    Description / Table of Contents: Northwest Europe has undergone repeated episodes of exhumation (the exposure of formerly buried rocks) due to such factors as post-orogenic unroofing, rift-shoulder uplift, hotspot activity, compressive tectonics, eustatic sea-level change, glaciation and isostatic readjustment. The main observational legacy of this exhumation around the North Atlantic is preserved in the comparatively young (Mesozoic and Cenozoic) geological record of this region. Despite a rapid increase in the understanding of the exhumation of this area, there are still many unknowns: the relative intensity of the various phases and their geographical variation; mechanisms of uplift; primary causes of exhumation. Tied to these problems is the larger-scale question of whether the circum-North Atlantic is unique or whether its behaviour is typical for passive margins. There have been several attempts in recent years to bring together researchers to address these questions, but these have often focused on one particular geographical area or one particular exhumation phase. Before an integrated story can emerge, disciplines that have traditionally remained apart need to come together: geomorphology and offshore seismic interpretation; Palaeogene and Neogene studies; Scandinavian and British-Irish research schools. This volume represents a first step in this direction by providing an inter-disciplinary set of studies over a wide latitudinal range of the NW European margin. The studies presented here are based on a variety of techniques that have been employed to address the main concerns of North Atlantic exhumation history, including timing, mechanisms and the sedimentary response of the continental margin.     Notes: Abstract Diamicton-dominated shelf glacigenic sequences are characterized on high-resolution seismic records by a structureless to chaotic acoustic texture, often with abundant hyperbolic (point-source) reflections. Existing depositional models, based primarily on seismic data, have been constructed on the basis that this acoustic signature is indicative of subglacial till. However, borehole data from the UK continental shelf indicate that glaciomarine facies are also present. Thus, while this acoustic character may be indicative of diamicton lithofacies, it should not be taken as a predictive genetic indicator of a specific depositional process.

    Notes: Abstract Geotechnical data from Plio-Pleistocene sediments on the Hebrides Slope provide the basis for an analysis of potential factors controlling their acoustic character as observed on high-resolution seismic reflection profiles. Differences in acoustic signature within the sedimentary succession are related to the void index and thus to soil structure and, in turn, to the depositional history of the sediments. In this example, a correlation can be demonstrated between the seismic and geotechnical stratigraphies.

    Description: Following thermal uplift during the late Paleocene to early Eocene, the denudation of the subaerial hinterland provided a massive sediment supply that led to the development of a number of large, prograding sedimentary wedge systems flanking the Hatton and Rockall basins. Regional seismic data mapping and borehole data indicate that the wedges are Eocene in age and have a high percentage of coarse clastic material typical of high-energy, fluvial or near-shore marine environments. The prograding wedges have been mapped and can be viewed as large, clastic fairways within which trapping at a number of scales exists. Seismic interpretation suggests that the wedges are present at various stratigraphic levels within the Eocene and are locally separated by unconformities. However, all pre-date the margin-wide late Eocene unconformity (C30), which resulted in subsidence and deepening of the Rockall and Hatton basins. A marine transgression inundated most former land areas, and a marked change occurred in basinal facies; a change from fluvial/near-shore clastic sedimentation to deep-water mud and ooze deposition influenced by bottom-currents. These conditions persisted throughout most of the Oligocene and Neogene and hence provided a seal for potential hydrocarbon-bearing sand-prone Eocene reservoirs internal to the wedge-systems. Additional sealing potential may be provided by shale layers internal to the wedges. Buried Eocene pinchout lobes, submarine fans at the base of basalt scarp faces and Oligocene slump deposits also provide potential trapping mechanisms. High, and probably unacceptable, risks include biodegradation and poor seal development due to the typically shallow depth of burial of the wedges. However, the majority of the wedges should be treated as analogues, with some of the deeper examples providing some scope for consideration as exploration targets. The scale of the prograding wedge play fairway is massive, with volumes measured in tens of cubic kilometres.
