Notes: Abstract Although remnants of a Permian volcanic arc in the South Island of New Zealand have hitherto been considered to comprise a single volcanostratigraphic unit, recent work in the southern part of the arc has revealed the presence of two lithologically distinct terranes, only one of which is definitely Permian in age. Major and trace element analyses of representative specimens show that these terranes are geochemically distinct. Comparison with modern volcanic arcs indicates that this ancient arc in the South Island was a paired arc system made up of primitive island arc tholeiites to the east and more evolved andesitic rocks to the west.

Notes: Summary Effective conservation and the use of plant genetic resources are essential for future agricultural progress. Critical to this conservation effort is the development of genetic markers which not only distinguish individuals and accessions but also reflect the inherent variation and genetic relationships among collection holdings. We have examined the applicability of the random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) assay for quick, cost-effective, and reliable use in addressing these needs in relation to collection organization and management. Twenty-five decamer oligonucleotide primers were screened individually with a test array composed of individuals representing a range of genetic relationships in Brassica oleracea L. (vegetable and forage cole crops). Over 140 reproducible, polymorphic fragments were generated for study. Each individual of the test array exhibited a unique molecular genotype and composites specific for accessions and botanical varieties could be established. An analysis of similarity based on amplified DNA fragments reflected the known genetic relationships among the selected entries. These results demonstrated that RAPD markers can be of great value in gene bank management for purposes of identification, measurement of variation, and establishment of genetic similarity at the intraspecific level.

Notes: Abstract cAMP plays an essential role duringDictyostelium development both outside and inside the cell. Membrane-bound receptors and adenylyl cyclase are responsible for sensing and producing extracellular cAMP, whereas a phosphodiesterase is responsible for maintaining a low basal level. The molecular events underlying this type of hormone like signalling, which are now beginning to be deciphered, will be presented, in the light of cAMP analogue studies. The importance of intracellular cAMP for cell differentiation has been demonstrated by the central role of the cAMP dependent protein kinase. Mutants as well as strains obtained by reverse genetics will be reviewed which lead to our current understanding of the role of intracellular cAMP in the differentiation of both stalk and spore cells.

Notes: Abstract Almost pure andradite and intermediate members of the andradite-grossular series (gros40–49, and 47–54, py0–3, alm0–3, spess0–2, hydrogarnet0–3), often framboidal in habit, are widespread in metabasites including lavas, minor intrusions, and volcanic sandstones and breccias metamorphosed under prehnite-pumpellyite and pumpellyite-actinolite facies conditions, possibly extending into the zeolite facies. Coexisting phases include iron-rich epidotes (100 Fe*/Fe*+Al=22–34), pumpellyite, prehnite, actinolite, and chlorite, electron microprobe analyses of which are given, as well as quartz, albite, and calcite. Zoisite (100 Fe*/Fe*+Al=1–5) and iron-poor epidote (100 Fe*/Fe*+Al=11–18) occur in 2 rocks in pseudomorphs after plagioclase together with more iron-rich epidote, but not in close association with the garnets. Coexisting pumpellyite is iron-rich (FeO* 9–14%) in the prehnite-pumpellyite facies and iron-poor (FeO* 5%) in the pumpellyiteactinolite facies. Chlorites and actinolites vary widely and sympathetically in FeO/MgO+FeO ratio. Andradite is also described from a stilpnomelane-actinolite-hematite-bearing andradite quartzite of the pumpellyite-actinolite facies. Conditions of formation involved temperatures of 300 to 400 ° or less, at pressures up to a few kilobars. A wide range of oxygen fugacities is possible, but $$\mu _{CO_2 } $$ in the fluid phase was low. Grandite and chlorite are incompatible in the pumpellyite-actinolite and greenschist facies in the presence of quartz but the 2 minerals occur together in some pumpellyite-actinolite facies assemblages as a result of incomplete reaction and/or local deficiency in silica. In the greenschist facies the association is replaced by epidote-actinolite±hematite and sodic amphibole. Whereas at medium to high grades of metamorphism andradite and grandite are characteristic of skarns irrespective of $$\mu _{CO_2 } $$ , at very low grades they are found in mafic volcanic rocks and volcanogenic sediments as well as in certain cherty rocks of unusual composition, rodingites, and serpentinites, where $$\mu _{CO_2 } $$ was very low.

Notes: [Auszug] The clone pTR48 contains a 2-kilobase (kb) cDNA insert derived from the human transferrin mRNA8. Using this clone as a probe, a set of five overlapping cDNA clones was isolated containing, in total, 5 kb of sequence derived from the human transferrin receptor mRNA (Fig. 1). The mRNA is slightly ...

Notes: Abstract The use of paint as a coating for toys intended for sale on the European market is controlled by a European Standard (EN 71-3: 1994-European Standard for the Safety of Toys, Part 3—Migration of Elements). This work is the result of a preliminary study organised by the European Commission to produce a new paint reference material which can be used to validate the test methods given in the European Standard. The migration of elements from painted panels and comminuted paint produced by the Laboratory of the Government Chemist, (U.K.) was studied. Several methods were used in this certification exercise and this work reports the recults of neutron activation analysis and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry to determine the migration of As, Ba, Cd, Cr, Hg, Pb, Se and Sb into a simulated stomach environment. Replicate extracts obtained from paint samples gave a precision of within 10% for most elements by both analytical techniques for the paint panels and for the comminuted paint sample. This preliminary study has shown that the standard method can provide reproducible results for each of the paint materials studied and indicates that the study should be continued to produce a fully certified paint reference material.

Notes: A space–time, locally identical to the usual de Sitter space–time but globally different because of a kink in its light cone field, is described in various coordinate systems. Two separate coordinate patches are needed. Each original patch is geodesically incomplete and so is extended by the Kruskal method. The space–time, which is not globally hyperbolic, is shown to be foliated by a family of hypersurfaces each of which is homeomorphic to a three-sphere but none of which is everywhere spacelike.

Notes: A homotopy classification scheme is developed for Lorentz metrics that are defined on (2+1)-dimensional space-times of various topologies. The "kink number,'' in the sense of the Finkelstein–Misner kink number in higher dimensions, is discussed, and examples are presented of kink metrics that satisfy the Einstein field equations in 2+1 dimensions.
