Electrocatalytic Direct Oxidation of Aromatic Compounds by Hydrogen PeroxideContrary to present convictions, the direct oxidation of aromatic compounds by Fenton's reagent (H2O2 + FeII) is preparatively useful if specific reaction conditions are maintained and the products are extracted continuously. The electrocatalytic technique allows to preserve these reaction conditions during the whole course of the reaction. With benzene, chlorobenzene, fluorobenzene, and benzonitrile for the first time yields from 20 to 80% with regard to hydrogen peroxide consumption are obtained for the corresponding phenols. The yields are primarily related to the water solubility of the aromatic compounds and to the rate constant for the addition of the hydroxyl radical.

Die Direktoxidation von Aromaten mit Fentons Reagens (H2O2 + FeII) zu Phenolen ist im Gegensatz zur bisherigen Meinung präparativ wertvoll, wenn spezifische Reaktionsbedingungen eingehalten werden und die Produkte kontinuierlich extraktiv abgetrennt werden. Die elektrokatalytische Arbeitsweise erlaubt es, diese Bedingungen über die gesamte Reaktionsdauer aufrechtzuerhalten. Aus Benzol, Chlorbenzol, Fluorbenzol und Benzonitril werden so die entsprechenden Phenole erstmals in Ausbeuten von 20 bis 80%, bezogen auf den Wasserstoffperoxid-Verbrauch, erhalten. Die Ausbeuten spiegeln dabei in erster Linie die Wasserlöslichkeit des Aromaten und die Additionsgeschwindigkeit des Hydroxyl-Radikals wider.
