Notes: The main advantage of quasiperiodicity for the design of photonic and phononic crystalsis the arbitrarily high rotational symmetry, which can be achieved without sacrificing a discreteFourier (Bragg) spectrum. Consequently, the degree of isotropy can be arbitrarily increased leadingto omnidirectional bandgaps. These are important for most applications as for instance wave-guidesor -shields

Notes: It is generally assumed that decagonal quasicrystals show periodically arranged atomic layers only on net planes perpendicular to the tenfold axis and quasiperiodically arranged ones parallel to it. However, there also do exist only slightly puckered atomic layers that are periodically arranged and inclined to the tenfold axis. They coincide with the net planes of the periodic average structures of the decagonal phase and are related to the strongest Bragg reflections. Since they link quasiperiodic and periodic directions, inclined net planes may play a crucial role for growth and stabilization of decagonal quasicrystals. In fact, it is shown how ideal quasiperiodic long-range order and inflation symmetry allow for the existence of inclined net planes with small corrugation and reinforce the relation with the periodic average structures.

Notes: Methods for correcting specimen absorption in X-ray diffraction experiments, dedicated to two-dimensional area-detector systems and broad diffuse scattering phenomena, are implemented and tested. The respective transmission factors, in relation to the crystal or specimen shape, are applied to the intensity of every pixel of the two-dimensional detector. The pixel-wise approach allows for a fully quantitative treatment of continuous diffraction information, such as disorder diffuse scattering or scattering from amorphous materials, which is collected with a two-dimensional detector system. This is in contrast to routine data reduction, where the transmission factors are applied to the integrated Bragg intensities only. Furthermore, it is possible to assign different linear attenuation coefficients to the paths of the incident and scattered beams, as is desirable, for instance, in the case of X-ray holography with an internal resonant scatterer. Broad diffuse scattering data collected with synchrotron radiation and numerical calculations are used to study in detail the influence of experimental parameters on the accuracy of the pixel-wise absorption correction.

Notes: A complex high-temperature furnace has been produced from presintered α-Al2O3 precompacts. The furnace is designed for the Mar345 imaging-plate detector system. Up to now, the design complexity of ceramic parts has been limited by the difficulty of machining hard ceramic materials or by the moulds used in hot-pressing and casting. However, the machining of soft presintered ceramic materials enables the realisation of much more demanding designs, provided that the final sintering shrinkage of the ceramic is homogeneous and predictable. The design of the furnace and its realisation and application in an X-ray diffraction study with synchrotron radiation are presented.

Notes: The non-crystallographic symmetry of d-dimensional (dD) quasiperiodic structures is incompatible with lattice periodicity in dD physical space. However, dD quasiperiodic structures can be described as irrational sections of nD (n 〉 d) periodic hypercrystal structures. By appropriate oblique projection of particular hypercrystal structures onto physical space, discrete periodic average structures can be obtained. The boundaries of the projected atomic surfaces give the maximum distance of each atom in a quasiperiodic structure from the vertices of the reference lattice of its average structure. These maximum distances turn out to be smaller than even the shortest atomic bond lengths. The metrics of the average structure of a 3D Ammann tiling, for instance, with edge lengths of the unit tiles equal to the bond lengths in elemental aluminium, correspond almost exactly to the metrics of face-centred-cubic aluminium. This is remarkable since most stable quasicrystals contain aluminium as the main constitutent. The study of the average structure of quasicrystals can be a valuable aid to the elucidation of the geometry of quasicrystal-to-crystal transformations. It can also contribute to the derivation of the physically most relevant Brillouin (Jones) zone.

Notes: Abstract New ternary borides (Nb,Ru)23B6 and (Ta,Ru)23B6 have been synthesized. The homogeneity regions of these τ-borides have been established from lattice parameter measurements and for TaCo22B6 by microprobe analysis also. The structural chemistry of these phases is discussed.

Notes: [Auszug] "GOOD order is the foundation of all good things", wrote Edmund Burke. For many years, crystallographers were sure that fivefold symmetry and crystalline order were incompatible. But in 1984, D. Shechtman's discovery of grains with icosahedral diffraction symmetry in a rapidly cooled ...
