Notes: In this paper, ZnO films are deposited on Freestanding Thick Diamond (FTDF) byplasma-assisted Metal Organic Chemical Vapour Deposition (MOCVD). Diethyl zinc, O2, and N2Oare applied as precursors and different substrate temperatures are used to achieve high quality ZnOfilms. The influence of substrate temperature on the properties of ZnO films is systematicallyinvestigated by X-ray diffraction, Hall measurements, and electron probe microanalysis.Experimental results demonstrate that ZnO films deposited at 600°C and 73Pa displays fine electricalquality and Zn/O atomic ratio plays an important role in the electrical property of ZnO films

Notes: Bilayers Fe/Au-Cu and Fe/Ag-Au made by vacuum evaporation were studied. The magneto-optical polar Kerr rotation and reflectivity spectra were measured in the region from 400 to 700 nm. In the magneto-optical Kerr rotation spectra of bilayers Fe/Au-Cu and Fe/Ag-Au with the thickness of Fe layer less than the light penetration depth, there is a broad enhancement of the magneto-optical polar Kerr rotation with a Kerr peak near the plasma edge in the reflectivity spectra of Au-Cu and Ag-Au alloys. The peak shifts toward the long wavelength side with increasing Cu and Au content in Au-Cu and Ag-Au alloys, respectively. Our results show that the composition of the reflector in our bilayer structures can shift the wavelength range of the magneto-optical Kerr rotation enhancement. Interpretation and discussions are given.

Notes: Vertical stacking of organic light emitting devices (OLEDs) that emit the three primary colors is a means for achieving full-color flat panel displays. The physics, performance, and applications of stacked OLEDs (SOLEDs) are discussed in this and the following paper (Papers I and II, respectively). In Paper I, we analyze optical microcavity effects that can distort the emission colors of SOLEDs if not properly controlled, and describe design principles to minimize these parasitic effects. We also describe the fabrication and operating characteristics of transparent contacts that are an integral part of SOLEDs. We demonstrate that both metal-containing and metal-free transparent electrodes can serve as efficient electron and hole injectors into the stacked organic semiconductor layers. Two different transparent SOLED structures (metal-containing and metal-free) that exhibit sufficient performance for many full-color display applications will be discussed in Paper II. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Vertical stacking of organic light emitting devices (OLEDs) that emit the three primary colors is shown to be a means for achieving efficient and bright full-color displays. In Paper I, we addressed stacked OLED (SOLED) design and fabrication principles to optimize emission colors, operating voltage, and efficiency. Here, we present results on two different (metal-containing and metal-free cathode) SOLED structures that exhibit performance suitable for many full-color display applications. The operating voltages at 10 mA/cm2 (corresponding to video display brightnesses) are 6.8, 8.5, and 12.1 V for the red (R), green (G), and blue (B) elements of the metal-containing SOLED, respectively. The respective subpixel luminous efficiencies are 0.53, 1.44, and 1.52 cd/A, and the Commission Internationale de L'Éclairage (CIE) chromaticity coordinates are (0.72, 0.28), (0.42, 0.56), and (0.20, 0.22). In the high transparency metal-free SOLED, an insulating layer was inserted between the two upper subpixels to allow for independent grounding of all color emitters in the stack. At operating voltages of 12–14 V, video display brightnesses were achieved with luminous efficiencies of 0.35, 1.36, and 1.05 cd/A for the R, G, and B subpixels, respectively. The respective CIE coordinates for R, G, and B emissions are (0.72, 0.28), (0.26, 0.63), and (0.17, 0.28) in the normal viewing direction, shifting inperceptibly as the viewing angle is increased to as large as 60°. Finally, we discuss addressing schemes of SOLED displays, and compare them with other strategies for achieving full-color, OLED-based displays. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Bilayers Nd-Fe/Cu and Nd-Fe/Al made by vacuum evaporation were studied. The magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) and reflectivity spectra were measured. For Nd-Fe/Cu with low Nd content and small thickness of Nd-Fe layer there is a peak in the MOKE spectrum and a broad MOKE enhancement. The position is located near the plasma edge of Cu. When the content of Nd exceeds 37 at. %, there is no Kerr peak in the MOKE spectrum of Nd-Fe/Cu. When the thickness of the magnetic layer is larger but still less than the light penetration depth, the position of the peak moves towards the long-wavelength side. For Nd-Fe/Al there is a broad enhancement in the short-wavelength region, but no Kerr peak occurs no matter how the magnetic layer changes. The results presented show that the necessary conditions for MOKE enhancement in bilayers are suitable values of n and k of the reflector, whether the reflector has a plasma edge or not, and the enhancement also depends on the properties of the magnetic layer.

Notes: We demonstrate a photolithographic technique to fabricate vacuum-deposited organic light emitting devices. Photoresist liftoff combined with vertical deposition of the emissive organic materials and the metal cathode, followed by oblique deposition of a metal cap, avoids the use of high processing temperatures and the exposure of the organic materials to chemical degradation. The unpackaged devices show no sign of deterioration in room ambient when compared with conventional devices fabricated using low-resolution, shadow mask patterning. Furthermore, the devices are resistant to rapid degradation when operated in air for extended periods. This work illustrates a potential foundation for the volume production of very high-resolution, full color, flat panel displays based on small molecular weight organic light emitting devices. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We demonstrate a vacuum-deposited organic light emitting device which emits from its top surface through a transparent indium-tin-oxide anode. This device employs a novel protective cap layer which prevents damage to the organic layers during sputter deposition of the anode, while also improving hole injection. Mechanisms of current transport and carrier injection from the contacts are investigated. This device configuration allows for integration of organic light emitting devices with n-channel field effect transistors used in display active matrix backplanes. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Purpose - The aim of this study is to evaluate implementation of an integrated management system (IMS) based ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards for construction firms. Design/methodology/approach - Supported by a structured questionnaire survey, this paper examines several related issues in the implementation of IMS in construction firms in China. The researchers interviewed the auditors of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards and senior managers of ten construction firms. The structured questionnaires were sent to 300 construction firms in China. Among them, 68 completed questionnaires were received. Findings - The findings reveal that a majority of the firms support an integration of the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards. "Similarity" and "compatibility" between the two standards are considered as the main reasons for pursuing such an integration. The benefits resulted from the integration include "avoidance duplication of procedures", "reduced conflict of procedures", and "reduced requirements for resources". The research also finds that organizations need technical guidance and support from certifying bodies to complete the integration. Practical implications - Proposes some useful suggestion for the contractors which are implementing (or will implement) both ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards. Originality/value - It provides a possible solution by IMS with combining ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 for the contractors which are implementing (or will implement) both ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards. The IMS could help the contractors to overcome the challenges faced by them and achieve continual improvement.

Notes: Purpose - This paper aims to unveil the conditions of implementation of ISO 9001 standard in design organisations, identify the critical factors affecting design quality, and explore the main threats to impair sustainability of design organisations in Chinese economy system transition. Design/methodology/approach - Using a structured questionnaire survey, a structured questionnaire was sent to the senior management representatives of the 100 design organisations ISO 9001-certified in building and civil engineering. The relative importance index (RII) was employed to identify the factors affecting design quality and the major threats to sustainable development of design organisations. Findings - The result shows that the major motivation for implementing ISO 9001 was to seek to improve management and organisational culture. The benefits resulted from the implementation of the standards were: standardisation for internal management for internal operations; increase confidence from clients for market effects, and reduce design deviations for effectiveness improvement. Moreover, the critical factors affecting design quality were identified including "commitment to quality of leader of project design team", "technical skills of leader of project design team", "commitment to quality of the designer", "organising skills of leader of project design team", "experience of leader of project design team", and "design organisation's supervision and control on quality". An additional finding shows that the top threat to impair sustainability of design organisations is "immature design market" in China. Practical implications - Proposes some useful suggestions for the design organisations that are implementing (or will implement) ISO 9001 standards. Originality/value - The study could help the design organisations to overcome the challenges facing them towards the adoption of the quality scheme and achieve continual improvement.
