    Description: What is an image? How can we describe the experience of looking at images, and how do they become meaningful to us? In what sense are images like or unlike propositions? Participants of the 33rd International Wittgenstein Symposium--philosophers as well as historians of art, science, and literature--provide many stimulating answers. Some of the contributions are dedicated to Wittgenstein’s thoughts on images while others testify to the important role notions coined or inspired by Wittgenstein--“seeing as”, “picture games” and the dichotomy of “saying and showing”--play in the field of picture theory today. This first volume of the Proceedings of the 2010 conference addresses readers interested in the history and theory of images, and in the philosophy of Wittgenstein.

    Description: Diagrams are an essential part of the most diverse processes of communication and cognition. Indeed, today the production of all kinds of text (including this one) is mediated by diagrammatic tools to be found on computer desktops. Not surprisingly, then, diagrams have become the object of much historical and theoretical work. This book--volume 2 of the Proceedings of the 33rd International Wittgenstein Symposium--is dedicated to this quickly growing field of interdisciplinary research. It includes contributions from philosophy, sociology (space syntax), art history, and history of science. Historically, there is a focus on Otto Neurath and his famous visual language (ISOTYPE), while the new attempts at theorizing diagrams presented here are mainly inspired by Charles Sanders Peirce and Ludwig Wittgenstein.

    Notes: Abstract We consider the problem of recognizing those partial orders which admit a valuation: this is a linear-algebraic condition which arises naturally in an algebraic/geometric context. We show that a partial order has at most one valuation (which is integer-valued) and present various structural conditions which are either necessary or sufficient for a partial order to be valuable. The first main result is a reduction theorem which allows us to restrict attention to those partial orders which do not have a bounded cutset. We use this and a theorem of Kelly and Rival to prove the second main result: that every contraction of a bounded partial order is fibre-valuable if and only if the partial order is a dismantlable lattice. This result has a geometric interpretation.

    Notes: Abstract DNA analyses have been used only occasionally to investigate genetic polymorphisms in forest tree populations. Nonetheless, these analyses have already contributed to significant discoveries, such as paternal chloroplast and maternal mitochondrial DNA inheritance in Pinaceae. DNA polymorphisms will be increasingly exploited in the future by forest population geneticists, because available technology permits large sample sizes and yields excellent resolution. The utility of chloroplast, mitochondrial, and nuclear DNA polymorphisms is expected to be greatest when less expensive genetic markers are unavailable, insufficiently numerous, or ineffectively polymorphic. For example, DNA fingerprinting may permit the unambiguous elucidation of genetic relationships within and among populations of woody species.

    Notes: Abstract Order series of labelled posets are multi-analogues of the more familiar order polynomials; the corresponding multi-analogues of the related “representation polynomials” are calledE-series. These series can be used to describe the effect of composition of labelled posets on their order polynomials, whence their interest for us. We give a reciprocity theorem forE-series, and show that for an unlabelled poset the form of theE-series depends only upon the comparability graph of the poset. We also prove that theE-series of any labelled poset is a rational power series (in many indeterminates) and give an algorithm for computing it which runs in polynomial time when the poset is strictly labelled and of bounded width. Finally, we give an explicit product formula for theE-series of strictly labelled interval posets.

    Notes: Summary A new linker that employs a photosensitive 3-ammo-3-(2-nitrophenyl)propionyl functionality (ANP-resin) has been developed for the preparation of C-terminal carboxamides. A wide range of carboxamides were prepared and identified using the ANP-resin and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. A single bead containing tripeptide Fmoc-Asp-Arg(Tos)-Val-NH2 was isolated, photocleaved and the peptide was characterized by tandem mass spectrometry, thereby verifying a library decode strategy that avoids complex tagging procedures.

    Notes: Abstract When mass spectrometry (MS) is used to study protein primary structure, it is used in a “static” mode. That is, the information is derived from a single MS or MS-MS spectrum. Information about more complex protein structure or protein interactions can also be gained via MS. If a series of mass spectra is collected as something else in the experiment is changing, we increase the “dimensionality” of the MS data. For example, measuring mass spectra as a function of time after exposure of a protein to deuterated solvents can provide information about protein structure. Likewise, by measuring mass spectra of a protein as the concentration of a binding ligand is changed, one can infer the stoichiometry of the complex. Another important, but fundamentally different way of increasing the dimensionality of mass spectral data is by coupling the mass spectrometer to a one- or two-dimensional separation technique.
