Description: After depletion of the Russian sturgeon Acipenser gueldenstaedtii Brandt & Ratzeburg, 1833 and stellate sturgeon Acipenser stellatus Pallas, 1771 stocks at the end of the 20th century, their abundance in the Azov and Black Sea Basin has been maintained through the release of the juveniles obtained by the means of artificial reproduction. Resulting from the strengthening protection of the aquatic living resources and gradually increasing number of the released juveniles, since 2014, as evidenced by the research studies, an increase in the population abundance of these fish species and their biomass is observed in the Azov Sea (from 42 t in 2015 to 998 t in 2022). Unstable state of the sturgeon populations in the coastal waters of the Azov Sea predicated the relevance of this work. Its aim was to investigate the distribution and age–length composition of the populations of the sturgeon fish species in the coastal waters of the Azov Sea. This study was based on the data on age–length composition collected over the course of the investigation of sturgeon by-catches in stationary pound nets in the coastal waters of the Azov Sea within an administrative unit Primorsko-Akhtarsky District (Yasensk and Achuevo Spits). According to its results, out of all sturgeon species, in the autumn season, the stellate sturgeon prevailed—53 %; the share of Russian sturgeon was 43 %, and for beluga sturgeon, it was 4 %. In summer, the Russian sturgeon share in the catches was 79 %, and for stellate sturgeon, it was 21 %. There have also been recorded some differences of the Russian sturgeon and stellate sturgeon length composition between the early spring and middle autumn, which can result from the fact that the sturgeon individual of greater length leave their wintering sites in the Azov Sea open waters earlier and sooner enter the coastal waters in spring. Conclusions. This study makes it possible to improve the assessment of the stock status and distribution for the sturgeon fish species in the Azov Sea.

Notes: Abstract A phenomenological model is proposed for the evolution of microcavities in materials under load based on a study of the kinetics of brittle fracture in a linearly elastic deformable medium containing a microcavity. The basic principle of the model is that, during deformation of a material containing a micropore, fluctuations of its shape occur. The surface tension at the micropore-medium interface stabilizes these fluctuations but if the load exceeds a critical value, these fluctuations may begin to evolve. In so doing, they distort the shape of the microcavity. These fluctuations are none other than cracks. This concept of crack growth and their nature has a close analogy with the evolution of dendrites formed in supercooled melts as a result of the loss of stable crystal shape. An analysis is made of the laws governing the evolution of a microcavity and local loss of shape stability under steady-state pressure for the case of a sphere containing a quasispherical cavity.

Notes: Abstract A study is undertaken into the kinetics of phase transitions in solids under a load at a fixed temperature. The critical size of the micropores forming at a given load in the course of a phase transition in a material is found. The steady-state flux of pores in size space and the time required to reach this state, which depend at a given load on the surface energy of the solid and on an additional parameter characterizing the boundary kinetics of microdefects, are calculated. The parameters found in this work, which describe the onset of the latent stage in the fracture of a solid and the intensity of defect formation in the material in this stage, are new in the mechanics of fracture. This approach allows generalization to load-induced structural and martensitic transitions.

Notes: Abstract The spectral and kinetic parameters of the X-ray luminescence of ZnSe crystals doped with Zn, Se, and Te were investigated during the growth process at temperatures in the range 80–500 K, and also after annealing in Zn vapor. ZnSe crystals grown from a stoichiometric mixture, or mixture containing chalcogenide impurities, typically produce the minimum level of afterglow and a rapid rise of X-ray luminescence, as well as a shift of its peak from the infrared region toward shorter wavelengths after annealing in zinc. ZnSe crystals grown from material with excess of Zn have a relatively low X-ray luminescence yield and a substantial level of afterglow. It is assumed that the growth of Te-activated crystals is accompanied by the development of thermally stable complexes of the form V ZnTeSe that act as radiative recombination centers. The introduction of excess Zn into the initial mixture produces a reduction in the concentration of V Zn and, hence, in the concentration of radiative recombination centers. It is shown that, for free-electron concentrations n〈1018 cm−3, the afterglow time constant τ can be described as a function of n by a model of radiative recombination that involves a single impurity level, whereas for n〉1018 cm−3, the time constant decreases with increasing n, which cannot be explained in terms of the simple model. It is suggested that radiative recombination centers of a new type are produced as a result of prolonged annealing in Zn vapor.

Notes: The kinetics of order formation in symmetric diblock copolymers is investigated using a nonlinear dynamic equation. The equilibrium solution is the periodic pattern of the ordered state. The theory describes both the regime of weak and strong segregation. In the latter case we find structure formation to proceed on two time scales: a rapid formation of kinks in the concentration profile is followed by a slow ordering of the kinks on to a periodic lattice. Explicit formulae for the temperature dependence of the relaxation times are derived. The results are found to agree qualitatively with experimental observations. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
