    Description: A new optical method is presented for evaluation of the stress profile in chemically tempered (chemically strengthened) glass based on confocal detection of scattered laser beam. Theoretically, a lateral resolution of 0.2  μ m and a depth resolution of 0.6  μ m could be achieved by using a confocal microscope with high-NA immersion objective. The stress profile in the 250  μ m thick surface layer of chemically tempered lithium aluminosilicate glass was measured with a high spatial resolution to illustrate the capability of the method. The confocal method is validated using transmission photoelastic and Na + ion concentration profile measurement. Compositional influence on the stress-optic coefficient is calculated and discussed. Our method opens up new possibilities for three-dimensional scattered light tomography of mechanical imaging in birefringent materials.

    Description: We investigated the relationship between post-midnight F-region field aligned irregularities (FAIs) and F-layer altitude by analyzing data of a 30.8-MHz radar installed 5at Kototabang, Indonesia (0.2°S, 100.3°E; geomagnetic latitude 10.4°S) and an ionosonde installed at Chumphon, Thailand (10.7°N, 99.4°E; geomagnetic latitude 3.3°N). Chumphon is located near the geomagnetic equator on approximately the same meridian as Kototabang. Case studies show that the altitude of the F-layer rose at Chumphon a half hour before the post-midnight FAIs appeared at Kototabang. The Doppler velocity of the E-region FAIs observed simultaneously by the 30.8-MHz radar was downward, indicating that the F-layer uplift was not caused by the electric field. We also investigated seasonal variations of the post-midnight FAI occurrence and the F-layer altitude. Both the post-midnight FAIs and the uplift of the F-layer were frequently seen around midnight between May and August. The seasonal variation of the midnight F-layer uplift around the geomagnetic equator coincided with that of the post-midnight FAI occurrence at Kototabang. These results suggest that the uplift of the F-layer would play an important role in the generation of post-midnight FAIs. We evaluated the linear growth rate of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability based on the altitude of the F-layer observed at Chumphon. The result shows that the uplift of the F-layer can enhance the growth rate because gravity-driven eastward electric current increases. Therefore, we interpret that the observed FAIs were accompanied by plasma bubble, the growth rate of which was reinforced by the uplifted F-layer.

    Description: Response of the magnetosphere-ionosphere system to a negative impulse of the solar wind dynamic pressure (the negative SI) is studied again with foci of the following three points; multiple convection oscillations, mirror-image relationship between the negative and positive SIs, and appearance of the overshielding potential. When the negative impulse impinges on the magnetopause, the Region 1 (R1)-type field-aligned current (FAC) and R2-type FAC appears alternatively in the dayside polar ionosphere (∼70°, ∼10 hLT and 14 hLT). These ionospheric current systems shift nightward and poleward. This alternative appearance of FACs invokes positive and negative ionospheric potential patterns switching alternatively. It is revealed that the negative SI is accompanied with multiple convection oscillations repeating more than the positive SI. We also notice that the magnetospheric current system producing the preliminary impulse (PI) of the intensive negative SI is a mirror-image of that of the positive SI. The multiple convection oscillations and the mirror-image relationship were not discussed by Fujita et al. (2004) who studied a moderate-amplitude negative SI. In addition, the R2-type FACs induced by the negative and positive SIs tend to yield the overshielding electric potential in the ionosphere. The shielding potential invoked by the SIs has shorter duration than that for the northward turn of the interplanetary magnetic field. The duration is longer for the negative SI than for the positive SI.

    Description: Scattered neutron diagnostics is an indispensable tool for both inertial confinement and magnetic confinement fusion research. For this purpose, a fast-response neutron scintillator with a high cross section for scattered neutrons is strongly required. Recently, based on our material design strategy, we have successfully developed the fast response time Pr 3+ -doped 20Al(PO 3 ) 3 -80LiF glass scintillator for scattered neutron originated from inertial confinement fusion. The matrix glass 20Al(PO 3 ) 3 -80LiF shows good glass forming ability, chemical durability and transparency in the deep ultraviolet region. The purpose of this work is to investigate the glass structure of 20Al(PO 3 ) 3 -80LiF glasses using Raman spectroscopy and to discuss the relationship between physical and scintillation properties and glass structure.

    Description: 〈p〉We quantify the oceanic sink for anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO〈sub〉2〈/sub〉) over the period 1994 to 2007 by using observations from the global repeat hydrography program and contrasting them to observations from the 1990s. Using a linear regression–based method, we find a global increase in the anthropogenic CO〈sub〉2〈/sub〉 inventory of 34 ± 4 petagrams of carbon (Pg C) between 1994 and 2007. This is equivalent to an average uptake rate of 2.6 ± 0.3 Pg C year〈sup〉–1〈/sup〉 and represents 31 ± 4% of the global anthropogenic CO〈sub〉2〈/sub〉 emissions over this period. Although this global ocean sink estimate is consistent with the expectation of the ocean uptake having increased in proportion to the rise in atmospheric CO〈sub〉2〈/sub〉, substantial regional differences in storage rate are found, likely owing to climate variability–driven changes in ocean circulation.〈/p〉

    Description: A multichannel low-energy neutron spectrometer for down-scattered neutron (DSN) measurements in inertial confinement fusion (ICF) experiments has been developed. Our compact-size 256-channel lithium-glass-scintillator-based spectrometer has been implemented and tested in ICF experiments with the GEKKO XII laser. We have performed time calibration of the 256-channel analog-to-digital convertor system used for DSN measurements via X-ray pulse signals. We have clearly observed the DD-primary fusion neutron signal and have successfully studied the detector's impulse response. Our detector is soon to be implemented in future ICF experiments.

    Description: We investigated Pi2 pulsations in the nightside ionosphere that began at 1415 UT (2315LT) on 11 July 2010, and were observed with high temporal (8 seconds) resolution by beam 4 of the SuperDARN Hokkaido radar. These pulsations were simultaneously observed in both the ground/sea scatter echoes reflected from the F region height and in ionospheric echoes from field-aligned irregularities (FAI) in the sporadic Es region. They had the same period of 110 s and approximately no phase lag. From the radar observations and the International Geomagnetic Reference Field model, the amplitude of the eastward ( E EW ) component of the electric field of the Pi2 pulsations in the ionosphere was estimated ~8.0 mV/m in the F region, and ~2.0 mV/m in the E region. Corresponding Pi2 pulsations appeared dominantly in the horizontal northward magnetic field component ( H ) at nearby ground stations, Moshiri (MSR), St. Paratunka (PTK), and Stecolny (STC), with amplitudes ranging from 6 nT (MSR) to 10 nT (STC). At the dominant frequency of 8.8 mHz, the coherences between H and E EW were high (〉0.9), the cross phases of E EW relative to H were −56˚ and −45˚, and the amplitude ratios were 2.7 × 10 5  m/s and 8.4 × 10 5  m/s, in the E and F regions respectively. Based on a comparison of these results with theoretical predictions [ Pilipenko et al ., 2011], we suggest that the concept of a pure cavity mode is not sufficient to explain the combined observations for mid-latitude Pi2 waves, and that the contribution of an Alfvén waves must be taken in account.

    Description: Allergic asthma is caused by the aberrant expansion in the lung of T helper cells that produce type 2 (TH2) cytokines and is characterized by infiltration of eosinophils and bronchial hyperreactivity. This disease is often triggered by mast cells activated by immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated allergic challenge. Activated mast cells release various chemical mediators, including prostaglandin D2 (PGD2), whose role in allergic asthma has now been investigated by the generation of mice deficient in the PGD receptor (DP). Sensitization and aerosol challenge of the homozygous mutant (DP-/-) mice with ovalbumin (OVA) induced increases in the serum concentration of IgE similar to those in wild-type mice subjected to this model of asthma. However, the concentrations of TH2 cytokines and the extent of lymphocyte accumulation in the lung of OVA-challenged DP-/- mice were greatly reduced compared with those in wild-type animals. Moreover, DP-/- mice showed only marginal infiltration of eosinophils and failed to develop airway hyperreactivity.     Description: We report the draft genome sequence of the model moss Physcomitrella patens and compare its features with those of flowering plants, from which it is separated by more than 400 million years, and unicellular aquatic algae. This comparison reveals genomic changes concomitant with the evolutionary movement to land, including a general increase in gene family complexity; loss of genes associated with aquatic environments (e.g., flagellar arms); acquisition of genes for tolerating terrestrial stresses (e.g., variation in temperature and water availability); and the development of the auxin and abscisic acid signaling pathways for coordinating multicellular growth and dehydration response.
