    Notes: Abstract Silver-activated metaphosphate glass samples show a dose-dependent radiophotoluminescence (RPL) after exposure to ionizing radiation. RPL is discriminated from stray light and parasitic luminescence due to the different decay times by use of uv-laser pulse excitation and time-resolved photon detection. A computer controlled single-photon counting system is set up for quantitative evaluation of the RPL signal. A linear relationship between RPL and absorbed dose is proven down to the sub-mGy range. The measuring technique allows glass dosimeters to be applied even at doses corresponding to the environmental radiation incidence per month.

    Notes: Abstract A laser microprobe mass analyzer has been developed. It is intended for application in biomedical and physiological research. A frequency-doubled ruby laser is focussed through an incident light microscope to a spot of minimally 0.5 μm in diameter on a thin section specimen of 0.1–1.5 μm thickness. The microplasma generated from the irradiated volume is analyzed in a time-of-flight mass spectrometer recording the complete spectrum for each shot. From lithium doped epoxy resin (5 ppm by weight), used as an organic standard, 1.4×10−19g or 1.4×104 atoms of the6Li isotope have been detected. This sensitivity corresponds to that of ion microprobes but is at least an order of magnitude higher than obtained with electron probe X-ray microanalyzers.

    Notes: On experimentally deposited kaolinite, illite, and Ca-bentonite consolidated under their own load or by additional vertical pressure, the progress of compaction in relation to excess pore water pressure, mass physical properties, gravitational mass movements in a tilted tank, and erodibility under running water in a flume were studied. The very low consolidated sediments near the mud/water interface do not obey the generally used theory in soil mechanics. They show a different, non-linear relationship between void ratio or water content and depth below the sedimentary surface on the one hand, or effective overburden pressure and shear strength on the other. The same is true of other physical properties such as permeability, which changes considerably with depth and time of consolidation.High sedimentation rates on slopes induce shallow sediment flow, whereas at low rates and critical slope angles different types of slope failures including the breaking up of water-rich sediment into sharp boundered blocks are observed.Flume studies on soft clay muds show three different types of erosion: continuously suspending, discontinuous erosion of crumbs or shreds, and wavy deformation of the clay surface with disintegration of particles from the crests. The critical tractive stress depends not only on clay type, void ratio, and shear strength, but significantly also on the ‘geologic history’of the clay (i.e. deposition from thin suspension or dense slurry, fabric, consolidation and swelling generating minute inhomogeneities etc.).The experiments may lead to a better understanding of all mechanical processe's including pore-water flow taking place near or not far below the sediment/ water interface.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung Die Intensität der interstellaren Linien ist bedingt durch die Konzentration der absorbierenden Atome und deren Geschwindigkeitsverteilung (Doppler-Effekt) infolge a) thermischer Geschwindigkeit, b) Turbulenz und c) galaktischer Rotation. Auch unter sehr allgemeinen Voraussetzungen erweist es sich als unmöglich, den Ca+- und Na-Atomen dieselbe Geschwindigkeitsverteilung zuzuschreiben. Nachdem die Überlagerung von Turbulenz und galaktischer Rotation bzw. rechteckiger undMaxwellscher Geschwindigkeitsverteilung sowie die entsprechenden Wachstumskurven eingehend untersucht sind, werden die Na- und Ca II-Linien getrennt behandelt. Durch Heranziehung der „Y-Kurven“, welche das Dublettverhältnis als Funktion der Gesamtabsorption z. B. der stärkeren Komponente für verschiedene Verhältnisse von Rechtecks:Maxwell-Breite darstellen, gelingt es, die AnzahlN H der absorbierenden Atome je cm2-Säule, sowie die mittlere Turbulenzgeschwindigkeitv D als Funktion der EntfernungD zu ermitteln (Abb. 8 und 9). Der galaktische Längeneffekt der Gesamtabsorption und des Dublettverhältnisses der Natriumlinien wird berechnet und ergibt sich — in hinreichender Übereinstimmung mit den Beobachtungen — als unerwartet klein. Der anschauliche Grund hierfür wird an Hand der neuen Berechnungen zur Überlagerung von Rechtecks- undMaxwell-Verteilung aufgezeigt.
