Description: Fossil pollen and spore records provide highly creditable proxy data to investigate the past environmental changes such as palaeovegetation and palaeoclimate. Pollen database promotes past environmental studies from local to regional and global scales and from qualitative to quantitative reconstructions. This is of great significance on exploring the interactions among past vegetation, climates and anthropogenic disturbances at large spatial scale and long temporal scale, to better understand the evolution of the earth system. In this paper, a fossil pollen dataset of China is compiled, by synthesizing 372 original or digitized fossil pollen records including 790 pollen taxa in China’s land and ocean during the late-Quaternary (since 50 ka BP). The dataset includes site names, latitude, longitude and altitude, pollen data source, sample type, sediment length or span, sample number of each site, dating method and dating number, age span and reference, as well as the fossil pollen percentage of each sampling site. The pollen data, mostly published from late 1980s to present, are concentrated in vegetation regions of temperate and subtropical forests, temperate grasslands, temperate deserts and alpine vegetation on the Qingzang Plateau. Sample sites are distributed at different altitudes from deep sea to high Qingzang Plateau, but the majority of the sites are located between 0–2 000 m. The dataset comprises of 178 raw pollen records (47.8%) and 194 digitized pollen records (52.2%). Pollen samples are mainly from lake sediment (151 sites), alluvial/fluvial sediment (99 sites), and peat (67 sites), accounting for 85.2% of the total sampling sites. Radiocarbon is the main dating method that accounts for 93.8% of total samples, and most of the sites have 2–10 radiocarbon dating data. Each site has an average number of pollen taxa of 19, with the most sites having 4–30 pollen taxa. The temporal and spatial distribution of representative pollen taxa (Pinus, Quercus, Artemisia and Poaceae) reveals increasing trends both in their distributional range and pollen concentration from the last glacial maximum to Holocene, but such trends have various regional patterns in different parts of China. This fossil pollen dataset is a fruitful work of collection of pollen records in most territory of China that conducted by palynologists from China and overseas during the last half century. It consolidates the valuable and fundamental data that can be potentially utilized to explore the evolution of past environments and their driving mechanism of climate change and human disturbance.

Notes: The nano-CaCO3/Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) composites were prepared bymelting-blend with the single-screw extruder. The mechanical properties of the nanocomposites andthe dispersion of nano-CaCO3 were investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy(TEM) and mechanical tests. The micro structure of the fracture section of the nanocomposites wasanalyzed by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that not only theimpact property but also the rigidity property and the bending modulus of the system have beenincreased evidently by added modificated nano-CaCO3. However, the tensile strength of thenano-composites has a little decreased by added the modificated nano- CaCO3. The modificatednano-CaCO3 has been dispersed well in the matrix in the nanometer scale. The micro structure ofthe fracture section of the nanocomposites proved that when the composites have been impacted, the modificated nano-CaCO3 particles have taken an action of initiating and terminating crazing(silver streak), which can absorb more impact energy than the pure ABS resin. Compared with thepure ABS resin material, the notched impact strength of the nano-CaCO3/ABS composites added 2percent hundred resin (PHR) modificated nano-CaCO3 reach 36.77 kJ/m2, which have beenincreased up to 44%. At the same time, the rigidity of the nanocomposites has also been enhancedby 23.5% which is increased from 28.16N to 34.87 N

Notes: Abstract. This paper presents a sign language recognition system which consists of three modules: model-based hand tracking, feature extraction, and gesture recognition using a 3D Hopfield neural network (HNN). The first one uses the Hausdorff distance measure to track shape-variant hand motion, the second one applies the scale and rotation-invariant Fourier descriptor to characterize hand figures, and the last one performs a graph matching between the input gesture model and the stored models by using a 3D modified HNN to recognize the gesture. Our system tests 15 different hand gestures. The experimental results show that our system can achieve above 91% recognition rate, and the recognition process time is about 10 s. The major contribution in this paper is that we propose a 3D modified HNN for gesture recognition which is more reliable than the conventional methods.

Notes: Abstract We have investigated glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency in 220 unrelated aboriginal male subjects who belong to three different tribes (Saisiat, Ami, and Yami) in Taiwan. Our results show that the G6PD deficiency rates for Saisiat, Ami, and Yami people are 9.0% (6/67), 6.1% (6/99), and 0% (0/54), respectively. Among these deficiency cases, 4 of 6 (66.7%) Saisiat subjects have the 493 A→G mutation and one carries the 1376 G→T mutation, whereas, in Ami subjects, we found that four of six (66.7%) affected males have the 592 C→T mutation and one carries the 493 A→G mutation. These results contrast with our previous findings for Taiwan Chinese, in whom the 1376 G→T mutation is the major mutant allele and accounts for 52.3% of the deficiency cases. This is the first report of G6PD deficiency characterized at the DNA level in Taiwan aboriginal populations.

Notes: In the car body stamping process, trim/blank die cutting edges are subjected to very hightribological loads that result in loss of tool material from both the punch and die cutting edges.According to Archard’s wear model, normal contact force and sliding distance directly affects thewear. Therefore, knowledge of the acting forces on local contact areas has a pivotal role towards theprediction of tool wear. This paper presents a finite element modelling approach to determining thecontact pressure distribution on the tool cutting edges during a trimming/blanking process.Characteristic areas on sheared edge profile, variation of punch force and high contact pressuresaffected areas have also been analysed

Notes: Spherical indentation of superelastic shape memory alloys (SMAs) has been theoreticallyanalyzed. Two characteristic points on the superelastic indentation curve have been discovered. Thebifurcation force corresponding to the bifurcation point relies on the forward transformation stressand the return force corresponding to the return point relies on the reverse transformation stress.Based on these theoretical relationships, an approach to determine the transformation stresses ofsuperelastic SMAs has been proposed. To improve the accuracy of the measurement, a slope methodto locate the two characteristic points from the slope curves is further suggested. Additionally, thespherical indentation hardness was also analyzed

Notes: Using Titanium (Ti) foam as an implant material is a new approach for biomedicalapplications and it is important to understand the mechanical behaviors of this new foam material. In the present study, the bending of the Ti foam has been simulated and compared against recentlypublished data [1]. FE Analysis has been performed by Abaqus software. Stiffness and Yieldstrength of foams between 50% (cortical bone) to 80% (cancellous bone) porosity range wereconsidered. This study showed that crushable foam material model in Abaqus, which hasdeveloped primarily for Aluminum (Al) foam alloys, is also valid for Ti Foam before any crack ordamage occurs in the sample

Notes: For a given sheet metal forming process, an accurate determination of the contactpressure distribution experienced is an essential step towards the estimation of tool life. Thisinvestigation utilizes finite element (FE) analysis to determine the evolution and distribution ofcontact pressure over the die radius, throughout the duration of a channel forming process. It wasfound that a typical two-peak steady-state contact pressure response exists for the majority of theprocess. However, this was preceded by a transient response, which produced extremely large andlocalized contact pressures. Notably, it was found that the peak transient contact pressure was morethan double the steady-state peak. These contact pressure results may have a significant influenceon the tool wear response and therefore impact current wear testing and prediction techniques.Hence, an investigation into the validity of the predicted contact pressure was conducted
