    Description: Air‐sea interactions are critical to large-scale weather and climate predictions because of the ocean's ability to absorb excess atmospheric heat and carbon and regulate exchanges of momentum, water vapor, and other greenhouse gases. These exchanges are controlled by molecular, turbulent, and wave-driven processes in the atmospheric and oceanic boundary layers. Improved understanding and representation of these processes in models are key for increasing Earth system prediction skill, particularly for subseasonal to decadal time scales. Our understanding and ability to model these processes within this coupled system is presently inadequate due in large part to a lack of data: contemporaneous long-term observations from the top of the marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL) to the base of the oceanic mixing layer. We propose the concept of “Super Sites” to provide multi-year suites of measurements at specific locations to simultaneously characterize physical and biogeochemical processes within the coupled boundary layers at high spatial and temporal resolution. Measurements will be made from floating platforms, buoys, towers, and autonomous vehicles, utilizing both in-situ and remote sensors. The engineering challenges and level of coordination, integration, and interoperability required to develop these coupled ocean‐atmosphere Super Sites place them in an “Ocean Shot” class.

    Description: Ocean surface winds, currents, and waves play a crucial role in exchanges of momentum, energy, heat, freshwater, gases, and other tracers between the ocean, atmosphere, and ice. Despite surface waves being strongly coupled to the upper ocean circulation and the overlying atmosphere, efforts to improve ocean, atmospheric, and wave observations and models have evolved somewhat independently. From an observational point of view, community efforts to bridge this gap have led to proposals for satellite Doppler oceanography mission concepts, which could provide unprecedented measurements of absolute surface velocity and directional wave spectrum at global scales. This paper reviews the present state of observations of surface winds, currents, and waves, and it outlines observational gaps that limit our current understanding of coupled processes that happen at the air-sea-ice interface. A significant challenge for the coming decade of wind, current, and wave observations will come in combining and interpreting measurements from (a) wave-buoys and high-frequency radars in coastal regions, (b) surface drifters and wave-enabled drifters in the open-ocean, marginal ice zones, and wave-current interaction “hot-spots,” and (c) simultaneous measurements of absolute surface currents, ocean surface wind vector, and directional wave spectrum from Doppler satellite sensors.

    Notes: Ceramide mono (CMH) or dihexoside (CDH) fractions from Trypanosoma cruzi (Dm28c clone) were identified as glucosyl and lactosylceramides containing non-hydroxylated fatty acids. The di-glycosylated form was much more efficiently recognized by sera from T. cruzi-immunized rabbits, indicating that glycosylation influences antigenicity. Fatty acid hydroxylation was also a determinant of serological reactivity, since an α-hydroxylated CMH, only present at the Y clone, was recognized by the hyperimmune sera. In summary, these data indicate that T. cruzi CMHs with non-hydroxylated fatty acids are unable to induce antibody responses in animal hosts, which is reverted by the addition of a sugar residue or an α-hydroxyl group.

    Notes: Although many theoretical industrial organization models are based on the existence of a critical mass of exogenously "brand loyal" consumers, we find little empirical evidence supporting these assumptions in the orange juice retail market. There are very few loyal consumers. More importantly, the frequency with which stores conduct sales affects the share of loyal types so that loyalty is endogenous rather than exogenous. Households' demographics have statistically significant but economically minor effects on switching behavior. Switching across frozen and refrigerated states is very common, leading to more complicated substitution patterns and less loyalty than one observes looking at each state separately.

    Notes: This paper investigates consumer reactions to changes in information provision regarding organic production. Quantitative analyses focus on the actual implementation of mandatory labeling guidelines under the National Organic Program. The unique nature of the fluid milk market in combination with these regulatory changes allows us to place a value on information sets under different labeling regimes. Hedonic price functions provide an initial reference point for analyses of individual responses. A random utility discrete choice model serves as the primary econometric specification and allows consideration of consumer preference heterogeneity along observable household demographics. Our results indicate that the USDA organic seal increases the probability of purchasing organic milk. An initial hedonic price function approach, as well as simulations within the discrete choice framework, suggests that consumers value the change in labeling regulations with regard to organic production. Our results further suggest that consumers substitute away from milk carrying the rBGH-free label. This may indicate that consumers pay less attention to these labels in the time period investigated compared to results found in studies that use earlier time periods.

    Notes: The accurate determination of the magnetic viscosity parameter Sv requires the calculation of a new parameter η=(∂Mrev/∂Mirr)Hi which describes the dependence of reversible magnetization on irreversible magnetization. Measurements of the magnetic viscosity were performed at 300 K on the major demagnetization curves of two different nanocrystalline permanent magnetic materials: (i) melt-spun and flash-annealed Pr4Fe78B18 and (ii) mechanically alloyed and heat-treated Sm18Fe33Co49. We show that η is proportional to the intrinsic reversible susceptibility χrevi, in good agreement with predictions of the moving Preisach model. Measurements of the reversible susceptibility were made in order to determine η. Experimental values of η are positive on the major demagnetization curve in both materials, resulting in substantial corrections to Sv near Hc. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Enhanced-remanence Pr4Fe78B18 alloys were produced by using a high heating rate/short time anneal, known as flash annealing. Partially amorphous ribbons were produced by melt spinning and then annealed for 10–20 s at temperatures 600–820 °C by passing current through the sample. Coercivity increases of up to 15% were systematically observed in relation to furnace-annealed material. Mössbauer spectra showed that flash annealing resulted in significant amounts of Pr2Fe23B3 and reduced quantities of α-Fe. Our best flash-annealed material (600 °C/20 s) had Hc=3.5 kOe, Mr/Ms=0.77, and (BH)max=11.1 MG Oe. The magnetic remanence curves Mr(H), obtained for different initial demagnetized states (thermal, ac, dc+, dc−), and the remanence Md(H), obtained for an initially saturated state, were determined for the construction of Henkel plots (HP). The HP for ac and thermally demagnetized Pr4Fe78B18 are very similar and show both magnetizing and demagnetizing interactions. There is no significant difference between the HP of furnace and flash-annealed samples. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
