    Notes: Abstract Ingested matter can have a significant effect on whole body metal concentration measurements in Mytilus edulis. Depuration of mussels in clean seawater for 36 h prior to dissection eliminates most of these contaminating gut contents. Depuration followed by metal analyses is the most direct method of determining mussel tissue metal bioburdens. After being transplanted into a plume of primary treated sewage effluent in Salem Harbor, Massachusetts for 32 days, Al, Cr, and Fe concentrations in depurated mussels were significantly lower than those determined for either non-depurated mussels or for depurated mussels to which fecal concentrations of Al, Cr, and Fe were added back in. Although mathematical methods developed by both Ouellette (1978) and Boehm et al. (1988) could be applied to non-depurated mussels in order to correct for errors associated with gut metal contamination, these indirect methods were not as reliable as depuration prior to analysis.

    Notes: Summary Two morphologically different cysts were found in skeletal muscles of mice inoculated with fecal material from a stray cat containing Isospora-type oocysts. The most common cyst contained bradyzoites resembling those of Toxoplasma and resulted from an oocyst measuring 11×13 μm which appeared to be identical to that of Toxoplasma. The other cyst, observed in only a few mice, contained bradyzoites resembling those of Sarcocystis, but the oocyst or sporocyst that gave rise to it was overlooked and apparently lost. Two more strains of the parasite resembling Toxoplasma were found in feces of stray cats. When inoculated into mice, the oocyst of this parasite routinely produced chronic infection and formed cysts similar to Toxoplasma in skeletal muscles and occasionally in the central nervous system. The majority of infected mice developed Toxoplasma antibody, but only to low titers. Cats fed carcasses of infected mice remained healthy and shed nonsporulated oocysts following a prepatent period of about 5 days. Cats did not develop Toxoplasma antibody. There was little or no cross immunity between the parasite and T. gondii in cats or mice. Transmission of the parasite between mice by the cyst stage normally was not possible; however, mice inoculated with cortisone acetate did become infected when inoculated with cysts. In other laboratory animals inoculated orally with the oocyst asymptomatic infection was detected in 3 species of rats, in guinea pigs and in dogs, but not in monkeys, pigeons or Japanese quails. Fluorescent antibody tests on human sera failed to provide evidence of natural human infection with the parasite.

    Notes: The use of a chemically modified electrode for amperometric detection in flowing solutions is described. The modifier is a ruthenium-containing polymer ([Ru(bpy)2(PVP)5Cl]Cl) that exhibits electro-catalytic properties. The polymer-coated electrodes are less prone to fouling (product adsorption) problems and show enhanced sensitivity for various dithiocarbamate metal complexes and nitrite ions. Limitations of the chemisorbed polymer coatings are discussed.

    Notes: An individually addressable microelectrode array system has been developed in the course of this work. The performance of this system was investigated using conventional electrochemistry (oxidation/reduction or ferrocene carboxylic acid) to demonstrate that independent potential control and current measurement at each of the array components was possible. The practical utility of this system has been demonstrated using a conducting polymer based microarray detection system subsequent to Ion Chromatography. The detection of simple electroinactive ions (e.g., Cl-, SO42-, K+, NH4+) using the array system was achieved and the response at each of the array components was studied as a function of polymer composition.

    Notes: A common method for the synthesis of conducting polypyrrole involves the use of potentiostatic or galvanostatic deposition. The electrical and mechanical properties of the polymer resulting from these synthesis techniques are known to be highly dependent on a number of factors. These factors include the reactant and electrolyte concentrations and other conditions, such as pH. During batch synthesis these parameters have been observed to vary, so that the electrodeposited polypyrrole film is affected by continually changing chemical environments. As a result, polymeric material with different properties is deposited on top of the polymer formed earlier during synthesis. This problem is further exacerbated when polypyrrole is synthesized on a continuous basis using a rotating anode electrode. In order to avoid these effects a process control system has been developed to monitor and control these critical parameters for both batch and continuous electrochemical synthesis of polypyrrole in water. The system is based on monitoring dopant concentration, monomer concentration and pH using flow-through UV-visible spectroscopy, electrochemical detection by pulsed potential rotating disk electrode and a pH meter respectively. Control was achieved by using a closed loop PID (proportional, integral, derivative) controller for pH and a closed loop on/off controller for monomer concentration. The control of dopant concentration was found to be unnecessary when pH control was employed as the addition of p-toluenesulfonic acid to control pH compensated for dopant depletion.
