Abstract:
Notes:
Summary This paper deals with the application of micro methods to industrial materials associated with the coal industry. The need for these methods arises firstly, when the amount of sample available is small, as often happens in research investigations, and secondly when the speed of the determination is much faster on the micro scale than it is on the macro. When the second condition applies it is necessary to ensure that the micro sample taken is a true representative sample, because coal is a heterogeneous material. Details are given of the size to which the coal should be crushed so that the probable error due to heterogeneity is within the necessary limits. Experimental details are given for the determination of moisture, ash and volatile matter in coal, also for carbon, hydrogen and sulphur, and a technique is described whereby all these constituents are determined on one micro sample. Reference is made to the application of colorimetric methods in coal ash analysis and also to the adoption of micro gas analysis technique. A technique is described which enables carbon monoxide to be determined exactly in a 300 ml sample when it is of the order of 0.0001%. In developing this method an investigation was made into the various sources of error which may apply in the micro titration of iodine and a technique is described whereby iodine equivalent to 0.003ml of N/500 iodine solution can be titrated exactly. The methods described therefore cover the range of micro-gravimetric, colorimetric and micro-volumetric, and all have found application in the coal industry.
