Notes: Abstract  The 1800a Taupo eruption was one of the most complex silicic eruptions worldwide within the past 5000 years. New work on phases 3 and 4, the Hatepe and Rotongaio ashes, has identified a mappable internal stratigraphy for each, enabling detailed isopach and isopleth measurements for subunits within the deposits. The new data indicate that the vent configuration for the Taupo eruption was more complex than previously thought and involved at least three sources on a NE–SW fissure centred on Horomatangi Reefs. Phases 1–3 of the eruption were from a southwestern vent(s), phase 4 from a northeastern source, and phases 5 and 6 probably from the Horomatangi Reefs area. A separate source for the Rotongaio ash (phase 4) helps explain the contrast between the pumice-rich phases of the eruption and the dense juvenile clasts of the Rotongaio ash. The Rotongaio magma resided in a separate, initially blind conduit and was degassing prior to and during earlier phases of the Taupo eruption. This new work on the Hatepe and Rotongaio ashes underscores the importance of a detailed stratigraphic framework in deciphering extremely fine-grained fall units of large-scale sustained eruptions.

Notes: Asymmetry in the relationship between the H-2K mutant strain C57B1/6. CH-2ba (H-2ba) and the wild-type congenic C57B1/6 has been demonstrated both in MLR and serologically by haemagglutination. MLR between these strains, when B6 was the responder, was as strong as that toward allogeneic stimulator cells: H-2ba was regularly less responsive toward B6. Responses in both directions were increased, in terms of augmented proliferative responses, by prior immunization. In this context the MLR resembles that towards minor H-locus antigens rather than those controlled by the H-2 locus. Immunization of (H-2ba× BALB/c)F1 hybrids with B6 lymphoid cells induced the production of a haemagglutinating antibody not directed toward any known H-2 specificity. The B6 haemagglutinogen, termed He, was present on B6 lymphoid as well as red blood cells. Segregation studies of F2 and back-cross progeny of (H-2ba x BALB/c)F1 hybrids suggest that the response to He is controlled by two Ir genes, one of which is linked to H-2.

Notes: Alpha and beta carotene, provitamin A activity, dehydroascorbic acid, L-ascorbic acid and total ascorbic acid content of “jalapeño,”“bell,” long green/red “chile,”“serrano” and “yellow wax” peppers (Cupsicum annuum L.) at green and red stages of maturity were determined by HPLC. Effects of thermal processing on vitamin A and C retention in “jalapeno” peppers was also determined. Provitamin A activity ranged from 27.3 to 501.9 Retinol Equivalents (RE/100g). Ascorbic acid concentration ranged from 76.1 to 243.1 (mg/100g). Provitamin A activity and ascorbic acid content increased with maturity in all cultivars. Thermal processing of “jalapeño” cultivars resulted in a 25% decrease of total provitamin A activity and a 75% decrease in total ascrobic acid.

Notes: An interferometer with compensation for vibration and large scale mechanical movements has been designed and built to measure the line integral electron density along three different lines of sight through the JET divertor plasma. Overcoming the effects of a long transmission path, having an estimated 65 dB loss, requires oversized waveguide transmission lines, sensitive heterodyne detection, low loss quasioptical circuits, and highly stable sources. The sources are frequency doubled, phase-locked, Gunn oscillators producing 15 mW at 130 GHz and 10 mW at 200 GHz. Waveguide Schottky mixer diodes generate reference and output signals at an IF of 10.7 MHz and the LO Gunn diodes are phase locked to the reference IF. Corrugated feedhorns and ellipsoidal mirrors are used for beam control and polarizing wire grids for beam splitting and recombination. To minimize unwanted, direct coupling of source power into the signal detectors, Brewster angle beam dumps and Faraday rotation isolators are used in the transmit and receive QO circuits, which in turn are separated, on opposite faces of a vertical plate. Martin–Pupplet polarizing interferometers are used to multiplex the two colors into a single coaligned, copolar output beam and to demultiplex the return beam. Constant fraction discriminators are used to optimize the accuracy of the phase detectors, which have sampling and recording rates of 1 MHz and a resolution of ∼7° (0.02 fringe). © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A Bragg rotor spectrometer uses diffractors ranging from LiF (420) (2d=0.18 nm) to a multilayer mirror (Ni–C 2d=11.7 nm). The extension to longer wavelengths is particularly useful at JET, where radiated power and Zeff are usually dominated by light impurities such as Be and C, whose H- and He-like transitions lie between about 2.5 and 10 nm. A hexagonal rotor scans six diffractors sequentially and gives either full coverage of the soft x-ray spectrum (to monitor a range of ionization stages of any possible impurity), or high monochromatic sensitivity (to monitor trace impurities and give time resolution of ∼10 μs for the study of transient events such as impurity injection). A large area gas proportional counter covers a Bragg angle range from 20° to 70°, with each of its ten anodes being connected to an independent amplifier-discriminator chain, allowing count rates up to 20 MHz to be processed. Moderate resolving power is provided by a 1:600 Soller collimator. A smaller rotor is mounted with a side-by-side array of four small diffractors, and is reciprocated over a relatively small Bragg angle range to give a time resolution of 20 ms for about ten representative lines (for routine analysis of radiated power components).
