    Description: Abstract
Description: Reflected signals of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) have been investigated for various applications in remote sensing over the last three decades. The overall research field of GNSS reflectometry includes the retrieval of sea ice parameters as an important application. For this purpose, GNSS reflectometry data have been recorded over the Arctic Ocean with a dedicated receiver setup during the MOSAiC expedition (Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate). The setup was mounted on the German research icebreaker Polarstern (AWI, 2017) that drifted during nine months of the expedition with the Arctic sea ice. The here described data set comprises the expedition’s first leg in autumn 2019. It includes the drift period of the ship from 27th September until 14th December at about 82°N to 87°N in the Siberian Sector of the Arctic. The data set is based on essential contributions of setup & data recording (by GFZ), maintenance & data transfer (by AWI and MOSAiC partners), processing to data level 1 & documentation (by DLR-SO). The level 1 data consist of GNSS signal power estimates of the direct and reflected signal. Data appear in event files (netcdf format) sorted into day folders. Each event includes observations of a satellite on a continuous track, here, in a satellite elevation range from min. 1° to max. 45°. A dedicated GNSS reflectometry receiver, of GORS (GNSS Occultation Reflectometry Scatterometry) type, was used for the measurements. It is equipped with four antenna front-ends. A master channel and two slave channels are assigned to the front-ends. The master channel tracks the GNSS signal on the direct link. The slave channels are dedicated for observations of reflection events: one at left-handed (LH) and another one at right-handed (RH) circular polarization. The respective up-looking master antenna and port-side looking slave antenna (dual-polarization) are set up with a short baseline on the ship’s observation deck, about 22 m above the water level. The given ship-based geometry results in events with rather short excess paths of the reflected signal relative to the direct signal, much less than the range of a code chip (about 300 m for GPS L1 C/A). Interferometric pattern of direct and reflected signal contributions are observed in the channel. A separation step is required in further processing.

Description: In the designated snowpits, 100cm3 of snow was collected in the field, melted and measured for salinity in the laboratory on board Polarstern. Salinity of the melted snow samples was measured using the YSI 30 Salinity, Conductivity and Temperature sensor. The transport containers, as well as the YSI tip, were cleaned using milli-Q water. Salinity profiles were measured at the same intervals as density and stable isotope profiles.

Description: In the designated snowpits on the MOSAic expedition a 100cm3 sample of snow was measured for density in the field, approximately every 3 vertical centimetres. The same snow volume was melted for salinity measurements and sealed into glass jars onboard Polarstern. As a result, δ18O and δ2H isotope composition was measured at the same intervals as density and salinity profiles, included in the snowpit dataset bundle. These samples were then transported to the WSL laboratory in Switzerland to analyse the stable water isotopes (δ18O and δ2H). This dataset provides details on the date and coordinates of the snowpit event, the height of the sample in the snow profile, and the corresponding isotope composition. This dataset includes the isotopic composition of the samples obtained in the winter months (October 2019 to May 2020). After analysis of the samples, and comparing the values to a parallel dataset (doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.948511), it was identified that our samples needed to be corrected due to evaporative fractionation during sample storage. The corrected values are included in this published dataset and we recommend that future studies using this dataset use these corrected values only. The correction was done by calculating the mean of this dataset to the mean of the parallel dataset and correcting for the difference. As a result, the δ18O was corrected by -6.4‰, the δ2H was corrected by -36.4‰. The new values are located in the columns 'δ18O H2O [‰ SMOW] (Corrected)' and 'δD H2O [‰ SMOW] (Corrected)'. We would like to emphasise that calculations of d-excess values for this dataset need interpreting carefully.

Description: The Optical IP Camera was mostly observing the snow surface and aligned instruments at the remote sensing site during the MOSAiC expedition in the central Arctic, saving 4K images in JPEG format in 5 minute intervals. Between October to March it was mostly working continuously, while the data from April to September is more sparse. Occasional transects (remote sensing transects) and experiments were recorded in higher acquisition rates. The camera is equipped with high brightness NIR LED spotlights, turning on automatically in low light situations. Over the course of the expedition, the camera had several remote sensing instruments and the snow and ice surface in the field of view and can be used as a supportive dataset for events at the remote sensing site. It was operated always in conjunction with an infrared camera (doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.940717), pointing at the same targets but with a wider opening angle. The same camera model was also attached to the remote sensing hut (doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.939443) during parts of the campaign.

Description: This datasets contains ground-based on sea-ice floe observations from the Helsinki University of Technology RADiometer (HUTRAD) at microwave frequencies 6.8 GHz 10.65 GHz and 18.7 GHz taken during Leg 3 (April - May, 2020), Leg 4 (July 2020) and Leg 5 (August - September 2020) of the MOSAiC campaign. Two types of data are provided. Raw observations of individual measurement periods (hutrad_*.dat) for leg 3 to leg 5 and calibrated brightness temperatures (HUTRAD_*.txt) for leg 3 and leg 5. The raw observations of HUTRAD (counts) are calibrated to brightness temperature using a standard two-point calibration approach by assuming a linear relation between the measurements of the cold sky and measurements at ambient temperature using a microwave absorber. Details about the data format, usage and the instrument can be found in the file Data_manual.pdf.

Description: The small-scale surface roughness is important for scattering of shortwave visible and higher-frequency microwave radiation. A standard digital camera (Olympus tough TG-5) and a set of reference targets were used to take sets of images that can be processed using multi-image photogrammetry into high-resolution small-scale digital elevation models (DEMs). The DEMs can be used to estimate roughness of the snow surface and of the snow-ice interface. The reference targets were distributed around a small ( ~ 0.6 m x 0.6 m) area, and pictures were taken from different angles, including all targets in each image, and ideally overlapping by at least 80%. Pictures were always taken with the maximum wide-angle of the camera. During polar night, a headlamp was taken to illuminate the scene before pictures were taken. Image sets of the surface were taken before the snowpit was excavated. Image sets of the snow-ice interface were taken after the detailed snowpit measurements, and the remaining snow was brushed off the ice surface using a brush. Description: A Garmin GPSmap 62sc device was taken to each snowpit event to get the location measurement. If no GPS file is found, further GPS details can be retrieved from the SMP device and the NIR camera. The event metadata also has location information in the form of a location name for each event. This location name indicates a site of interest and can be used to track repetitive measurements in the moving absolute location on the floe. Please direct inquiries to; David Wagner (PS122/1), Martin Schneebeli (PS122/2), Amy Macfarlane (PS122/3 and PS122/4), Ruzica Dadic (PS122/5).
