    Description: The pharaoh cuttle Sepia pharaonis Ehrenberg, 1831 (Mollusca: Cephalopoda: Sepiida) is a broadly distributed species of substantial fisheries importance found from east Africa to southern Japan. Little is known about S. pharaonis phylogeography, but evidence from morphology and reproductive biology suggests that Sepia pharaonis is actually a complex of at least three species. To evaluate this possibility, we collected tissue samples from Sepia pharaonis from throughout its range. Phylogenetic analyses of partial mitochondrial 16S sequences from these samples reveal five distinct clades: a Gulf of Aden/Red Sea clade, a northern Australia clade, a Persian Gulf/Arabian Sea clade, a western Pacific clade (Gulf of Thailand and Taiwan) and an India/Andaman Sea clade. Phylogenetic analyses including several Sepia species show that S. pharaonis sensu lato may not be monophyletic. We suggest that “S. pharaonis” may consist of up to five species, but additional data will be required to fully clarify relationships within the S. pharaonis complex.

    Description: Two water bodies of the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea located in the South of Iran and different vertebrate aquatics inhabiting there consist of fishes (Osteichthyes and Chondricthyes), marine mammals, sea snakes and reptiles. A total of 860 fish species belongs to 31 orders and 142 families have been identified and reported. Amongst them, some important species have been studied from point of molecular genetics and population genetics such as croaker, silver pomfret, cobia, sardines, lanternfishes…. . On the other hand, from marine mammals a total of 10 species of dolphins, 14 species of whales and one species of dugong were identified.Also, 9 species of sea snakes have been reported from the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea belongs to 6 genus and 2 subfamilies of Hydrophidae family. It should be mentioned that no genetic studies have been done on marine mammals and sea snakes till now. In addition, a total of 5 species of sea turtles have been reported from the study area and there are few background on genetic studies for main species in the Persian Gulf.

    Description: The biological aspects of Sepia pharaonis was studied during years 2006-07. The studied area restricted to the Bahrekan in Khouzestan province covering the depths of 2 up to 25m. The sampling methods were gillnet and bottom trawl. A total of 310 specimens collected, of which there wasn’t found any cuttlefish in the study area from July to October (5 months). The collected samples were transferred to the laboratory ashore for further biological measurements consist of: Mantle length, Body weight, sex determination. Gonado-Somatic Index, and determination of Spermatophoric Index, Spawning season, Food preference, Maturity stages and chemical analysis for food value determination. The results showed that the overall sex ratio is about M:F= 2:1 with percentage of 67.41% for males and 32.50% for females. Males are significantly bigger than females with average mantle length (ML) of 233.3 and 269.3 mm for female and male, respectively; with body weight of 1102.3 and 1450.6 g. The mantle length body weight relationship was found W=0.001 ML 2.540 (R2= 0.92) Female as: W= 0.0015 ML 4797 (R2= 0.93) male From point of feeding, the food preferences results indicated that fish is considered as main food, crabs as minor food and other marine organisms such as bivalvia and gastropods as random food. The highest vacuity Index (CV) and empty stomachs was determined for March-April and the lowest value was is December. Also, the maximum GSI was estimated for March-April months in which showing coherrances with the lowest food preference. The maximum spermatophoricfilaments were 856 and 45 for male pharaoh cuttlefish with mantle length of 300 and 185 mm, and on the other hand this values for fecundity were estimated 1589 and 53 for female specimens with 254 and 198 mm mantle length. The spawning season occurs in April- March in which accompany with migration of pharaoh cuttlefish towards shallow waters. The fishing season would be in this period in w.

    Description: The fishing data of 1814 hauls during 393 fishing day s activity (2008-2010) in the Oman Sea were collected from F/V Fanoos-2, Fanoos-3, Fanoos-3 and Fanoos-4. It was found that the total mean CPUE of pelagic fishes were 1903 kg/h of which 1bout 1115 kg/h (58%) belong to lantern fishes and the others belong to hairtail, bigeye croaker and threadfin bream with a total CPUE of 788 kg/h considered as by-catch. Also, the maximum CPUE of lanternfish were in months January to March with values of 2473, 2160, 2784 and 2198 kg/h. A comparison between years 2008, 2009 and 2010 show that the CPUE of lanternfish were 1356, 1148 and 936 kg/h, and for by-catches were estimated 1034, 854 & 581 kg/h, respectively; in which it shows a descending trend. The distribution pattern maps for different seasons were prepared and it was found that the density is decreased from spring to winter with a descending trend of CPUE from 4900 to 2500 kg/h. The catch statistics show that the fishing season including towing depth, position of fishing ground and engine power are the main parameters affecting on amount of catch. Also a comparison between different vessels show that the highest amount of catch belonged to F/V Fanoos-2 with a CPUE of 2233 kg/h higher than the F/V Fanoos-3 with a CPUE of 1893 kg/h; and this value was estimated 1111 & 772 kg/h for vessels Fanoos-5 and Fanoos-6 as the lowest ones. On the other hand, the feeding regime of Pennahia anea was studied. A total of 188 specimens were seasonally collected; and different food indices such as VI, FI, FP, GaSI and food frequency were calculated. The annual mean GaSI was 1.1; and the average VI was 78.7% and the food preference was identified as Fishes (77%, main food), Crustaceans (19%, minor food) and Molluscs (4%). The Trichiurs lepturus (hairtails) were identified as the other main predator including Purple-back flying squid. The aging of Benthosema pterotum was done using sagitta otolith and the mean age was found about 349 days and it was proved that they have a short life span with less than one year old. The groth rate (mmd-1) of lanternfish has negative correlation with increase of body size and body weight.

    Description: Demersal resources in the Gulf of Oman are one of the main objectives for both industrial and traditional fisheries. In order to implement a rational management of these resources; the research project of “stock assessment of demersal resources in the Gulf of Oman” were carried out as a monitoring survey in 2003 The objectives of project were: 1) Identification of catches composition of demersal fishes 2) To estimate the biomass and CPUA of demersal resources 3) To determine the distribution pattern of commercial fishes 4) To determine the ratio of commercial, non-commercial fishes and amount of bycatches The studied area was restricted to the borderline with Pakistan in Gwatr (61 25 E) in the east and strait of Hormuz (57 00 E) in the west and isobath of 100m in the south, covering depths of 10 to 100 m with a total area of 1700 nm2. The R/V Ferdows-1, a stern trawler equipped with a fish bottom trawl was used for sampling. To collect the catch data, 107 stations were selected in a random stratified design distributed in different depths and area. The total area was stratified to 7 primary strata, and 4 different sublayers of 10-20, 20-30, 30- 50 and 50-100 m. The swept area method was used to assess and estimate the amount of biomass and CPUA (catch per unit of effort). The total catch was classified to 3 main groups of: a) The commercial demersal fishes, b) The non-commercial demersal fishes c) The non-demersal group The total biomass of all groups was estimated 88346 tons of which 52478 tons belonged to jellyfishes. In this year there was an unpredictable and high bloom of jellyfishes scattering in all area of the Gulf of Oman. The total biomass of fishes was estimated 35808 tons of which 19391 tons were commercial fishes. Meanwhile the amount of non-commercial fishes was calculated about 15102 tons.

    Description: In conformity with the sex determination of Gracilaria corticata in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea, a total of 41 samples were collected from two stations of Bostaneh region (northern Persian Gulf, 54° 38´ E / 26° 30´ N) and Lipar regions (northern Oman Sea, 60° 49´ E / 25° 15´ N). The specimens were cultured in PES media for observing the different life stages. The anatomical structures of thallus were taken into consideration. The diploid tetrasporophytes and spermatangia in thallus of male’s gametophytes; and Carpospore and cystocarps of female were determined. Due to DNA extraction, the parasites and epiphytes were cleaned and then the under growing sections were sectioned using liquid nitrogen. After extraction of DNA, by using 20 different primers according to ISSR molecular indicator, the sex diversity and genetic diversity of populations were studied; and four primers were selected ultimately . The obtained results were analyzed by GenAlex and PopGen softwares. In total, 74 bands, all polymorphisms, were propagated. According to PIC index, polymorphism separation of primer C (0.33) was higher than other primers. The Marker Index was measured between 4.48 and 6.51 with mean Shannon’s index of 0.46. The genetic similarity amongst algae was 96%. The genetic diversity inter and intra populations had significant differences of which 83% of total diversity was related to the intra diversity and 17% was related to inter diversity populations. The highest genetic distance belonged to the specimens 5 (Bostaneh) and 35 (Lipar), and it indicated the inter populations diversity in addition to intra population. As an overall conclusion, these populations can be considered as broodstocks for hybrid production for further species breeding and also to attain the maximum heterosis in adaptation with environment. In Ward clustering analysis, the dendrograms showed 5 different clusters in genetic distance of 12.18 of isomorphic phases. The PCA analysis as a complementally method was used for attest the findings. In this research, the ISSR primers could determine the male and female gametophytes and diploid tetrasporophytes in which the primer A (bands of 1200 & 1700 bp) specific for diploid tetrasporophyte and band of 300 bp specific for male were produced. The primer C showed the bands of 820 & 900 bp for diploid tetrasporophyte, and 500 bp for female gametophyte. The primer AB (990 bp) for male, 520 bp for female and 1600 & 1900 bp for diploid tetrasporophyte were specified. The primer ABC showed the specific band of 1100 bp for male; 500 bp for female; and 1200 & 1500 bp for diploid tetrasporophytes.

    Description: Regarding to monitor of demersal resources in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea, and also biomass and CPUA estimation of them, a series of research cruises (5 cruises per year) were carried out by R/V Ferdows-1covering the area from 49 00 E in the west (Khoozestan provice) to 61 25 E in the east (Gwater) in a 5 years program form 2004 up to 2008 (no cruise in 2006). The study area was stratified into 17 strata (A to Q) of which 10 starta (A to J) were in the Persian Gulf and 7 strata (K to Q) were in the Oman Sea, covering the depths of 10-50m in the Persian Gulf and 10-100m in the Oman Sea. A total of 316 stations were randomly selected. The biomass and CPUA were estimated by Swept Area method. The comparison between two regions indicated that the percentage of density of demersal fishes in the Persian Gulf during years 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008 were 3.3, 3.9, 2.3 and 2.4 times more than the Oman Sea and totally 70-80% of total biomass was calculated for the Persian Gulf. Also a comparison among 17 starta, the highest biomass was found for starta C & D in the Bushehr province waters. The amount of CPUA for both regions of the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea was compared and it was concluded that in years 2004 and 2005, the mean CPUA in the Persian Gulf was partially higher than the Oman Sea with 1.06 & 1.20 times more; and on the contrary for the next two years this value was higher in the Oman Sea with 1.3 times more. The highest CPUA of demersal resources for the Oman Sea belonged to the strata K & O for years 2004, 2007 and 2008 and for year 2005 was for L and strata. It can be concluded that the north-west of Oman Sea has the best condition of biomass of commercial and non-commercial species and the O stratum will be in the second ranking. With review the mean CPUA in different depth-layers for years 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008, it was concluded that with increasing the depth, the mean CPUA is decreased in which the CPUA values in depth-layer 10-20m for these years were 8.3, 3.0, 2.1 & 1.6 times more than depth-layer 50-100m. The comparison of mean CPUA for 10 strata of the Persian Gulf showed that in years 2004 and 2005, the mean CPUA of demersal fishes in the Hormuzgan province waters was higher than in Bushehr province waters (1.2 times more). In total, the highest maen CPUA belonged to F (Naiband to Mogham) and G (Mogham to Farour) in Hormuzgan waters. On the contrary, in years 2007 and 2008 this value in Bushehr waters was 1.3 times higher than western part of Hormuzgan waters with the highest value in D stratum(Boordekhoon to Dayyer). Also the comparison of mean CPUA for different depth-layers, it was found that the mean CPUA has ascending trend with increasing the depth, with the highest value in depth-laer of 30-50m in which contains the 55-68% of total biomass. The lowest biomass is found in depth-layers of 10-30m. Totally, the minimum CPUA and biomass for both commercial and non-commercial species belonged to a stratum located in Khouzestan province waters and it was shown the over-exploitation of resources in this area. The comparison between commercial and non-commercial groups in both ecosystems , it was concluded that the density of commercial species was higher than non-commercial ones , and in all years the Persian Gulf indicated higher values than the Oman Sea.
