Notes: [Auszug] STUDIES of population dynamics in birds have usually been concerned with comparatively small sections of a much larger population, and these small sections have been intensively and professionally studied with the view of elucidating the main factors regulating numbers. With such an approach it is ...

Notes: Summary To analyse the fibre type composition of adult dog skeletal muscle, enzyme histochemistry, immunohistochemistry for type I, IIA and IIB myosins, and peptide mapping of myosin heavy chains isolated from typed single fibres were combined. Subdivision of type II fibres into two main classes according to the activity of the m-ATPase after acidic and alkaline preincubation proved to be rather difficult and was only consistently achieved after a very careful adjustment of the systems used. One of these sub-classes of type II fibres stained more strongly for m-ATPase activity after acidic and alkaline preincubation, was oxidative-glycolytic and showed a strong reaction with an anti-type IIA myosin. The other one, however, although unreactive with anti-IIA myosin, was also oxidative-glycolytic, and only showed a faint reaction with an anti-type IIB myosin. Peptide mapping of the myosin heavy chains of typed single fibres revealed two populations of heavy chains among the type II fibre group. Thus, in dog muscle, we are confronted with the presence of two main classes of type II fibres, both oxidative-glycolytic, but differing in the structure of their myosin heavy chains. In contrast to some reports in the literature, no classical type IIB fibres could be detected.

Notes: Abstract We describe a method of learning generative models of objects from a set of images of the object under different, and unknown, illumination. Such a model allows us to approximate the objects' appearance under a range of lighting conditions. This work is closely related to photometric stereo with unknown light sources and, in particular, to the use of Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) to estimate shape and albedo from multiple images up to a linear transformation (Hayakawa, 1994). Firstly we analyze and extend the SVD approach to this problem. We demonstrate that it applies to objects for which the dominant imaging effects are Lambertian reflectance with a distant light source and a background ambient term. To determine that this is a reasonable approximation we calculate the eigenvectors of the SVD on a set of real objects, under varying lighting conditions, and demonstrate that the first few eigenvectors account for most of the data in agreement with our predictions. We then analyze the linear ambiguities in the SVD approach and demonstrate that previous methods proposed to resolve them (Hayakawa, 1994) are only valid under certain conditions. We discuss alternative possibilities and, in particular, demonstrate that knowledge of the object class is sufficient to resolve this problem. Secondly, we describe the use of surface consistency for putting constraints on the possible solutions. We prove that this constraint reduces the ambiguities to a subspace called the generalized bas relief ambiguity (GBR) which is inherent in the Lambertian reflectance function (and which can be shown to exist even if attached and cast shadows are present (Belhumeur et al., 1997)). We demonstrate the use of surface consistency to solve for the shape and albedo up to a GBR and describe, and implement, a variety of additional assumptions to resolve the GBR. Thirdly, we demonstrate an iterative algorithm that can detect and remove some attached shadows from the objects thereby increasing the accuracy of the reconstructed shape and albedo.

Notes: Summary This paper, based on a three-month visit to southern Guyana early in 1970, presents information onRupicola rupicola supplementary to that obtained byGilliard (1962) in the same area. In the course of observations at a dancing ground, a female was seen to visit a male on his court, to approach him and to nibble at his modified secondary feathers while he remained in static display on the ground. This was thought to represent precopulatory behaviour, but mating itself was not seen. Four nest-sites were regularly checked; eggs were laid between 2nd March and 25th April. A study of museum specimens shows that the moult mainly takes place in the middle of the year and almost certainly must overlap the breeding season. The female's nest-building behaviour is described. Saliva must be used to strengthen the mud used in the nest structure, since in its natural state the mud is too friable to hold together or to adhere to a rock surface. Details are given of two clutches of eggs. The incubation periods for two other clutches were 27–28 and 28 days. The fledging period was not ascertained as the young disappeared prematurely from the one nest that was regularly checked. A description is given of a 10-day-old nestling hatched in captivity. The food (exclusively fruit) recorded in samples collected from below nests and from a display ground from January to April is tabulated and discussed. 71% of the fruits recorded were from trees of four families (Araliaceae, Burseraceae, Palmae and Lauraceae) which are of general importance for neotropical frugivorous birds.
