaching of kraft pulps.
