Notes: Abstract Cholera, as it was regarding each infective disease of which nobody knew its aetiologic agent or, in any way, if its agent was present really, was for the Calabrian people an unknown enemy that nobody knew anything about either its behaviour or the modality of its penetration into the human body. During many years characterized by a medical methodological obscurantism, Calabrian people lived, during the different choleric epidemics, on a daily life based upon the ignorance, and the pseudo-treatments, and pseudo-physicians. During the cholera epidemics, not only the people groped in the dark, but also the governmental authorities were confused because were subdivided into those who supported the theory of the epidemics spread and those who supported the theory of the contagion spread. It must be emphasized that from the XX century, when the pathologies due to natural agents were reduced and were substituted with those due to humans, cholera influenced very much the demography and the social-cultural features of the Southern Italy.

Notes: Abstract In the present study, we have described and compared both the number and the types of the mistakes that were made during reading of the Ishihara plates by 3,926 students attending the secondary schools in the province of Cosenza (Calabria, Southern Italy) and by 546 Calabrian university students all without colour-blindness. There were no qualitative differences in the types of mistakes made by the two groups of subjects during their reading of the Ishihara plates. Moreover, we have reported both the mean frequencies and types of colour-blindness in only the province of Cosenza. During this study, it was shown that the ishihara test is reliable during screenings for the diagnosis of colour vision deficiencies, as shown by some previous investigations.

Description: The frequencies of low-activity alleles of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase in humans are highly correlated with the prevalence of malaria. These "deficiency" alleles are thought to provide reduced risk from infection by the Plasmodium parasite and are maintained at high frequency despite the hemopathologies that they cause. Haplotype analysis of "A-" and "Med" mutations at this locus indicates that they have evolved independently and have increased in frequency at a rate that is too rapid to be explained by random genetic drift. Statistical modeling indicates that the A- allele arose within the past 3840 to 11,760 years and the Med allele arose within the past 1600 to 6640 years. These results support the hypothesis that malaria has had a major impact on humans only since the introduction of agriculture within the past 10,000 years and provide a striking example of the signature of selection on the human genome.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Tishkoff, S A -- Varkonyi, R -- Cahinhinan, N -- Abbes, S -- Argyropoulos, G -- Destro-Bisol, G -- Drousiotou, A -- Dangerfield, B -- Lefranc, G -- Loiselet, J -- Piro, A -- Stoneking, M -- Tagarelli, A -- Tagarelli, G -- Touma, E H -- Williams, S M -- Clark, A G -- G12-RR03032/RR/NCRR NIH HHS/ -- HL03321/HL/NHLBI NIH HHS/ -- T37-TW00043/TW/FIC NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2001 Jul 20;293(5529):455-62.
Notes: Summary A contribution to the study of physical properties of pathological human erythrocytes has been obtained by applying the electron spin resonance spectroscopy with spin labels. The rotational correlation time, τc, of the spin label tempamine has been used for a comparative study of internal microviscosity in normal and in homozygous β-thalassemic erythrocytes. Results claim for a decreased microviscosity in pathological erythrocytes as compared with normal ones. These findings suggest the hypothesis of a different water structuring process in the physiological and pathological situation inside red blood cells.

Notes: Summary A contribution to the study of the physical properties of the human-erythrocyte membrane has been obtained by applying electron spin resonance spectroscopy with three spin labels at different penetration levels in the membrane. The order parameterS as a measure of the membrane fluidity and the hyperfine coupling constanta′ N as a measure of the membrane polarity have been determined. A comparative study ofS anda′ N between normal and homozygous β-thalassemic erythrocytes has been performed. Results showed an increased polarity and a decreased fluidity in the pathological erythrocyte membrane as compared to the normal one. A model for understanding these differences has been proposed.
