The UK Health and Safety Executive's (HSE) Explosion and Flame Laboratory in buxton has its roots in coal-mining safety, undertaking research into mining explosives in 1926. But today, in support of the HSE's duties across a wise range of industries, energetic materials research at Buxton covers testing, detonation, chemical analysis, thermal stability, blast characteristics, characterization, classification, thermal radiation and deflagration studies encompassing mining and commercial explosives and energetic and self-reactive substances. International collaboration occurs on a number of fronts and is increasingly sought in pursuing HSE's aims in safety promotion.
