Notes: Abstract The complex dissipation at the wavemaker used for direct excitation of nonlinear standing waves in the vicinity of the cut-off frequency, is measured experimentally. The results indicate that the absolute value of this dissipation coefficient exceeds significantly the estimate based on purely viscous dissipation. This is attributed to the turbulent effects resulting from the vortex shedding at the discontinuities of the wavemaker surface. It is shown that incorporation of this dissipation in the boundary condition at the wavemaker as a nonlinear term in a form generally used to describe dissipation in a turbulent boundary layer, is more appropriate allowing to remove hysteresis in the value of the wavemaker dissipation coefficient. Such hysteresis is observed when a linear dissipation model is applied.

Notes: Surface water waves are generated by a paddle-type wavemaker operating at one end of a long tank. In addition to a progressing wave field at the forcing frequency, a subharmonic cross wave is generated in the neighborhood of the wavemaker. At lower forcing amplitudes there is a Benjamin–Feir instability of the progressing wave. At large forcing amplitudes, the fundamental decays rapidly along the channel. The cross wave dominates the near field and is strongly modulated on a slow time scale. During each modulation period a soliton propagates away from the wavemaker. The near-field standing cross wave undergoes a transformation into a progressing wave in the far field.

Notes: The neutral stability of parametrically excited cross-waves in a rectangular tank is studied. Model equations considered include complex coefficients describing dissipation of the side walls of the tank and at the wavemaker. The results of this study are compared with the available experimental data. It is shown that for certain experimental conditions, the dissipation at the wavemaker becomes important and sometimes dominant. Analysis of the experimentally obtained neutral stability curves and their comparison with the present theory provide an opportunity to estimate the complex dissipation coefficients.

Notes: Abstract The neutral stability of parametrically excited subharmonic cross-waves in a rectangular tank is studied experimentally. The analysis of the experimental data is based on the appropriately scaled dimensionless variables. The variation of the shape and of the location of the neutral stability curves with the mode number is studied. Certain conclusions are drawn on the basis of the present measurements regarding the relative importance of different damping mechanisms.

Notes: Abstract The response of a facility, consisting of a valveless reciprocating pump, a large settling chamber and a long straight smooth pipe, to a periodic change in the volume was analysed. The impedance of the pipe was estimated in both laminar and turbulent flow regimes under otherwise identical flow conditions. A good agreement with theory was obtained for the laminar flow. The estimate of the pipe impedance from the experimental data in turbulent flow was based on the momentum equation as well as on the measured resonant frequency of the system. These independent methods show that the inertance of the pipe has a qualitatively different behavior in laminar and turbulent flow regimes.

Notes: Abstract Measurements of water wave profiles were performed in a rectangular flume equipped with a modular wavemaker. This particular wavemaker could generate both two- and three-dimensional waves. A method is proposed to evaluate quantitatively the deviations of a spacial flow field from the two-dimensional one. Plane propagating waves, as well as pure sloshing waves with their crests parallel to the walls, were generated in the flume. In all cases the measured amplitudes were compared against linear theory predictions.
