The metabolism of 2,4-dioxo-3,3-diethyl-5-methyl-piperidine (I) was studied and its oxidation to 4,6-dioxo-5,5-diethyl-tetrahydronicotinic acid (V) demonstrated. In addition, as intermediary products in the transformation of the methyl group into the carboxyl group, 2,4-dioxo-3,3-diethyl-5-methyl-tetrahydro-pyridine (II) and 2,4-dioxo-3,3-diethyl-5-hydroxymethyl-tetrahydro-pyridine (III) were isolated from the urine of experimental animals. These products when fed to dogs were partially excreted unchanged, and partially transformed into V. Glucuronides of III and V were also found in the urine and especially in the bile.
