Notes: Using a fatigue-testing method by which a fatigue crack can be propagated in a film adhered to cover an elliptical through-hole in a base plate, annealed rolled copper films have been fatigued. The effects of rolling textures and annealing twin boundaries on fatigue crack propagation behaviour are discussed. The fatigue crack propagates in a large zigzag pattern in the TC specimen (crack perpendicular to the rolling direction), while the crack propagation path in the RC specimen (crack parallel to the rolling direction) is nearly straight. Further, the fatigue cracks propagate slower toward the perpendicular direction than toward the parallel direction. After fatigue testing, the crystallographic characteristic of rolling textures around the fatigue crack in the annealed film is analysed using the EBSD (electron backscatter diffraction) system. Because the annealing twin boundary is in the same plane as the slip of the face-centred-cubic metal, the fatigue crack tends to propagate along the slip line initiated along the annealing twin boundary.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung In dieser Arbeit betrachten wir Iterationsverfahren höherer Ordnung zur Lösung einer Polynomgleichungf(z)=0.
Notes: Abstract In this paper, we consider iterative formulae with high order of convergence to solve a polynomial equation,f(z)=0. First, we derive the numerator of the Padé approximant forf(z)/f′(z) by combining Viscovatov's and Euclidean algorithms, and then calculate the zeros of the numerator so as to apply one of the zeros for the next approximation. Regardless of whether the root is simple or multiple, the convergence order of this iterative formula is always attained for arbitrary positive integerm with the Taylor polynomial of degreem for a given polynomialf(z). Since it is easy to systematically obtain formulae of different order, we can choose formulae of suitable order according to the required accuracy.

Notes: Abstract The new method was developed with the objective to meet the universal demand for the prediction of the abundance of the rice stem-borer,Chilo suppressalis Walker, after 30 years’ pending state. The degrees of infestation were assessed by the sequential sampling test under the prevailing three categories, low, moderate and high in terms of percentage infested rice hills. The numerical table (Col. 1st in table I) available for this purpose in the case with the first generation of the borer has been constructed newly according to the formulae, P=1−e−m, and m=aμb, which were derived originally byKono & Sugino (1958) from the data concerning the second generation of the borer (Col. 2nd in table I). Through this table, the difference has been clarified between the case with these two generations, and the quantitative relation between P and μ has been generalized greatly. Thus, by connecting ecologically the rice plant damage caused by this rice stemborer with the population density of the borer, the way has been opened to forecast practically the abundance of the rice stem-borer at each generation.

Notes: [Auszug] Water samples were collected during a cruise (TRI-DENTE-3, February-March 1963) by R/V Caption Canepa of the Argentine Navy Hydrographic Service, along the transect of Drake Passage (Fig. 1). The microquantities of uranium present in the samples were determined fluoro-metrically by using fused ...

Notes: Abstract The distributions of trace elements in Shield, Ace and Burton Lakes of the Vestfold Hills were investigated. Three aspects are discussed as follows: (1) the vertical distribution of 18 trace elements in the three lakes, (2) the behaviour of trace elements in the lakes, especially that of manganese in Shield Lake, and (3) the origin of trace elements in antarctic saline lakes. High concentrations of trace elements were found in these coastal saline lakes, when compared to open ocean water. We suggest that the peak of total extractable manganese, found at 20 m in Shield Lake, was related to the oxic/anoxic water interface brought about by microbiological activity. Solid phase manganese at the upper oxic layer may have precipitated and then reached the anoxic boundary to be there reduced to manganese ion. This dissolved manganese may then have diffused upwards to be reoxidized to a solid form. This cycle, repeated many times, may have produced the Mn profile. The alkali, alkaline earth elements and Cl were probably derived from relict seawater. Other elements were present in similar concentration ratios to those of South Polar aerosols. Residence time calculations indicate that fallout of aerosol particles, themselves derived from various sources, is capable of accounting for the measured concentrations of some trace elements in Shield Lake. This source of trace elements may be significant for other antarctic saline lakes.
