    In: The geology of the South Orkney Islands
    Description / Table of Contents: Signy Island, the best known of the South Orkney Islands, is composed of a regionally metamorphosed sequence of marbles, para-amphibolites and quartz-mica-schists (the Basement Complex of probable Precambrian age), whose stratigraphical succession has been established by earlier workers. These rocks, which have undergone post-kinematic crystallization, belong to the albite-epidote-amphibolite facies, and they probably represent crystallization at a higher grade of metamorphism than the rocks situated to the north on Coronation Island; retrograde metamorphism is purely a local phenomenon. It is believed that these metamorphic rocks were originally sediments of epicontinental facies, i.e. quartzites, mudstones, marls and limestones, and that during metamorphism they underwent a sequence of vein mineralization which was both pre- and post- kinematic. In spite of the widespread veining, there is no conclusive evidence of igneous activity on Signy Island. Only one phase of crystallization is indicated by the rocks examined, although K-Ar age determinations have shown that a much later and more feeble orogeny, which released radiogenic argon, affected these rocks approximately 185±7 m.yr. ago. The metamorphic rocks of the South Orkney Islands are lithologically and petrologically comparable with those of the Elephant and Clarence Islands group, but they differ from the Basement Complex of the Antarctic Peninsula, where orthogneisses are present.

    Description / Table of Contents: A systematic study of more than 160 specimens belonging to 12 ammonite families is given. At least 38 species are recognized but poor preservation of most specimens makes them only generically determinable. One new heteromorph genus, Antarcticoceras, is proposed. Ten species are identified with or compared with known forms and seven are recognized as new, although their preservation is such that only four of these have been formally named: Bochianites gracilis, Antarcticoceras antarcticum, Sanmartinoceras (Theganeceras) grande and Silesites antarcticus. Other small heteromorphs and one oppeliid probably belong to new genera. The faunas are notable for their content of heteromorph forms; oppeliids, desmoceratids and silesitids are locally abundant. At least four distinct faunas ranging from Berriasian to Lower Albian age are recognized. The close proximity of the highest and lowest stratigraphical levels in the area (on either side of Pluto Glacier) suggest the presence of a large-scale fault in the locality of the glacier. In the appendix the known occurrences of the aconeceratid genus Sanmartinoceras s.s. are reviewed and it is concluded that the genus is not necessarily restricted to beds of Upper Aptian age or younger but it may also occur in the Lower Aptian.

    Description / Table of Contents: Lower Cretaceous faunas are well known in the Fossil Bluff Formation of Alexander Island but the species described here include the first extensive Upper Jurassic ammonite faunas from the area. Although the preservation is generally poor, 33 separate species are described, and there are doubtless others among the indeterminate material. In general, the ammonites show close affinities to extra-Antarctic forms and most are readily assigned to or compared with described species. Some new species are present but only in the case of Virgatosphinctes acuticostus sp. nov. is the material considered to be good enough to be formally named. The ammonites are grouped into four faunas of Kimmeridgian, Tithonian, uppermost Tithonian and Berriasian ages. The Tithonian fauna is the most extensive and is characterized by the two genera Virgatosphinctes and Aulacosphinctoides. Both South American and Malagasy Republic / Himalayan elements are present buth in the uppermost Tithonian and Berriasian the faunas are less varied and their affinities appear to be closest to those of the Himalayan / Indonesian region. Although Lower and Upper Tithonian species are present in the "Tithonian" fauna, their stratigraphical distributions are not known well enough to subdivide the fauna. The palaeogeographical implications of the faunas are discussed but the data are too scanty at present to draw firm conclusions.
