Notes: Abstract A family with myoclonus epilepsy has been described previously as suffering from an X-linked disorder, because at least four males were affected, and only mild and variable symptoms were seen in some female carriers. In this family, we have now identified a mitochondrial A→G (8344) heteroplasmic point mutation. This point mutation has been described in families with maternally inherited myoclonus epilepsy and ragged red fibers. The degree of severity of the disorder in the different family members was reflected in the relative quantity of mutated mitochondrial DNA. It is concluded that the mode of inheritance in this family is not X-linked but maternal.

Notes: [Auszug] Rayleighs approximate formula leads to 000033 cal. cm.-1 sec.-1 deg. C.-1 for the thermal conductivity in the numerical example discussed by Webb. From other considerations45 it follows that this value is approximately 30 per cent too low. The value for a mineral dry soil at the same porosity (476 ...

Notes: The intrinsic and extrinsic capacitances of in-plane-gated (IPG) transistors are calculated by conformal mapping. The capacitance per unit length between coplanar areas is only weakly dependent on the separation. It is essentially determined by the dielectric constant only and has a value of ∼18 pF/m in air. In both ion-implanted and trench-etched IPG transistors the geometry is of minor importance for the low- and high-frequency behavior. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In migration procedures, the velocity profile of the subsurface is the most important input information. Since, in general, this information is only approximately known, errors in the migration output due to errors in the velocity input occur in all practical applications. In migration, velocity errors and depth errors can be interchanged. This interchange property is perfect in the paraxial approximation. From this result it follows that migration with incorrect velocities may still yield correctly migrated data if the imaging principle is modified. This attractive property can be used in the stripping version of migration (recursive migration).

Notes: We observe electrically asymmetrical source-drain characteristics in in-plane-gated transistors with shaped channels, and investigate them for different geometries. We give a qualitative explanation of the asymmetry, which is supported by voltage contrast scanning electron micrographs and the measured interaction between two neighboring channels. These shaped channels show a much higher dc voltage gain than conventional in-plane-gated transistors. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: One-dimensional in-plane-gate (IPG) transistors in the Si/Ge system are fabricated and characterized by focused ion implantation of Ga+ ions on lines into high-mobility two-dimensional electron gases confined in Si/SiGe heterostructures. Transistor operation is demonstrated up to temperatures of T=77 K. The depletion length of the FIB written lines and the saturation drift velocity of the electrons in the Si layer under tensile strain can be estimated from series of samples with different geometric widths of the channel. The IPG transistors presented here are the first based on Si, pushing this elegant transistor concept towards the important Si technology. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We show that there can be lateral structure inside the fluid core caused by gravitational forcing from the mantle, from the inner core, or from topography on the core–mantle or inner core–outer core boundaries. We describe a method for calculating the internal structure, given knowledge of the forcing. We discuss the possible effects of this structure on results for the core–mantle boundary topography inferred from observations of the Earth's forced nutations and diurnal earth tides. We consider the possible implications of a thin, low-density fluid layer at the top of the core.

Notes: [Auszug] At our laboratory Vignes and Dijkema3 studied the flow of water towards an ice front through a very narrow slit (50nm1 mm50mm), all walls consisting of quartz. They found that under isothermal conditions the flow occurred at a rate proportional to the degree of subcooling. This result was confirmed ...

Notes: Summary This paper is a first report on a programme aimed at recording continuously heat and vapour fluxes close to the earth's surface. Measurements of the terms in the energy balance of grassland, with the exception of the evaporative flux, were performed. The experimental site is described; it is considered to be representative for large grassland areas in Western Europe. The paper concentrates on turbulent transport measurements. Fluxes of heat and momentum are measured by the eddy-correlation method at a height of 1 m. Wind velocity components were determined with three hot-wire anemometers, the temperature with a rapid resistance thermometer. The experimental and data processing systems are described. Co-spectra for momentum and heat fluxes were obtained and compared with those found by other investigators. In some cases marked differences were observed. The evaporation rate was derived from the energy balance equation and compared with a calculated potential evaporation rate. The two correspond fairly well, except under dry soil conditions, when actual evaporation rates were lower than potential ones. The Bowen ratio showed wide variations from hour to hour and day to day.
