Notes: This paper reports the heat-resistance of plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) coatingsformed on AZ91D alloy in phosphate electrolytes (P-film) and silicate electrolytes (Si-film). Theresults showed that the P-film was mainly composed of MgAl2O4, MgO and the Si-film wascomposed of Mg2SiO4, MgO. Thermoanalysis results verified that all these phases contained in thetwo type coatings had excellent thermal stability below 800oC. Meanwhile, the total area of heaterosion formed on the surface of samples tended to be increased with the exposure time prolonged inhigh temperature (410 oC and air atmosphere)

Notes: The advancement of leaf senescence is accompanied by a reduction in cellular protein content together with the induction of specific proteins which are probably involved in the process. In the present study, with parsley, we followed the changes in the levels of proteins functionally and immunogenically related to pathogenesis-related proteins during both senescence of detached leaves and natural senescence of attached leaves. Both chitinase activity and protein level were found to be induced during senescence, as was the level of two other proteins immunologically related to β-1,3-glucanase and P4 pathogenesis-related proteins of citrus and tomato, respectively. A high correlation between the advancement of senescence and the induction of these proteins was demonstrated. Treatments with CO2 or gibberellic acid, which retard senescence, reduced both chitinase activity and the level of the pathogenesis-related proteins, whereas enhancement of senescence with ethylene induced them further. The induction of pathogenesis-related proteins during senescence suggests that these proteins may have a primary role in this process.

Notes: Ethylene enhances senescence of carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.) flowers. Sephacryl S-200 gel filtration followed by SDS-PAGE of extracts of petals exposed to ethyiene revealed the increase or appearance of proteins with molecular masses of 70, 60, 35 and 33 kDa, and a concomitant decrease in proteins with molecular masses of 62. 45. 34. 30 and 26 kDa. The 70-kDa protein, which was not detected in untreated flowers, was isolated and polyclonal antibodies were prepared against it. Its N-terminal sequence (20 amino acids) was identical to that of a portion of the deduced protein encoded by cDNA clone pSR 12. recently isolated by others from carnation petals. Western blot analyses of petal extracts after various exposure times to ethylene alone or in the presence of translation or transcription inhibitors suggested that accumulation of the 70-kDa protein is due primarily to ethylene-induced synthesis. The apparent induction by ethyiene was further supported by data indicating that the protein is not formed in flowers pre-treated with silver thiosulfale. an inhibitor of ethylene action, prior to exposure to ethylene. Ethylene induction of the protein was found only in petal tissue, and the protein was not detected in other carnation plant organs. Immunological studies revealed that the protein is specifically expressed in carnation petals and not in petals of several other flowers. Southern and northern analyses using an SRI2 cDNA probe indicated that the genomic DNA of petunia, carnation, and gerbera contain fragments homologous to SRI2. Gene expression products were however, only detected in petals of ethylenetreated carnation flowers.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we propose a gradient surface method (GSM) for the optimization of discrete event dynamic systems. GSM combines the advantages of response surface methodology (RSM) and efficient derivative estimation techniques like perturbation analysis (PA) or likelihood ratio method (LR). In GSM, the gradient estimation is obtained by PA (or LR), and the performance gradient surface is obtained from observations at various points in a fashion similar to the RSM. Zero points of the successive approximating gradient surface are then taken as the estimates of the optimal solution. GSM is characterized by several attractive features: it is a single-run method and more efficient than RSM; it uses at each iteration step the information from all data points rather than just the local gradient; it tries to capture the global features of the gradient surface and thereby quickly arrives at the vicinity of the optimal solution. A number of examples are exhibited to illustrate this method.

Notes: Multi-layer structures are common in electronic package especially for the micro devices manufactured via the semi-conductor processes or MEMS processes. Interfacial crack due to the delamination significantly weakens the multi-layer structure. It is desired to understand the interfacial fracture properties of the electronic packaging materials. In this research, three specimens named Doubled Cantilever Beam (DCB), End-Notched Flexure (ENF), and Four-Point-Bending are proposed to investigate the fracture toughness associated with mode I, mode II and mixed mode. Basing on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, the strain energy in a bi-layer beam is derived. The strain energy before and after the propagation of the interfacial crack are calculated, lead to the determination of the strain energy release rate. The analytical results of strain energy release rate derived in this investigation are compared with the numerical results obtained from finite element method. The effects of material properties and thickness between the adjacentlayers of interfacial crack are examined through the parametric study

Notes: Abstract In this paper, we present a unified diagnostic method for linear measurement error models based upon the corrected likelihood of Nakamura (1990, Biometrika, 77, 127–137). Both global influence and local influence are discussed. The case-deletion model and mean-shift outlier model are considered, and they are shown to be approximately equivalent. Several diagnostic measures are derived and discussed. It is found that they can be written in terms of the residual and leverage measure. Some existing results are improved. Numerical example illustrates that our method is useful for diagnosing influential observations.

Notes: Abstract A diagnostic model and several new diagnostic statistics are proposed for testing for varying dispersion in exponential family nonlinear models. A score statistic and an adjusted score statistic based on Cox and Reid (1987, J. Roy. Statist. Soc. Ser. B, 55, 467-471) are derived in normal, inverse Gaussian, and gamma nonlinear models. An adjusted likelihood ratio statistic is also given for normal and inverse Gaussian nonlinear models. The results of simulation studies are presented, which show that the adjusted tests keep their sizes better and are more powerful than the ordinary tests.
