    Notes: Abstract The species and distribution of nematodes on the kelp Macrocystic integrifolia Bory, in the Bamfield region of Barkley Sound, British Columbia, Canada were examined. Nine species (belonging to six families) of nematodes were found on the kelp blades. Three species (Monhystera disjuncta, M. refringens and Prochromadorella neapolitana) comprised 91–99% of the nematode fauna and occurred in all monthly samples from July 1978 to November 1979. The three dominant species exhibited seasonal density differences. P. neapolitana occurred mostly in the summer, M. refringens abundance peaked from July to October and M. disjuncta was relatively abundant throughout the year. The other species contributed little to the overall abundance and distribution patterns. All three species occurred in greatest abundance on the lower and middle blades of M. integrifolia in the deep end of the kelp bed. Very few individuals occurred on the upper blades. Nematode distribution on M. integrifolia appeared to be related to blade age and the associated food sources on the blade.

    Notes: A study was made of the effect of a single generation of the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita on the growth of potted French bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris) inoculated at different stages of plant maturity. In separate experiments. 3-, 11- and 13-day-old plants were inoculated before primary leaf expansion (BPLE). at the appearance of trifoliate leaves (TRIF) and at the flower bud (BDS) stages respectively, with 0, 2000, 4000 or 8000 second-stage juvenile nematodes and maintained in a growth chamber under controlled conditions. The photosynthetic rate of the plants inoculated at the TRIF and BDS stages decreased significantly with increasing inoculum level 7 days after inoculation. Although the respiration rate did not significantly change throughout the experimental period, the ratio of photosynthetic to respiration rate decreased significantly with increasing nematode inoculum level and duration of infection. Chlorophyll content, plant dry weight and the numbers of buds, flowers, pods and seeds were significantly lower in infected plants than in the controls; this effect increased with increasing levels of nematode inoculum for all three plant stages. The leaf area was significantly smaller only when nematode infection occurred at the BPLE stage. The plants which were youngest at the time of nematode infection produced the lowest yield; this appeared to result from the effect of nematodes on photosynthesis and related physiological processes.

    Notes: After spraying an aqueous solution of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, 2,4-D (140 mg/100 ml/sq. yd) onto nematode susceptible (cv. Sun II) and resistant (cv. Manod) oats infested with Ditylenchus dipsaci the final number of nematodes per plant after eight weeks in both resistant and susceptible cultivars was greater in the sprayed than in the unsprayed plants. Seedlings (18 days old) sprayed two weeks after nematode inoculation tended to contain the largest number of nematodes. Spraying of Shell D50, a commercial 2,4-D herbicide (10 ml of concentrate /250ml/4 sq. yd) on nematode-infested oats resulted in a larger number of nematodes per plant than in the unsprayed plants but the difference was insignificant. The 2,4-D spray, which decreased the resistance of oats, but not of barley, to nematodes, caused plant cell hypertrophy and proliferation, which is a necessary response for favourable nematode development.

    Notes: Abstract  Kikai-jima in the central Ryukyu Islands of Japan is fringed by exposed terraces of Holocene reefs, which formed as a result of periodic local tectonic uplift associated with subduction/collision. The terraces form four topographically distinct features (TI-IV) around the island and represent reefs that grew to sea level at 9000–6065 y BP, 6065–3390 y BP, 3790–2630 y BP, and 2870 to 1550 y BP. The modern reef terrace has been growing since approximately 1550 y BP. The reef terraces were uplifted sequentially around 6050 y BP (4 m), 3390–3790 y BP (2.5 m), 2630–2870 y BP (1 m) and 1550 y BP (2.5 m). Five sites were studied to define reef development in response to periodic relative sea level fall and different stillstand recovery periods. Thirty coral genera and 70 species were recorded from four distinct shallow reef flat to upper reef slope and one deeper reef slope coral assemblage. Significant lateral variations in total coral abundance, genera number, diversity, and the coverage density of Acropora spp. and Faviids occur both within and between the terraces. Stratigraphically, drill core and outcrop data recorded shallowing upward sequences characterised by tabulate Acropora spp. overlying massive Porites sp. and Faviids. The biological variations may represent growth strategies responding to initial colonisation, episodic perturbation (relative sea level fall) and differing recovery times during stillstands, and indicate a reef ecosystem stable and strong enough to recover after substantial perturbations. However, this study suggests that relatively small geological changes have had substantial biological effects, and modelling indicates that such changes would have been more profound had a third factor, such as substrate angle, varied more dramatically. In such a case, the drowning growth strategy exhibited in the drill core transect may have been more prevalent, and reefs would be struggling to grow around Kikai-jima today.

    Notes: Abstract The strain distribution produced by heating in a plate cut from a welded austenitic-ferritic steel transition joint has been measured using high resolution moiré photography Two methods of doing this are discussed one using a random pattern on the specimen surface and the other using a regular, orthogonal grating stencilled on to the surface. The strains parallel and perpendicular to the interface are presented and show strain peaks near the interface. The effect on strain of introducing a simulated crack along the interface was also examinec. The measurements are compared with the strains computed from a finite-element analysis.
