Notes: In an hypothesis-generating case-control study of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, lifetime occupational histories were obtained. The patients (n = 28) were clinic based. The occupational exposure of interest in this report is electromagnetic fields (EMFs). This is the first and so far the only exposure analyzed in this study. Occupational exposure up to 2 years prior to estimated disease symptom onset was used for construction of exposure indices for cases. Controls (n = 32) were blood and nonblood relatives of cases. Occupational exposure for controls was through the same age as exposure for the corresponding cases. Twenty (71%) cases and 28 (88%) controls had at least 20 years of work experience covering the exposure period. The occupational history and task data were used to classify blindly each occupation for each subject as having high, medium/high, medium, medium/low, or low EMF exposure, based primarily on data from an earlier and unrelated study designed to obtain occupational EMF exposure information on workers in “electrical” and “nonelectrical” jobs. By using the length of time each subject spent in each occupation through the exposure period, two indices of exposure were constructed: total occupational exposure (E1) and average occupational exposure (E2). For cases and controls with at least 20 years of work experience, the odds ratio (OR) for exposure at the 75th percentile of the E1 case exposure data relative to minimum exposure was 7.5 (P 〈 0.02; 95% Cl, 1.4-38.1) and the corresponding OR for E2 was 5.5 (P 〈 0.02; 95% CI, 1.3-22.5). For all cases and controls, the ORs were 2.5 (P 〈 0.1; 95% CI, 0.9-8.1) for E1 and 2.3 (P = 0.12; 95% CI, 0.8-6.6) for E2. This study should be considered an hypothesis-generating study. Larger studies, using incident cases and improved exposure assessment, should be undertaken. Bioelectromagnetics 18:28-35, 1997. © 1997 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: Total intensity, Rayleigh light scattering has been used to measure the rms radius, second virial coefficient, persistence length, and excluded volume of homogeneous T7 bacteriophage DNA as a function of Na+ concentration (0.005 to 3.0 M). All parameters decrease sharply as [Na+] increases, and tend to level off at high Na+. The variation of persistence length with [Na+] is consistent with predictions from counterion condensation theory.

Description: Understanding time-temperature histories using apatite fission-track thermochronology involves sample preparation, analysis and then thermal modelling using an appropriate annealing algorithm. A subtle point in this sequence is ascertaining that the sample preparation utilized is compatible with the methodology used in obtaining the data for constructing the annealing data set. This issue is important if one wishes to utilize the relatively new multikinetic annealing algorithm of Ketcham et al. that is implemented in their AFTSolve and HeFTy models which is based on a different etching recipe than those previously used. A preliminary calibration step involves comparing published etch pit diameters for a suite of samples with those analysed by an operator. Results show that the operator can reliably reproduce the calibration data set. We then report a laboratory experiment using samples from Finland and Spain that compares the results obtained using two different etching methodologies (7% nitric acid with qualitative etching conditions and 5.5 M nitric acid at constant conditions). The two raw data sets yield variable results. Comparing the two etching methodologies reveals the influence of this procedure on the kinetic parameter Dpar.

Description: Motivation: In modern sequencing studies, one can improve the confidence of genotype calls by phasing haplotypes using information from an external reference panel of fully typed unrelated individuals. However, the computational demands are so high that they prohibit researchers with limited computational resources from haplotyping large-scale sequence data. Results: Our graphics processing unit based software delivers haplotyping and imputation accuracies comparable to competing programs at a fraction of the computational cost and peak memory demand. Availability: Mendel-GPU , our OpenCL software, runs on Linux platforms and is portable across AMD and nVidia GPUs. Description: The least well-documented intramountain basin within the Tien Shan is the Fergana Basin. Cenozoic deformation is localized along thrusts on the northern and southern flanks, and by transpressive deformation associated with the dextral Talas–Fergana Fault on the eastern margin. We use sedimentological and stratigraphic observations from well-exposed Cenozoic outcrops to describe depositional environments, provenance and sources. These results are combined with interpreted seismic reflection lines and geological cross-sections are extended laterally based on outcrop geology to the north and east. Following a tectonically quiet early Cenozoic period, a progressive change in palaeocurrent indicators suggests Oligo-Miocene uplift of the hinterland, coupled with an increase in higher energy facies in the Massaget Formation. A renewed pulse of deformation tilted Massaget strata and deposited a considerable volume of coarse sedimentary rocks (Baktriy Formation). The younger episode moved progressively basinwards, as imaged by growth–strata relationships in the subsurface. Published work shows that the accumulation of an impressive c. 8 km of Cenozoic deposits cannot be accommodated only by lithospheric flexure produced by a tectonic load. We agree with the hypothesis that the thick sediments preserved in the basin are accommodated by lithospheric folding and propose that this is driven by compression associated with south-vergent Pamir subduction.

Description: The Pamir is the western continuation of Tibet and the site of some of the highest mountains on Earth, yet comparatively little is known about its crustal and tectonic evolution and erosional history. Both Tibet and the Pamir are characterized by similar terranes and sutures that can be correlated along strike, although the details of such correlations remain controversial. The erosional history of the Pamir with respect to Tibet is significantly different as well: Most of Tibet has been characterized by internal drainage and low erosion rates since the early Cenozoic; in contrast, the Pamir is externally drained and topographically more rugged, and it has a strongly asymmetric drainage pattern. Here, we report 700 new U-Pb and Lu-Hf isotope determinations and 〉300 40 Ar/ 39 Ar ages from detrital minerals derived from rivers in China draining the northeastern Pamir and 〉1000 apatite fission-track (AFT) ages from 12 rivers in Tajikistan and China draining the northeastern, central, and southern Pamir. U-Pb ages from rivers draining the northeastern Pamir are Mesozoic to Proterozoic and show affinity with the Songpan-Ganzi terrane of northern Tibet, whereas rivers draining the central and southern Pamir are mainly Mesozoic and show some affinity with the Qiangtang terrane of central Tibet. The Hf values are juvenile, between 15 and –5, for the northeastern Pamir and juvenile to moderately evolved, between 10 and –40, for the central and southern Pamir. Detrital mica 40 Ar/ 39 Ar ages for the northeastern Pamir (eastern drainages) are generally older than ages from the central and southern Pamir (western drainages), indicating younger or lower-magnitude exhumation of the northeastern Pamir compared to the central and southern Pamir. AFT data show strong Miocene–Pliocene signals at the orogen scale, indicating rapid erosion at the regional scale. Despite localized exhumation of the Mustagh-Ata and Kongur-Shan domes, average erosion rates for the northeastern Pamir are up to one order of magnitude lower than erosion rates recorded by the central and southern Pamir. Deeper exhumation of the central and southern Pamir is associated with tectonic exhumation of central Pamir domes. Deeper exhumation coincides with western and asymmetric drainages and with higher precipitation today, suggesting an orographic effect on exhumation. A younging-southward trend of cooling ages may reflect tectonic processes. Overall, cooling ages derived from the Pamir are younger than ages recorded in Tibet, indicating younger and higher magnitudes of erosion in the Pamir.
