Notes: A simple Stokes flow problem, corresponding to an incompressible flow between two eccentric cylinders rotating alternately, is investigated numerically. It is demonstrated that for a wide range of system parameters the fluid particles can evolve along highly chaotic orbits, thereby providing an example of so called "Lagrangian turbulence.'' Passive scalar distributions can rapidly evolve into structures of remarkable spatial complexity that can be characterized in terms of the underlying phase space dynamics. An investigation is made of the ability of simple area preserving mappings, deduced from the physical problem, to reproduce the dynamics obtained from the exact solution.

Notes: Abstract Bioconversion of (4R)-(+)-limonene to (4R)-(+)-α-terpineol by immobilized fungal mycelia of Penicillium digitatum was investigated in batch, repeated-batch and continuously fed systems. The fungi were immobilized in calcium alginate beads. These beads remained active for at least 14 days when they were stored at 4 °C. Three different aeration rates were tested. The highest yield was obtained at a dissolved oxygen level of 50.0 μmol/l. α-Terpineol production by this fungus was 12.83 mg (g beads)−1 day−1, producing a 45.81% bioconversion of substrate. Repeated-batch bioconversion showed yield decreases in the second and the third cycles. Regeneration with nutrient media after the third cycle improved the bioconversion yields. With continuous bioconversion, the half-life was dependent on the aeration. The optimum conditions with a continuous reactor were at an aeration rate of 0.3 standard l/min and a dilution rate of 0.0144 h−1.

Description: Four new species of Trigonalyidae are described and illustrated from Qinling Mts (Shaanxi, NW China): Bareogonalos xibeidai Tan & van Achterberg, sp. n., Jezonogonalos mandibularis sp. n., J. shaanxiensis sp. n., and Taeniogonalos paraclypeata sp. n. Orthogonalys hirasana Teranishi, 1929, is re-instated and reported from China. The female of Taeniogonalos alticola (Tsuneki, 1991) is described for the first time. In total, 18 species are known from Shaanxi province, 20 species for NW China, and eight described species are newly recorded for Shaanxi: Jezonogonalos luteata Chen et al., 2014, Orthogonalys hirasana Teranishi, 1929, O. elongata Teranishi, 1929, Pseudogonalos hahnii (Spinola, 1840), Taeniogonalos alticola (Tsuneki,1991), T. formosana (Bischoff, 1913), T. taihorina (Bischoff, 1914), and Teranishia glabrata Chen et al., 2014. Poecilogonalos maga Teranishi, 1929, syn. n. and Taiwanogonalos claripennis Tsuneki, 1991, syn. n. are new synonyms of Taeniogonalos taihorina (Bischoff, 1914) and Taiwanogonalos alishana Tsuneki, 1991, syn. n. of Taeniogonalos alticola (Tsuneki, 1991). Revised keys to species of the genera Bareogonalos, Jezonogonalos, and Orthogonalys are included.

Description: Four new species of the genus Rhogadopsis Brèthes, 1913 (Hymenoptera, Braconidae, Opiinae) are reported from Shaanxi province (NW China). The new species (R. aciculifera sp. n., R. cracentata sp. n., R. longivena sp. n., and R. moniliata sp. n.) and two newly recorded species for Shaanxi and Ningxia provinces (R. mediocarinata (Fischer, 1963) and R. pratellae (Weng & Chen, 2005), respectively) are keyed and fully illustrated. Rhogadopsis mediocarinata (Fischer, 1963) is a new combination.

Description: Four new species of the genus Gasteruption Latreille, 1796 (Hymenoptera: Evanioidea: Gasteruptiidae: Gasteruptiinae) are reported from NW China: three from Shaanxi province and one from Ningxia province. The new species (G. bicoloratum Tan & van Achterberg, sp. n., G. huangshii Tan & van Achterberg, sp. n., G. pannuceum Tan & van Achterberg, sp. n., and G. shengi Tan & van Achterberg, sp. n.) and three newly recorded species (G. sinepunctatum Zhao, van Achterberg & Xu, 2012, G. boreale (Thomson, 1883) and G. oshimense Watanabe, 1924) are keyed and fully illustrated. In total, seven species are known from Shaanxi province, which is approximately half of the expected number. The East Palaearctic specimens provisionally identified as G. tournieri Schletterer, 1885, by Zhao et al. (2012) are included under G. oshimense Watanabe, 1924.

Description: The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of 20 d starvation on growth, survival, histomorphology and ultrastructure changes in the digestive system of juvenile red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii). Juveniles were divided into two groups: a food-deprived group and a control group at 9 day after hatch (DAH). Individuals were sampled at 14, 20, 29 DAH. During the 20 d fasting period, the mean body weight and total body length of crayfish fluctuated around 10.17 mg and 8.12mm respectively, and the mortality was zero. Histomorphological changes of digestive system were observed in the food-deprived group after 20 days of starvation: the esophagus and stomach walls were thinning, the epithelium atrophied to cuboidal, nuclei were darker and smaller, and nucleolus was difficult to observe; the midgut and hindgut showed wider volume, thinning wall, atrophied epithelial and muscularis and shorter ridges; and hepatopancreas tubule lumens were wider, the lipid droplets in R-cells were smaller and less, and the quantity of typical B-cells decreased. Changes in the ultrastructure of starved crayfish were also observed: the mitochondria of midgut epithelium and R-cells were swollen and vacuolated, and the ridges of which were fractured and reduced. In addition, the electron density of cytoplasmic matrix of R-cells decreased, and the quantity of glycogen granules and lipids also decreased. Changes in the ultrastructure of B-cells were similar to those of R-cells. Though degeneration in histological structure and function of digestive organs were obvious during starvation, juvenile P. clarkii was able to endure a relative long-term starvation.
