Notes: Summary There was no correlation between the quantity of exopolysaccharide produced and acetylene reduction activity by Rhizobium spp. or by Bradyrhizobium spp. (Cajanus). The exopolysaccharide-defective mutants of Rhizobium sp. strain P 116 either failed to nodulate or showed a decrease in effectiveness. The deficiency in exopolysaccharide production was corrected by the addition of purified exopolysaccharide from the parent strain, or from Bradyrhizobium sp. strain P 149 or S24 isolated from pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan) and mungbean (Vigna radiata), respectively. However, the nodules so formed were not fully effective compared to those formed by the parent strain.

Notes: Abstract The temperature distribution in two regions and the location of moving interface during freezing in a finite domain is studied numerically. The differential equations governing the process of heat transfer in two regions are converted to initial value problem of vector matrix form. The solution of this initial value problem is utilized iteratively in the interface heat flux equation to determine interface location as well as the temperature distribution in two regions. The whole analysis is presented in a nondimensional form and the results thus obtained are discussed in detail.

Notes: Abstract Exact solutions for fully developed natural convection in open-ended vertical concentric annuli under a radial magnetic field are presented. Expressions for velocity field, temperature field, mass flow rate and skin-friction are given, under more general thermal boundary conditions. It is observed that both velocity as well as temperature of the fluid is more in case of isothermal condition compared with constant heat flux case when gap between cylinders is less or equal to radius of inner cylinder while reverse phenomena occur when the gap between cylinders is greater than radius of inner cylinder.

Notes: Summary Analytic expressions for the far-field displacement both in the time and the frequency domains are obtained for the kinematic earthquake model of a rupture which nucleates at a point, grows in the form of a rectangle and stops at a later time. The spectra ofS andP waves are analyzed with the object of determining fault dimensions from the corner frequencies. The approach by which the solution of the present problem is obtained can be extended to get closed form solutions to the problem of rupture front expanding in the form of a polygon and terminating over a fault area which has the form of another polygon.

Notes: Abstract Fatigue tests carried on three sets of samples having different mean grain sizes revealed that fatigue strength is a function of mean grain size of the rock. Samples having smaller grain size show higher value of fatigue strength. Graywacke samples from Flagstaff formation having mean grain sizes of 1.79 mm, 1.35 mm and 0.93 mm showed fatigue strengths of 87%, 88.25% and 89.1% respectively. Since the mean uniaxial compressive strength also varied with varying grain size, i. e. higher mean strength value for samples having finer grain size; the fatigue strength of a rock also shows a converse relation with mean uniaxial compressive strength.

Notes: Abstract The deuteron disintegration process $$\bar v_e + d \to \bar v_e + n + p$$ is calculated at reactor energies using the antineutrino spectra given by various authors. Numerical results are presented and compared with the experimental and other theoretical results.

Notes: Abstract The differential cross sectiondσ/dq 2 for the processv μ +d→μ −+p+p is studied using realistic deuteron wave functions and closure over the dinucleon states. The effect of meson exchange currents is estimated using one-pion exchange diagrams in the static limit. Implications of our present results on the determination ofF A (q 2) from neutrinodeuteron reaction experiments are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The question of electromagnetic form factors, i.e. F 1 V versus G E V , to be used in isovector meson exchange currents in nonrelativistic calculations is critically reviewed. None of the various arguments given earlier in favour of F 1 V have been found valid. Furthermore, model dependence of theoretical calculations on deuteron threshold disintegration due to e.m. form factor fits and potential models is found to be substantial. In view of these results, relativistic effects have to be included for a clear understanding of this process in the high momentum transfer region.

Notes: Abstract A study of hyperon semileptonic decays has been made in various quark models and compared with the standard Cabibbo analysis which is found to be in good agreement with experiments. Results obtained in a quasirelativistic constituent quark model are in reasonable agreement with the standard Cabibbo analysis and show no sizeableSU(3) symmetry breaking effects. Results in other quark models which take into account theSU(3) symmetry breaking effects in the dominant form factors are similar to the quasirelativistic constituent quark model.
