Notes: The long time self-diffusion of highly charged colloidal particles consisting of polybutylacrylate was studied employing pulsed field gradient NMR (PFGNMR) and Brownian dynamics (BD) simulations. The potential parameters for the Yukawa interaction potential used in the BD simulations were derived from the static structure factor measured by means of light scattering. The long time self-diffusion coefficients resulting from NMR and BD were compared for different ionic strengths, which cause a screening of the interaction potential due to stray ions. Increasing the ionic strength of the colloidal suspensions, we observed a phase transition from a crystalline to a liquidlike structure. Whereas at high salt concentrations both long time diffusion coefficients agree within a few percent, at intermediate ionic strengths the values measured via PFGNMR are by a factor of 2 higher than those predicted by the BD simulation. This deviation is explained by hydrodynamic interactions which are expected to enhance long time self-diffusion and which are not taken into account in our BD algorithm. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The band-gap narrowing in heavily doped silicon has been studied by optical techniques—namely, photoluminescence and photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy—and by electrical measurements on bipolar transistors. The optical experiments give a consistent set of data for the band-gap narrowing in n- and p-type material at low temperatures as well as at room temperature. A good agreement is found between the optical and electrical data removing the discrepancies existing so far in the literature.

Notes: Allowed and forbidden first-order as well as resonant second-order Raman scattering has been used to study implantation damage in low-dose (5×1011–1×1013 cm−2) 29Si+-implanted GaAs. Symmetry forbidden scattering by longitudinal optical (LO) phonons and allowed 2LO scattering were found to be most sensitive to lattice damage for the range of implantation doses given above. The intensity ratio of the 2LO peak to the forbidden LO phonon line measures variations in the implantation dose with an accuracy better than ±7% for an average dose of 2×1012 cm−2. The potential of spatially resolved Raman spectroscopy for the assessment of homogeneity in as-implanted GaAs wafers has been demonstrated.

Notes: Suspensions of nanoscale titanium nitride (TiN) with a high solids content can be prepared by using guanidino propionic acid (GPA) as a stabilizing agent. The steric effect of an organic shell with polar groups on the surface of TiN spheres has been suggested in the literature as being a reason for the colloidal stability. To verify this hypothesis experimentally, we have performed small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) on this system; there is no evidence of an organic shell. Even at higher concentrations, in accordance with the Percus-Yevick theory, we could not observe any significant interparticular ordering. A plausible explanation for the stabilization of TiN suspensions is the buffer action of the amino acid GPA.

Notes: : This paper provides a thoretical and empirical evaluation of unions’effects on innovative activity, focussing on institutional details and country-specific factors. We represent results of an econometric investigation for Germany using data at the industry and establishment level. In contrast to US studies, no statistically significant negative influence of unions on innovative activity shows up from industry-level data. Establishment-level data, however, indicate that the presence of a works council is positive for R & D if union density is not “too high”. This is in line with the more cooperative nature of industrial relations in Germany.

Notes: Abstract Using panel data for all manufacturing firms in the German Federal State of Lower Saxony in this paper the age distribution of jobs existing in 1992 is analyzed. Four conclusions emerge: The porportion of long-lasting jobs amounts to about 75 percent in firms that were founded prior to 1978. Old jobs are relatively more frequently found in establishments that belong to a multi-establishment enterprise. Neither the sector nor the technological intensity do matter for the proportion of old jobs. Firm size is not related to the proportion of long lasting jobs.
