    Notes: The article describes the ESCA microscopy beamline dedicated to high spatial resolution quantitative and qualitative analysis on surfaces and interfaces. The scanning microscope is constructed to work both in transmission and photoemission within the photon energy range from 200 to 1200 eV with a spatial resolution of ∼0.1 μm. A Fresnel zone plate demagnifies the photon beam to submicrometer dimensions with 109–1010 photons/s in the focus spot. A photodiode and a hemispherical electron energy analyzer are used as detectors for recording the transmitted x-rays and emitted photoelectrons, respectively. The operation modes in photoemission give the opportunity to obtain conventional energy distribution curve spectra from a microspot or a two-dimensional micrograph of the spatial distribution and local concentration of a selected element as the sample is mechanically scanned. For conductive specimen topography measurements of a selected surface area probed by SPEM are possible using a scanning tunnelling microscope. The first test images of a zone plate and an e-beam written specimen with 1 μm2 Au squares on Si have shown a spatial resolution better than 0.2 μm. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report the design of an ultrahigh vacuum compatible vapor dosing system for organometallic compounds. A unique feature of this doser is the elimination of all metallic surfaces in order to reduce the reactivity of the organometallic molecules towards the doser walls. The vapors only come in contact with glass, Teflon, and Kalrez and the doser is heatable to temperatures of 150 °C. A novel modification to a commercial glass stopcock is described. These modified valves are used in the doser to seal the ultrahigh vacuum system from the organometallic sample compartment and have been shown to be able to allow the vacuum system to maintain ultrahigh vacuum conditions even when the sample compartment is vented to atmosphere. Spring-loaded Teflon seals are used to seal the valve shaft against the glass wall thereby maintaining ultrahigh vacuum conditions and a chemically inert surface for the organometallic compounds. A further modification to these commercial valves is described allowing it to function as the sample compartment for the organometallic material. This compartment features a heatable reservoir, vacuum seals to ultrahigh vacuum levels, and a rapid exchange design to permit the interchange of dosing materials. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A sample mount which can be moved throughout an ultra-high-vacuum environment and through a load-lock to atmosphere is described. A sample mount holder station is also shown whereby the sample temperature can be monitored and controlled from 80 K to the sample melting point. A unique feature is that the temperature is measured with a thermocouple cemented to the sample, but the sample remains transportable. Contacts to electrically isolated side arms on the sample mount provide the correct electrical connections. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: ZnZr doped barium ferrite single domain particles BaFe12−2xZnxZrxO19 with 0≤x≤0.8 were prepared by the chemical coprecipitation method. With increasing doping concentration x, the magnetocrystalline anisotropy and thus the coercivity was drastically decreased. This was mainly due to the substitution of Fe3+ ions in the magnetoplumbite structure and strongly affected by the selective occupation of nonmagnetic cations on sublattice sites. Compared with coercivity, the zero-field saturation magnetization decreased much slower. The particle size decreased with x, while both of the lattice parameters "a" and "c" increased. The high-field differential susceptibility showed an increase with increasing doping concentration x, revealing the breakdown of the magnetic collinear structure and subsequently increased fraction of surface canted spins. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We designed an ultrahigh vacuum high-pressure (UHVHP) reaction system for in situ sum frequency generation studies. This system allows for pressure (10−9 Torr–1 atm), and temperature (150–1100 K) dependent investigation of adsorbates on single crystals or polycrystalline foils and of catalytic reactions. By combining two optical parametric systems, we are able to simultaneously detect CO and ethylene on Pt(111) surface. A gas chromatograph is used to monitor the kinetics of ethylene hydrogenation on Pt(111). © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract A study has been undertaken of the oxidation behavior of Fe-26 wt.% Cr-1 wt.% Al and Fe-26 wt.% Cr-1 wt.% Si at 800° and 1000°C in oxygen, in order to determine the usefulness of the two tertiary elements in facilitating the development of the Cr2O3 external scale. The research has also permitted a comparison of the modes of internal oxidation of these elements, with a view to ascertaining the ease of establishment of the tertiary element oxides as healing layers at the scale/alloy interface. It has been shown that aluminum is the more effective addition in this respect, due to formation of a higher population density of internal oxide nuclei in the early stages. However, in the 1% Al alloy, the precipitates penetrate inward, to considerable depths, as continuous platelets, making development of a complete healing layer difficult. In practice, a higher aluminum concentration is necessary for the closely spaced precipitates to coalesce to form the healing layer, but the process then occurs rapidly. The initial internal oxide nuclei in the 1% Si alloy have a much smaller population density and are restricted to a location very close to the surface. Thus, a healing layer can be established, but the large interparticle spacing makes this a very slow process. Even at a higher silicon concentration, it takes a significant period to be completed. The effects are discussed and accounted for, particularly in terms of the relative stabilities of the various oxides.

    Notes: Abstract. We prove the existence of a complete, embedded, singly periodic minimal surface, whose quotient by vertical translations has genus one and two ends. The existence of this surface was announced in our paper in Bulletin of the AMS, 29(1):77-84, 1993. Its ends in the quotient are asymptotic to one full turn of the helicoid, and, like the helicoid, it contains a vertical line. Modulo vertical translations, it has two parallel horizontal lines crossing the vertical axis. The nontrivial symmetries of the surface, modulo vertical translations, consist of: $ 180^\circ $ -rotation about the vertical line; $ 180^\circ $ rotation about the horizontal lines (the same symmetry); and their composition.
