Notes: [Auszug] Two typical syrups, A and B, have been prepared ; they have the following compositions (by weight) : A B Fibroin 15 16 Lithium bromide 46 50 Water 39 34 100 100 The fibroin used in this work was obtained by thoroughly 'degumming' a specimen of Bombyx mori silk of Syrian origin. Syrup A was ...

Notes: [Auszug] The tests were made at 25° C. on a pooled sample of ox synovial fluid: this contained 0-08 gm. of hyaluronic acid/100 ml., and its relative viscosity (measured at 25° C. in an Ostwald viscometer of 2 ml. capacity and water-time 12 sec.) was 16-8. j The results of two experiments with the ...

Notes: [Auszug] PREVIOUS work1,2 has indicated that in hydrated stearanilide the bound water is held by a micellar structure. It has also been shown1 that a chain containing at least sixteen carbon atoms is necessary for water-binding by anilides of normal fatty acids. Further ...

Notes: [Auszug] DEBYE has reported1 that the velocity of thermal diffusion, relative to that of ordinary diffusion, is much greater in polymer solutions than in simple solutions. This result is likely to arouse a great deal of interest, and the following recent observations of our own concerning ...

Notes: [Auszug] THE phenomena occurring when a closed vessel containing a simple liquid is heated to a temperature above the critical temperature of the liquid are well known. What happens when a solution, and more especially a solution of a substance having a very small vapour pressure, is treated in the same ...

Notes: [Auszug] A PHENOMENON of some interest was observed during the preparation of stearanilide. The finished product, recrystallized from absolute alcohol and from chloroform, melted at 93° C. When recrystallization from alcohol was being carried out, a portion of the alcoholic solution was poured into a ...

Notes: [Auszug] I HAVE suggested1 that in the hydrated anilides of stearic and palmitic acids, the ‘bound’ water is held by a micellar structure. Some further evidence supporting this view has now been obtained. Quantities (0-40 c.c.) of distilled water were added to 50 c.c. samples of a ...

Notes: [Auszug] I HAVE previously described the formation of hydrated stearanilide1. An investigation of some of the factors influencing the binding of water by substituted amides of the normal fatty acids is now in progress. Since experiments of an exploratory character had shown that both the ...

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Untersuchung gewisser Theologischer Eigenschaften (Viskosität, Scherelastizität, Spinnbarkeit, Weissenbergeffekt) von Lösungen des Polymethylmethacrylates zeigt, daß für eine gegebene Konzentration des Polymeren (z.
Notes: Abstract Investigation of certain rheological properties (viscosity, shear-elasticity, ‚Spinnbarkeit’, ‚Weissenberg Effect’) of solutions ofpoly(methyl)methacrylate shows that, for a given concentration of the polymer (e. g. 3%), large changes of the observed properties can be produced by altering the composition of the solvent and/or temperature. Such differences appear to be associated particularly with the magnitude of the stress relaxation time: when this is relatively large (presumably when conditions favour cohesion between the macromolecules), the polymer solutions exhibit markedly both ‘Spinnbarkeit’ and the ‘Weissenberg Effect’.
