Notes: Abstract Azo-benzene chromophores with an oxygen donor and five different end-groups have been attached to octadecyl chains or to polysiloxane backbones via hexadecyl spacer groups. These were deposited by the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique using our own design of diamond-barrier trough. The LB deposition properties of the polymers were superior to those of the low molecular mass materials, which did not show second harmonic generation (SHG) as deposited monolayers. The strength of SHG from the polymers correlated with acceptor strength, but the maximum signal was only about 10% of that of hemicyanine. Only one of the polymers gave thick films of very high quality; this had a hydroxyl end-group and showed no SHG except when deposited from an acid subphase. This was presumed to result from protonation of the azo group to create an acceptor. The quality of the deposited films may correlate with their phase behaviour; the best material showed only a presumed soft crystalline phase. The film-forming properties of that film were remarkable; loss figures of around 2.5 dB cm−1 have been recorded at 633 nm in films of 1.3 Μm thickness. Future work will seek to isolate and independently control the factors involved in good film formation and in high SHG.

Notes: Abstract Application of simultaneous ultrasound to representative solution-phase reversible voltammetric couples produce a step-shaped voltammogram at platinum electrodes of both ‘macro’ and ‘micro’ dimensions. The limiting current increases with ultrasonic power, but is not markedly affected by ultrasonic frequency in the 20–800kHz region. In contrast the complex voltammetry of a platinized platinum electrode surface within the hydrogen adsorption regime in aqueous acid medium is very little affected by sonication. Factors affecting the reproducibility of sonoelectrochemical experiments when employing ultrasonic sources are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Bi-linear systems of the formAV+WA=G are obtained by approximating Poisson-type equations using higher-order finite difference formulae whereV,W andG are known matrices. Solution of the bi-linear system requiresO(n 3) operations for ann×n mesh. However, due to the increased accuracy obtained when using a high-order discretization formula,n can be made much smaller than in the conventional methods and indicates that faster Poisson-solvers which are numerically stable can be obtained by considering the bilinear system rather than the composite matrix form.

Notes: Abstract The voltammetry of various well-defined systems in acetonitrile solution has been studied using both micro and macroelectrodes in the presence of power ultrasound. A simple model is established which quantifies the mass transport observed under these conditions; this assumes that the effect of ultrasound is to promote mixing within the bulk of the solution up to within a certain distance of the electrode surface. Thus the ultrasound serves to thin the diffusion layer which would exist at the corresponding electrode under silent conditions. The relative enhancement of transport limited currents by ultrasound is dependent on the size of the electrode; for micrometre-sized electrodes the steady state limiting current observed tends to that predicted under silent conditions whereas for large electrodes a thin, steady-state diffusion layer is seen with a thickness which is power dependent. In addition to steady-state experiments, a.c. impedance measurements and potentials steps are used to verify the model proposed.

Notes: In the electro-oxidative preparation of polypyrrole films from electrolyte media containing both perchlorate and hexafluorophosphate anions a striking selectivity towards ClO4 was observed, with a three-fold preference for this anion in films from aqueous medium and a greater than ten-fold preference from MeCN. This result is of benefit towards the production of polypyrroles containing complex functionalized dopant anions, since the presence of PF6 to bolster electrolysis parameters will less readily carry over into the final polymer. PF6 is particularly useful for this purpose in MeCN, where ClO4 is inappropriate, being itself too readily incorporated into the polymer from this solvent system.

Notes: Thin films of a selection of stilbene and biphenyl side-chain substituted liquid crystal polymers based on polysiloxanes were deposited using an automated dip-coating technique and exposed to either 100 ppm NO2 gas and/or concentrated nitric acid vapour, the consequent effect being monitored by changes in the UV-visible spectra of the material. No effective response to NO2 was observed from the biphenylene analogue, but the stilbene derivatives showed spectral changes to suggest that an interaction occurs between the vapour and the bridge position of the stilbene side-chain. The stilbenes also show a marked pre-conditioning phenomenon upon exposure to nitric acid vapour prior to exposure to nitrogen dioxide. This procedure gives a material that has a more reversible response on exposure to NO2 gas than an anagolous film that has not been pre-treated. Copyright © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notes: Siloxane copolymers having as side-chains azobenzene derivatives bearing different electron-withdrawing and donating substituents were deposited as thin films by dip coating, and their behaviour upon exposure to 100 pm NO2 was studied by UV/visible spectroscopy. Electron-donating substituents at the ortho positions on the aromatic rings in the azo unit have significant influence on the absorbance changes produced by exposure to NO2, and this is explained by modelling, which suggests that interaction between the electrophilic nitrogen atom in NO2 and the electron clouds of the azobenzene skeleton is responsible for the sensing process, rather than the formation of a Wheland intermediate or other product of chemical reaction. Especially effective substituents are methoxy groups in either aromatic ring ortho or the azo linkage, which also produce a significant increase in intensity of the long-wavelength n-π* transition. This moves the optical interrogation signal to a wavelength range of particular benefit for potential applications. Copyright © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
