    Notes: Structural feasibility study on a Slidable One-Touch Extension (SOTE) fitting for profilewalleddrainage and sewer pipes was performed. SOTE fitting was developed for the purpose ofaccommodating large thermal deformation that could occur during installation, which if not treatedproperly in design can cause problems such as loosening of the pipe and in some cases cracking of thesupport constraint. SOTE fitting assembly process was examined via virtual assembly to determinethe structural soundness and thermal deformation behavior was investigated for its design efficiencyand performance. For both analyses the finite-element method was utilized and correspondingexperiments were also performed to support the findings. Finally, cyclic fatigue tests were carried outon fittings followed by the leak proof test to determine integrity of the SOTE fittings. Throughanalysis and experiments SOTE fitting was shown to perform its designed functions with requiredstructural stability

    Notes: We report on investigation of the AC dielectrophoresis aligned assembly deposition(DAAD) of gallium nitride nanowires (GaN NWs) with both the variation of the electric field and thefrequency. Our DAAD methods were used to align and manipulate GaN nanowires as well as toextract the electrical properties of semiconducting nanowires. We observed that the ability of thealignment strongly depends on the magnitude of the AC electric field and frequencies. For the higherAC peak-to-peak electric fields (up to 20 Vp-p), the GaN nanowires have a better alignment across thepatterned Ti / Au electrodes with a high yield rate of ~ 90% over the entire arrays (in our case, 20arrays) in the chip at the 20 kHz. From the transport measurements of our AC aligned GaN nanowiresusing conventional three-probe schemes in field-effect transistor structures, we found that theconductance of the GaN NWs increased for gating voltage greater than zero and decreased for gatingvoltage less than zero, indicating these GaN nanowires have n-type dopants

    Notes: The sensitivity of the microphone is determined absolutely by primary calibrationtechnique based on the reciprocity principle. The free-field calibration has the inherent problem due tothe weak signal received in the microphone. Multi-path noises such as cross-talk and reflectionscorrupt the received signal, and thus the sensitivity evaluation is poor. The time selective method hasbeen widely used as the useful tool to get rid of such noises. However FFT based signal processinginvokes unwanted processing error such as leakage. A well designed frequency window which wouldbe a kind of low-pass filter would reduce the leakage problem, and it helps to separate multi-pathnoises from the directly propagated signal well. The result well shows the advantages in separatingthe noises and the availability in the free-field calibration with the enhanced sensitivity evaluation

    Notes: S-Adenosylmethionine (SAM), the major methyl donor in diverse biological processes, was recently found to be involved in the regulation of differentiation in streptomycetes. Exogenous SAM, in a quantity as low as 2 μM, enhanced antibiotic production and inhibited morphological development of Streptomyces coelicolor M145. Total protein profiling of S. coelicolor M145 revealed that SAM enhanced the expression of oligopeptide-binding components related to ABC transporters that included BldK, a well-known regulatory factor in S. coelicolor differentiation. A radiolabeled SAM feeding experiment verified that exogenous SAM can be imported into the cell, which is under the control of the bld cascade. This study substantiated that BldK serves as a transducer of the SAM signal and uncovered the possible role of oligopeptide import in the regulation of Streptomyces differentiation, particularly in relation to SAM.
