    Description: Although the objective of Ocean Drilling Program Leg 191 was to install a seismic monitoring station and to test a hard rock reentry drilling system, several good, near-continuous sedimentary core sequences were recovered during the cruise. Two holes, 1179B and 1179C, yielded an upper Miocene to Pleistocene diatom record through an expanded section with excellent recovery. Because diatom species included in both low-latitude and high-latitude biostratigraphies are present, zonations for the equatorial Pacific and northwest Pacific are applied to the sediments. The oldest zones from each zonation that are represented in the cores are the Nitzschia miocenica Zone and the Rouxia californica Zone, respectively. Only one zonal boundary is not observed within the diatom assemblage, that being the top of the Nitzschia jouseae Zone and base of the Rhizosolenia praebergonii Subzone A (equatorial Pacific). Preservation is good overall, and sample abundances vary from rare to abundant. This would be an excellent section for further biostratigraphic, paleoclimatic, and paleoceanographic study.

    Description: During Leg 172, Site 1063 was unexpectedly found to contain intervals with rich assemblages of diatoms, both in species diversity and absolute abundance. These intervals correlated with well-defined gamma-ray attenuation bulk density lows. Sampling of the upper four cores at 10-cm spacing provided an in-depth examination of subtle changes in the diatom assemblages associated with these lows. The biostratigraphic data gathered in this study are presented here along with numerous illustrations of the common taxa observed. The modern ecological affinities, as reported in numerous literature sources, of many of these taxa are collated by species. The diatom species observed in this material presently occur in many different parts of the Atlantic as well as other areas of the globe. Some species are restricted to warm waters, and others are absent from warm waters. So, a brief discussion of specific environmental restrictions, and their bearing on indication of sediment transport, is included in this report.

    Description: Sites 1096 and 1101, two hemipelagic sediment drift sites on the continental rise off the northwestern Pacific margin of the Antarctic Peninsula, contained calcareous nannofossils in the upper intervals of each site (downhole to 168.37 meters below seafloor [mbsf] in Hole 1096B and 121.1 mbsf in Hole 1101A). The occurrences were sporadic and observed to be confined to fine-grained intervals. These intervals were interpreted on board to be interglacial and often contained foraminifers as well. Calcareous nannofossils exhibited a reliable stratigraphy during an interval when other fossils groups were absent, quite rare, or reworked. In total, nine events and three zones were recognized in this study. The base of the Pleistocene was not recorded with calcareous nannofossils, the oldest datum being the first occurrence of medium Gephyrocapsa spp. at 1.69 Ma. All events have been correlated to the paleomagnetic record for each site.

    Description: During Ocean Drilling Program Leg 178 we cored nine sites on the continental rise (Sites 1095, 1096, and 1101), continental shelf (Sites 1097, 1100, 1102, and 1103), and in an inner shelf basin, Palmer Deep (Sites 1098 and 1099), along the Pacific margin of the Antarctic Peninsula. Fossil diatoms are a key group that provides age constraint for these shelf site sediments to allow reconstruction of Antarctic Peninsula glacial history. This paper provides the systematic paleontology of diatoms applied in biostratigraphic and paleoceanographic studies and includes a total of 33 plates. Taxonomic confusion in previous reports, including biostratigraphically useful species such as Thalassiosira inura and Thalassiosira complicata, is discussed. These systematics and taxonomic discussions help to provide a reference for Neogene diatoms in the Southern Ocean.
