    Notes: Six integral membrane proteins of bacterial, animal, and plant origin, which are believed to function in solute transport, share sequence identity and are grouped together as members of the MIP family. These include the Escherichia coli glycerol facilitator, the major intrinsic protein from bovine lens fibre junction membranes, a plant tonoplast membrane protein, a soybean protein from the peribacteroid membrane, and a Drosophila neurogenic protein. These proteins, each of which appears to consist of six transmembrane helical segments per subunit, apparently arose by internal duplication of a three-transmembrane segment. Phylogenetic‘trees’interrelating these proteins and segments are presented.

    Notes: Summary Germinated pollen of Pinus radiata contains an auxin which is active in the Avena coleoptile test. It differs from all other hormones detected in pine pollen in that it is readily able to diffuse out from the pollen into an agar medium. It is suggested that, following pollination in vivo, the auxin may diffuse from the germinated pollen-tube onto the nucellus, thereby triggering the processes which allow ovule and gametophyte development to proceed. The auxin is water-soluble and may be an indole derivative.

    Notes: Abstract Quantitative field measurements of biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) and biomass production by four different understorey pastures in a Pinus radiata-pasture agroforestry system were determined over a period of one year. The trees were two years old at the beginning of this study and the understorey pastures were being cut and removed for silage. The BNF was determined using the 15N dilution technique. Pastures of ryegrass+clover, cocksfoot+clover, phalaris+clover and lucerne were used. Substantial amounts of BNF were found (71 to 230 kg N ha−1 year−1) with lucerne showing the highest N fixation. However, lucerne derived only 71 to 72% of its N from the atmosphere (%Ndfa) during the spring/summer period compared to 83–97% with clovers, thus the net N demand from the soil was substantially higher with lucerne. This caused increased N stress to the trees. Clover in ryegrass+clover pasture fixed more N than the other grass+clover pastures. Although pasture position in relation to trees did not affect annual pasture total DMY and %Ndfa, pastures north of tree row grew better than those in other positions. Trees significantly affected the BNF of legumes and the botanical composition of pastures with highest BNF and legume production occurring in pastures midway between two rows of trees. These results suggest that it would be advantageous to evaluate different legumes and grasses for tolerance of shade and moisture stress in future studies. As the trees studied were only 1.5 to 3 m in height, their effects on BNF, seasonal pasture biomass production and botanical composition are expected to increase with tree dominance in the ecosystem with time. Amounts of N fixed were related to the productivity (i.e. dry matter and N yield) and seasonal persistence of the legumes. The productivity was high in spring and summer and low in autumn and winter.

    Notes: Summary Spontaneous and Tn10 induced fluorocitrate resistant mutants were isolated and characterized. These mutants were unable to grow on either cis-aconitate or DL-isocitrate but were still able to grow slowly on sodium citrate and normally on potassium or potassium-plus-sodium citrate. These mutants were defective in both citrate transport and citrate binding to periplasmic proteins. Tn10 insertion mutants were unable to produce immunologically detectable amounts of the citrate inducible periplasmic C protein previously shown to bind tricarboxylates. Using a series of tct::Tn10 directed Hfrs the tct locus was accurately positioned at 59 units between srlA and pheA, but was not cotransducible with either gene. In the absence of P22 mediated cotransduction with 16 adjacent chromosomal markers the srlA and tct loci were bridged by using a series of tct flanking Tn10 insertions, and by newly isolated and characterized nalB mutants. In addition the hyd and recA loci were located establishing the gene order in this region of the chromosome as: pheA tct nalB recA srlA hyd cys. Nitrosoguanidine derived tricarboxylate mutations (Imai 1975) were also mapped within the tct locus.

    Notes: Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), after certain thermal and mechanical histories, exhibits stress cracking when exposed to 40% aqueous methylamine. This reagent has also been used for selective degradation of PET films. Stress cracking is shown to occur during degradation only when a specimen supports an internal or externally applied stress, above a critical level. The cracking density in a filament is shown by the present work to increase as the draw ratio is increased or when the fiber is highly annealed. This increased cracking is associated with an increase in the magnitude of the internal residual stress resulting from molecular orientation developed during these processes. Because of this, crack density and fiber birefringence were found to correlate well. In addition, the geometry of the stress-cracking pattern along a filament is affected by internal residual stress since the propagation of spiral and helical cracks results from the effect of a biaxial stress field remaining at the filament surface after processing.

    Notes: Several primary amines have been examined as selective degradative etchants for the investigation of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) morphology. The objective is to remove less ordered regions, leaving crystals intact. The amines include 40% and 20% aqueous methylamine, 70%-40% aqueous ethylamine and pure and 40% aqueous n-propylamine. Weight-loss and x-ray diffraction data show that certain concentration of aqueous amine solution simultaneously degrade and crystallize PET. This observation indicates the hazard of using some of these amine reagents to characterize PET morphology since the crystalline structure found after etching is likely to be a result of solvent-induced crystallization during degradation. Data for 40% aqueous methylamine used at room temperature shows that crystallization does not occur during etching, and in light of earlier research indicates the favorable nature of this reagent as a selective degradative medium for PET. Application of this reagent disclosed that in oriented PET fibers chemical stress cracking occurs, causing the degradative reagent to lose its selectivity.
