Notes: In recent years, chitosan/inorganic composites have attracted increasing attention due toits fascinating properties and potential applications in biodegradable materials, drug release, electrochemical sensor, packaging materials and so on. Chitosan/inorganic composites are expectedto be as an effective way to overcome shortcomings of slow flocculating speed of chitosan particles, not good enough to meet those wide range of applications in wasterwater treatment. In this study, novel chitosan/clay/PAC (polyaluminium chloride) composite was prepared, and it was used intreating effluent from dying and finishing process. One set of orthogonal experiments wereconducted to optimize the experimental condition, and the results showed that removal of waste dyeis affected by the dosage of chitosan, PAC, clay, pH and treatment time. The experiments resultsindicated that the effluent from dying and finishing process treated by the prepared compositesbecame obviously fade, and its COD (chemical oxygen demand) decreased from original1398.2mg/L to 197.6mg/L, the removing rate reached 85.9%

Notes: Analytical expressions for crack-tip higher order stress functions for a plane crack in aspecial functionally graded material (FGM), which has an variation of elastic modulus in 1 2 powerform along the gradient direction, are obtained through an asymptotic analysis. The Poisson’s ratio ofthe FGM is assumed to be constant in the analysis. The higher order fields in the asymptoticexpansion display the influence of non-homogeneity on the structure of crack-tip fields obviously.Furthermore, it can be seen from expressions of higher order stress fields that at least three terms mustbe considered in the case of FGMs in order to explicitly account for non-homogeneity effects on thecrack- tip stress fields. These results provide the basis for fracture analysis and engineeringapplications of this FGM

Notes: The high order discontinuous asymptotic fields similar to the Williams’ solutions tocrack problems in homogeneous materials are obtained by asymptotic analysis for an anti-planeproblem in non-homogeneous materials and the crack at the physical weak-discontinuous interface. These results provide a theoretical basis for engineering application of weak-discontinuity fracture

Notes: It was shown that chitosan and hydroxy-aluminum pillared montmorillonites wereexcellent materials for the removal of dyes and metal ions from effluent of dying and finishing.Chitosan/ hydroxy-aluminum pillared montmorillonite nanocomposites are expected to play amultiplex role in the treating process. In this study, the nanocomposite was prepared by incorporatinghydroxy-aluminum pillared montmorillonite into chitosan solution that diluted acetic acid was usedas solvent for dissolving the chitosan. The ratio of chitosan to the cationic exchange capacity of themontmorillonite was about 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, 4:1 and 6:1, respectively. The nanocomposites werecharacterized by XRD (X-ray diffraction), SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy). The experimentalresults indicated that the presence of hydroxy-aluminum cation was in favor of the chitosanintercalation and the interlayers of MMT was intercalated with the bilayers of chitosan sheets. andthey can be used in absorption of organic and metal ions for dying and finishing effluent

Notes: Crack-tip higher order stress and displacement fields for a mode III crack along thedirection of property variation in a functionally gradient material (FGM), which has a powervariation of shear modulus along the gradient direction, are obtained through the asymptoticanalysis. The asymptotic expansions of crack tip stress fields are derived to explicitly bring out theinfluence of non-homogeneity on the structure of the stress field. The analysis reveals that only thehigher order terms in the expansion are influenced by the material non-homogeneity. Moreover, itcan be seen from expressions of higher order stress fields that at least three terms must beconsidered in the case of FGMs in order to explicitly and theoretically account for non-homogeneityeffects on crack tip stress fields

Notes: Functionally gradient material (FGM) developed for heat-shielding structure is often usedin the very high temperature environment. Therefore, the material property parameters are not onlyfunctions of spatial coordinates but also ones of temperature. The former leads to partial differentialequations with variable coefficients, the latter to nonlinear governing equations. It is usually verydifficult to obtain the analytical solution to such thermal conduction problems of FGMs. If the finiteelement method is adopted, it is very inconvenient because material parameter values must beimputed for each element. Hence, a semi-analytic numerical method, i.e., method of lines (MOLs)is introduced. The thermal conductivity functions do not need to be discretized and remainoriginal form in ordinary differential equations. As a numerical example, the nonlinear steadytemperature fields are computed for a rectangular non-homogeneous region with the first, thesecond and the third kinds of boundary conditions, where three kinds of functions, i.e. power, exponential and logarithmic ones are adopted for the thermal conductivity. Results display theimportant influence of non-linearity on temperature fields. Moreover, the results given here providethe better basis for thermal stress analysis of non-homogenous and non-linear materials

Notes: The hydrodynamic behaviors of a steep density gradient Mg plasma produced by a short driving laser pulse is simulated, and it is shown that the temperature of a shorter scale-length (steeper density gradient) plasma decreases faster. The rate equations of the energy level population are solved using the collisional radiative model. The ground states of MgX, MgXII, and MgXIII, and the 21 energy levels of MgXI, of which the principal quantum number n≤6, are considered in our calculation. The gain coefficients of several possible laser transitions at wavelengths less than 200 A(ring) in the MgXI plasma are presented. Finally the possibility of achieving a soft x-ray laser near the water-window is discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A new method based on Fourier transformation to study the skin effects is presented. Using this method, the field amplitude in plasma is represented in terms of electric conductivity, and the normal and anomalous skin effects are described through one formula by omitting the plasma dispersion or not. The results are in agreement with other publications [e.g., J. P. Matte and K. Aguenaou, Phys. Rev. A 45, 2558 (1992)] for equivalent parameters. But for deeper positions inside a target, which have not been studied by others, it is found that the field amplitude is considerably enhanced due to an anomalous skin effect, even for constant collision frequency. In addition, the skin absorptions and some calculations on an anomalous skin effect for different collision frequencies are also presented. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
