    Notes: Summary The density and composition of ricefield oligochaete populations were estimated in 33 farmers' fields in the Philippines and related to physicochemical properties of the soils and agrochemical use. The spatial distribution of organisms and the investigative sampling strategy were determined from a high-intensity sampling in a single ricefield. Species diversity was low. The dominant species were Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri and Branchiura sowerbyi. The spatial distribution of populations was contagious and densities ranged from 0 to 35 000 m-2 (maximum 620 kg ha-1). Mean population density was positively correlated with soil moisture, organic matter, and the quantity of N fertilizer applied. No pesticide impacts were observed.

    Notes: Summary The impacts of N fertilizer, pesticides and green manure on aquatic oligochaetes in irrigated ricefields were investigated in experimental plots. Populations, determined by the wet sieving of soil cores, were dominated by the Tubificidae Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri. Total densities ranged from 0 to 40 000 m-2. Oligochaete numbers increased in response to additions of urea N. An inhibitory effect of carbofuran on oligochaete populations was observed during the first season of experimental pesticide treatments, but not during the following year. The green manure Sesbania rostrata stimulated population development more than Azolla microphylla. Populations in plots maintained as wet fallow remained low throughout the crop cycle. Population dynamics were associated with the crop cycle. Peak densities were achieved 30–50 days after transplanting.

    Notes: Abstract We investigated the effects of N fertiliser and pesticide applications on the population dynamics of benthic molluscs in a tropical wetland rice field. Populations were monitored for two consecutive dry seasons in selected treatments during a study on the effects of agricultural practices on the floodwater ecology of tropical rice fields. The most abundant species recorded in the ricefields were the snailsMelanoides tuberculata andMelanoides granifera. Population densities and biomass values in planted plots ranged between 0 and 1530 individuals m-2 and 0 and 1060 kg ha-1, respectively. Snails were more abundant in unplanted than planted plots (1991: 170–2040 versus 0–1040 individuals m-2, respectively). Populations in planted plots declined as the crop season progressed. Snail populations were significantly reduced by the broadcast application of mineral N fertiliser at 110 kg N ha-1. There was little evidence that snails were affected by carbofuran or butachlor applications.

    Notes: Abstract Algal, zooplankton, and mollusc populations were monitored over a crop cycle in the floodwater of a tropical ricefield subject to various N-management and pesticide regimes. This paper gives the results on dynamics of microcrustanceans and dipteran larvae. Dominant groups developed in the succession mosquito+chironomid larvae→ostracods→copepods+cladocerans. Populations of ostracods and mosquito+chironomid larvae expanded rapidly after broadcast N applications. Deep placement of N avoided the proliferation of ostracods and dipteran larvae. With the exception of chironomid larvae early in the crop cycle, aquatic invertebrates were generally less abundant in treatments where Azolla sp. was incorporated. When considered at the crop cycle level, aquatic invertebrate populations were not significantly affected by applications of butachlor and carbofuran.

    Notes: Abstract This paper is the first in a series reporting a study on the effects of N fertilizer, green manure, and pesticide applications on the floodwater ecology of a tropical ricefield. Algal, zooplankton, and mollusc populations were monitored during a crop cycle in plots subjected to various methods of N management and different pesticide regimes. This paper presents the experimental design, general features of the statistical methods for data analysis, and the dynamics of algal growth in the floodwater. Transient green algal blooms and increases in floodwater dissolved O2 concentrations were observed after the broadcast application of N fertilizer 7 days after transplanting. These effects were less pronounced after the second N application 55 days after transplanting. Photosynthetic activity in the floodwater of planted plots decreased as the crop season progressed. Mucilaginous colonial blue-green algae proliferated in the zero-N control and unplanted plots, but were inhibited by the broadcast N fertilizer and green manure incorporation. Deep placement of urea supergranules reduced the negative impact of N fertilizer on blue-green algal populations. There was limited evidence that the application of pesticides promoted the development of blue-green algal populations in the absence of readily available N.

    Notes: Abstract Modeling of soil systems is an essential approach to discussions of the historical dimensions of soil sustainability, but as yet there has been no formal testing and application of such models. In this paper we first test the ability of the CENTURY agroecosystem model to predict soil organic carbon levels in anthropogenic plaggen soils from ethnographic and historical land management information of manuring practices on the Shetland island of Papa Stour. Observations suggest that the model makes accurate predictions and can be used to develop and test hypothetical land management scenarios. Results suggest that within historic time the arable areas of Papa Stour were manured at a level above that required to maintain soil organic carbon levels, and consequently the hill-land source of organic material was overexploited with no real apparent gain. Modeled evidence suggests that short-term observations of soil organic carbon levels would indicate a greater degree of manure application than was actually required over the longer term. Successful use of the CENTURY model in this historic context suggests that it may be applicable to questions of soil sustainability in other areas of the North Atlantic region.

    Notes: This paper describes the results of an ecological-economic modelling exercise of the management of a scarce habitat, namely heather moorland. The Orkney Islands of Scotland are used to illustrate a modelling approach which could be easily applied elsewhere, and to other habitats. We describe the evolution and present condition of heather moorland on Orkney, then quantify the extent of over-grazing (leading to ecological damage) on a spatial basis. This is accomplished using a model of heather utilization and heather productivity. Critical grazing limits are then used as constraints in an economic model of farm production decisions, which enables us to quantify the minimum necessary compensation payments which farmers should be offered to offset income losses due to grazing restrictions. Such a policy is in line with European Union and UK agri-environmental policy, which typically uses payments for income forgone as a means of persuading farmers to protect environmental quality.

    Description: This paper identifies rare climate challenges in the long-term history of seven areas, three in the subpolar North Atlantic Islands and four in the arid-to-semiarid deserts of the US Southwest. For each case, the vulnerability to food shortage before the climate challenge is quantified based on eight variables encompassing both environmental and social domains. These data are used to evaluate the relationship between the “weight” of vulnerability before a climate challenge and the nature of social change and food security following a challenge. The outcome of this work is directly applicable to debates about disaster management policy.
