Interactions between two finite-core hetons are investigated numerically in a two-layer quasigeostrophic model. A heton is a pair of opposite-sign vortices in adjoining layers. The point vortex analysis by Hogg and Stommel [Proc. R. Soc. London Ser. A 397, 1 (1985)] is generalized and the influence of finite cores is specified. Three types of interaction depending on the stratification and initial separation between the hetons are identified. In particular it is found that, for a relatively weak stratification, a heton-specific interaction can prevent the normal merging of same-layer vortices.
