Notes: Abstract Precise measurements of groundwater temperature, with a resolution of 0.0001°C, have been made for the purpose of earthquake prediction at four water wells in the Tokai district in Japan. The characteristics of temporal variations in groundwater temperature differ from well to well. From records of a well located in an area where use of groundwater is heavy, movement of groundwater was sensed by temperature variations. By contrast, water temperatures in a 500 m well far from cultural areas were extremely steady, with fluctuations of less than 0.0005°C. This well appears to be suitable for monitoring possible temperature changes related to the occurrence of an impending large earthquake.

Notes: Abstract Detection of precursory phenomena in observation data is essential to earthquake prediction studies. Continuous monitoring of radon concentration in groundwater in Japan in one case showed a short-term anomaly related to a nearby earthquake. With the exception of the 1978 Izu-Oshimakinkai earthquake (M7.0), however, no abnormal change has been noted. This may be due partially to difficulty in detecting insignificant precursory signals from observation data, which ordinarily contains a noise-induced fluctuations, and partially to lack of understanding of the mechanism controlling the appearance of precursory phenomena. In order to increase our knowledge of the variation pattern of precursory changes in radon concentration of groundwater, hydrologic precursors with significant features are examined in this paper. Complexity of appearance of precursory phenomena and problems in assignment of the specific earthquake are discussed.

Notes: [Auszug] We have determined the abundances (Table 1) of twenty-eight chemical elements, including eight elements previously reported. Abundances of Al, Ca, V, Mn, Na, Sc, Cr, Fc and Co were analysed in two grams of an interior sample by instrumental neutron activation analysis2. In another interior specimen ...

Notes: [Auszug] Based on their physical and chemical signatures, marine ferromanganese nodules are generally considered to be generated in two major environments1"3: diagenetic and hydrogenetic. The diagenetic type is characterized by a high Mn-to-Fe ratio (Mn/Fe^2.5), enrichment of trace elements such as Co, Ni ...

Notes: [Auszug] The characteristic greenish colour of the altered volcanic rocksin the Green Tuff is considered to be a result of diagenetic and hydrothermal alterations. Volcanic and sedimentary piles up to several thousand metres thick distributed in the region are attributed to subsidence and subsequent ...

Notes: [Auszug] In spite of the ease with which helium escapes from the upper part of the atmosphere to interplanetary space because of its low atomic mass, the terrestrial atmosphere contains an appreciable amount of helium with a concentration of 5.24x 10~6 byvolume. This has been attributed to a supply from the ...

Description: We have measured the 3He/4He and 20Ne/4He ratios of gases dissolved in the pore water in sediments at two sites in the Nankai Trough (Site 583) and the Japan Trench (Site 584). The 3He/4He and 20Ne/4He ratios vary from 0.215 * 10**-6 to 1.23 * 10**-6 and from 50 * 10**-3 to 2700 * 10**-3, respectively. These values can be explained by mixing two components, one from the atmosphere and one with a 3He/4He ratio of (0.2 to 0.3) * 10**-6. The latter component may be derived from the ocean crust near the subduction zone.

Description: Studies on He isotope ratios of gas and rock samples in various parts of the world have shown a close relation between the 3He/4He ratio and geotectonic features of the sampling area. Emission of primordial He is commonly found in gases and fluid in Cenozoic volcanic areas (mid-ocean ridges, hot spots, and subduction zones), whereas that of radiogenic He is predominant in continental areas. Thus, the 3He/4He ratio is considered a useful tool for evaluating a variety of geotectonic environments.
