Notes: Abstract The stability of a layer of a viscoelastic liquid on an inclined plane is studied within the framework of the model with a time-dependent “memory” in the presence of surface tension. It is shown analytically and numerically that these flows can be stable or unstable depending on the Reynolds number. Profiles of the free surface are found as functions of the Reynolds and Weber numbers.

Notes: Abstract The shape of the free surface of a layer of granular material moving on an inclined plane is studied on the basis of a model of a non-Newtonian fluid with a nonlinear relation between the stress tensor and the shear rate of the flow. For small but finite elevations of the free surface, the governing equations are reduced to a quasilinear Burgers equation. Results of a numerical solution are presented for the case of arbitrary elevations.

Notes: Summary We study the stability of thin films of fluids subject to gravity along inclined planes, obeying a power-law constitutive relation of the Ostwald-de Waele type. A first analysis, in which the inertia terms are ignored, shows such flow to be stable against small, linear perturbations; a second analysis, in which the inertia terms are included, proves that there are stable and unstable regimes that are separated by a critical Ostwald-de Waele number O. Numerical computations for selected values of O demonstrate the decay and growth rate behavior of some finite amplitude disturbances.

Notes: Abstract An inertial flow of a granular material can be described by the laws of conservation of mass, momentum, and energy of random motion of solid particles by invoking some closing relations. In this work, these closing relations are inferred from the dimensional theory. The system of equations obtained is used to determine characteristics of a steady flow of a bed of a granular material down an inclined surface with a microrelief for various Richardson numbers and finite contact times of the particles during their collisions.

Notes: Abstract The stability of non-Newtonian fluid films moving on inclined planes is studied within the framework of the two-parameter Ostwald-de Waele model taking into account surface tension and van der Waals forces. The problem is solved analytically in the linear formulation, and the evolution of finite-amplitude perturbations is determined numerically.

Notes: Abstract The origination of wave motion on the surface of a thin layer of oil is studied. This layer is considered as an incompressible pseudoplastic fluid, and surface tension is taken into account. It is shown analytically and numerically that these flows may be stable or unstable depending on the value of the Ostwald number. Profiles of the free surface are found for various values of the Ostwald and Weber numbers.

Notes: Abstract The stability of a layer of a granular medium on an inclined plane has been studied within the framework of the model of a non-Newtonian fluid with an index of 2, which ensures the experimentally found quadratic dependence of the shear stress on the shear rate. It is shown analytically and numerically that these flows are stable or unstable depending on the value of the generalized Reynolds number relative to the critical value equal to5 cot α.
