Notes: Summary. In empirical studies concerning comparison of economic structures and/or structural changes of economies, it is quite useful to employ an aggregate index to describe the structural difference (similarity). This paper offers an axiomatic characterization of the measurement of structural difference between economies that leads to some difference (similarity) index which is practically useful in empirical studies.

Notes: Abstract.  This paper investigates Allyn Young's two important doctrines concerning the division of labor and roundabout production. First, apart from advancing the state of knowledge, the progressive division of labor that can occur within a given population encourages the adoption of more specialized, differentiated intermediate goods in the production process. Second, the level of division of labor and the extent of the market depend on each other. Using a general equilibrium model with increasing returns to specialization, economies of complementarity between intermediate goods, and transaction costs, we demonstrate that the level of division of labor and the number of intermediate goods increase concurrently as transaction conditions are improved.

Notes: Abstract.  The implications of the international demonstration effect (IDE) for the development of underdeveloped economies have long been studied and debated. Yet few formal analyses exist in the literature, especially regarding its implications for the growth of domestic markets and the division of labour in developing economies. We offer an analysis of endogenous specialization under the IDE, the first of its kind, showing that, far more complicated than the scenario held by conventional wisdom, the IDE makes more difficult the emergence of the market underpinning the domestic division of labour, but facilitates the expansion of the market once it has been developed.

Notes: Abstract This paper develops two models of the lobbying of interest groups to examine the effect of the number and size of interest groups on rent dissipation. In cases where individuals ignore the effect of the lobbying activities on the rent size, the number of groups is negatively related to rent dissipation and there exists an inverse relation between the extent of egalitarianism of within-group rent sharing rules and the total rent dissipation in the symmetric setting. Model two examines the case where each individual in each group takes into account the effect of lobbying activities on the total “pie”, of which she/he competes for a share through within-group and between-group interaction. The relation between the number of symmetric groups and the total rent dissipation is shown to be an inverted “U”-shape, contrary to the conventional wisdom that holds a monotonous relation between the two variables.

Notes: In order to study the effect of blast shake on the stability of tunnel during mining process, finite element analysis software for rock and soil engineering is used to simulate the effect ofblasting shake. In the simulation, a short-time dynamic load is applied to the rock in the blastingzone. Dynamic stress field in the rock mass and distortion in the surface of the tunnel are calculatedwith the finite-element method. Equivalent displacement method is utilized to determine the amountof sudden applied load, the actuation duration and the range of action. Consequently, the maximumcritical explosive content at the critical shake speed of rock mass can be defined

Notes: Summary The secretion of sperm maturation-related molecules by the epididymis is subjected to developmental and hormonal regulation. In the BALB/c mouse, we found that GP-83 and GP-49, two sperm maturationrelated glycoproteins, were secreted by the epididymis. The present study investigated the postnatal development and testosterone-dependence of these two molecules. Histochemical localization in paraffin sections revealed that wheat-germ agglutinin (WGA)-binding sites were first present in the epididymis of 4-week-old mice. The distribution of WGA-binding sites was the same as that of more mature mice, i.e., it was first found in the principal cells of the corpus epididymidis, and gradually appeared in the contents of epididymal tubules. On WGA blots, GP-83 and GP-49 were identified in the corpus, and GP-83 was identified in the cauda of the epididymis. In mice that had received unilateral orchiectomy at 4 weeks of age, GP-83 and GP-49 were present in both intact and orchiectomized epididymides 4 weeks after the operation. In the epididymides of mice that had received bilateral orchiectomy, GP-83 and GP-49 were barely identifiable. However, the presence of these two molecules was restored if testosterone was supplemented immediately after orchiectomy. These results indicate that GP-83 and GP-49 are secreted de novo in the epididymis, and that the secretion of these two molecules is developmentally regulated and androgen-dependent.

Notes: Abstract  The direct interaction of hyaluronic acid (HA) and heavy chain (HC) of the inter-alpha-trypsin inhibitor (IαI) family plays a critical role in the organization and stabilization of the extracellular matrix. The aim of the present investigation was to elucidate the distribution of the IαI HC and HA in adult mouse tissues. An immunohistochemical method using a rabbit polyclonal antibody raised against mouse IαI heavy-chain peptide and a specific probe for HA (biotinylated HA-binding protein) was used to demonstrate an immunolocalization of IαI HC and HA. Distribution and localization of HA was of three types, namely, colocalization with IαI HC itself (cartilaginous tissue and ovary), localization around IαI HC immunostaining (lung, intestine and skeletal muscle), and localization at a small distance from IαI HC or a different distribution pattern (brain, liver, skin and kidney). These results indicate that IαI HC could function as an HA-rich matrix stabilizer on the cells of cartilage and maturing ovary, in which IαI HC shows colocalization with its predominant ligand, HA.
