Notes: Abstract This paper (Part I) and the sequel (Part II) prove the existence of a smooth, non-trivial, finite action solution to the SU (2) Yang-Mills-Higgs equations on ℝ3 in the Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield limit. The proof uses a simple form of Morse theory known as Ljusternik-Šnirelman theory. Part I establishes that a form of Lusternik-Šnirelman theory is applicable to the SU (2) Yang-Mills-Higgs equations. Here, a sufficient condition for the existence of the aforementioned solution is derived. Part II contains the completed existence proof. There it is demonstrated that the sufficient condition of Part I is satisfied by the SU (2) Yang-Mills-Higgs equations.

Notes: Abstract This paper gives a mathematically rigorous proof of the positive energy theorem using spinors. This completes and simplifies the original argument presented by Edward Witten. We clarify the geometric aspects of this argument and prove the necessary analytic theorems concerning the relevant Dirac operator.

Notes: Abstract The configuration space for the SU(2)-Yang-Mills-Higgs equations on ℝ3 is shown to be homotopic to the space of smooth maps fromS 2 toS 2. This configuration space indexes a family of twisted Dirac operators. The Dirac family is used to prove that the configuration space does not retract onto any subspace on which the SU(2)-Yang-Mills-Higgs functional is bounded.

Notes: Abstract This paper proves that there exists a finite action solution to the SU(2) Yang-Mills-Higgs equations on ℝ3 in the Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield limit which is not a solution to the first order Bogonol'nyi equations. The existence is established using Ljusternik-Šnirelman theory on non-contractible loops in the configuration space.

Notes: Abstract At a solution of the Yang-Mills equations onS 4, or the Yang-Mills-Higgs equation on ℝ3, the hessian of the action functional defines a natural second order, elliptic operator. The number of negative eigenvalues of this operator is bounded below by a multiple of the relevant topological charge. The proof of this assertion requires a relative index theorem for Dirac-type operators on ℝ n ,n≧3.

Notes: Abstract The general O(2) symmetric Yang-Mills equations are derived. An ansatz for O(2) symmetric merons is presented and it is shown that any connection in this ansatz will have SU(2) topological charge density which is a sum of delta functions at points in a plane with weights ± 1/2. It is shown that any connection in this ansatz will beC ∞ away from these points.

Notes: Abstract We prove that a set ofN not necessarily distinct points in the plane determine a unique, real analytic solution to the first order Ginzburg-Landau equations with vortex numberN. This solution has the property that the Higgs field vanishes only at the points in the set and the order of vanishing at a given point is determined by the multiplicity of that point in the set. We prove further that these are the onlyC ∞ solutions to the first order Ginzburg-Landau equations.
