Notes: Abstract The possibility of connections between weather and the onset of epileptic seizures has long been suggested (see, for example, the Hammurabi Codex 1600 BC). Work in the 20th Century points to a probability that the onset of both local and generalised epilepsy is significantly influenced by an interaction between genetic and extrinsic factors. In an attempt to clarify the situation a detailed study of the history of 315 attacks from 1 Jan. to 31 July 1981 suffered by a small number of patients in Munich has been undertaken. Although linkages between “classical” meteorological parameters and the onset of seizures are very weak, links with more generalised indexes (e.g. passage of fronts and disturbances) are more promising. However, the correlation between onsets and “atmospherics” of 28 KHz (positive) and 10 KHz (negative) impulses, are significant and call for urgent study.

Notes: Summary The use of energy-dispersive multielement X-ray analysis is described and the radionuclides109Cd and241Am and X-ray tubes combined with secondary targets are compared as X-ray sources. Solid powdered samples of “infinite” thickness are used without further treatment. Calibration standards are prepared from silica gel, and correction factors are derived from the peak heights of Compton scattering. Results for various geological samples and for dust samples are presented. Liquid samples are treated by means of a column or a filter with chelating groups bound to cellulose. A thin layer of the cellulose powder or the filter is analysed with the aid of calibration graphs. Results of multielement trace analysis of standardized water, river water and sea-water are presented and discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The determination of uranium in ores by energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (XFA) is demonstrated for uranium ore samples of known content. For calibration silica gel standards are used. Matrix effects are corrected by measuring the Compton scattering peaks. The radionuclide 109Cd as well as a X-ray tube in combination with Mo or Sn as secondary targets are suited as X-ray sources. The mean relative deviation of the values found from the given values is 5%

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Das Korrekturverfahren mit Hilfe der Compton-Streupeaks erfaßt Fehler, die auf unterschiedlichen Massenabsorptionskoeffizienten bzw.
Notes: Summary Correction via the Compton scattering peaks eliminates influences due to different mass absorption coefficents or densities of sample and standard. Besides that errors caused by incorrect sample position, variations in the high voltage generator and other changes in the equipment are also corrected. In order to separate Rayleigh and Compton scattering peaks a minimum excitation energy is necessary depending on the resolution of the detector. The sensitivity of the method increases with excitation energy. The method becomes particularly simple by measuring the maximum intensity of the Compton scattering peaks. Due to the high intensities short measuring times are sufficient.

Notes: Summary The use of ternary solvent systems as mobile phases in the HPLC separation of selected PTH-amino acids (phe-lys, phe-ile, val-met) is described and it is shown that resolutions are obtained which cannot be achieved with binary phases. The system acetate buffer — acetonitrile — dimethylsulphoxide (50∶30∶20) has proved to be most satisfactory.

Notes: Summary Using a X-ray tube in combination with secondary targets by proper choice of the secondary target high detection limits for ranges of certain atomic numbers are obtained. In the case of heavy elements measurement of L-lines is more favourable. By use of radionuclides as X-ray sources nearly the same detection limits are obtained. In the range of high energies the application of radionuclides has distinct advantages.
