Notes: Abstract With a cw visible laser, the method of photon-burst correlation is used measure atmospheric crosswinds. A scaling law, including the effects of atmospheric turbulence, for performance evaluation of both laser Doppler (LDV) and laser time-of-flight (LTV) velocimeters, is introduced theoretically and established experimentally with field experiments. Crosswind measurements in the night at a range of 500 m with a low-power argon-ion laser are reported. The measured signal particle arrival rate is consistent with the predicted arrival rate based on the scaling law. In addition to the use of higher laser power, it is suggested that with proper inclusion of signal photon bursts resulting from the simultaneous arrival of several particles, routine operation of this type of laser velocimeter for long ranges, up to 1000m, should be feasible.

Notes: Abstract Methods for simultaneous measurements of more than one flow velocity component using coherent Raman spectroscopy are proposed. It is demonstrated that using a kilowatt broad-band probe pulse (3–30 GHz) along with a megawatt narrow-band pump pulse (∼100 MHz), coherent Raman signal resulting from a single laser pulse is sufficient to produce a high-resolution Raman spectrum for a velocity measurement.

Notes: Abstract Using the Colorado State Na Lidar, surges of stratospheric aerosols caused by the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo have been observed from August to December 1991 over Fort Collins, CO (40.6° N, 105° W), showing a clear increasing trend in stratospheric aerosol activities. These aerosol layers are characterized by the backscatter-ratio profile at 589 nm for altitudes from 12 km to 40 km.

Notes: Intermolecular spectral densities measured by two independent experimental techniques, time-domain optical-heterodyne-detected Raman-induced-Kerr-effect spectroscopy (OHD-RIKES) and frequency-domain stimulated gain spectroscopy (SGS), for three molecular liquids (benzene, carbon disulfide, and chloroform) are compared. The agreement in the high-frequency (interaction-induced) portion of the spectrum (20–150 cm−1) is quantitative. The relative merits between time-domain and frequency-domain coherent light-scattering techniques are discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Depolarized Rayleigh-wing spectra of simple liquids, including CS2, chlorinated methanes, benzene and benzene derivatives have been recorded using stimulated gain spectroscopy. To adequately interpret these spectra of simple liquids, a dephasing dynamical contribution in an intermediate time scale is needed in addition to a slower Debye reorientation relaxation and a faster broad inhomogeneous oscillator. The curve-fit dynamical characteristic parameters of these simple liquids are tabulated for comparison. The microscopic molecular properties, shape anisotropy, and dominating moment of inertia are found to play an important role in determining the rates of interaction-induced dynamics; smaller shape anisotropy and smaller moment of inertia give rise to faster collision rate in the intermediate frequency regime and faster oscillation in the higher frequency regime, respectively. In the low frequency region, the shear viscosity (a macroscopic property) of the liquid and the general molecular shapes dictate reorientation diffusion; for molecules within a family, the Debye relaxation rate is faster for liquids with smaller viscosity and shape anisotropy. Halogenation of benzene breaks the symmetry of the benzene ring giving two distinct oscillator frequencies. In the case of iodobenzene, three principle molecular axes are clearly distinct; it is necessary to use two Debye relaxation rates and two broad inhomogeneous oscillators to fit its stimulated gain spectrum.

Notes: Three types of amorphous-titania films prepared by ion- and electron-beam techniques have been annealed thermally. An amorphous-crystalline transformation is found in each of these film types at around 350 °C. Its resulting microcrystalline structure and the exact transition temperature appear to be dictated by the rutile microcrystalline seed present in the as-deposited films under different deposition conditions. An amorphous film with a weak rutile seed crystallizes at a lower temperature into the anatase structure, while a film with a relatively strong rutile base crystallizes into the rutile structure at a somewhat higher temperature. It is demonstrated that Raman spectroscopy is a simple and effective tool for characterization of these submicron-thick amorphous films and for the dynamical study of such a phase transformation. Accompanying this amorphous-crystalline transformation, a two-order increase in elastic light scattering is noted implying optical degradation associated with microcrystalline boundaries. In addition, results of the anatase–rutile transformation at a temperature near 900 °C are presented.

Notes: Abstract A new two-channel ground-based high-spectral-resolution Rayleigh-Mie lidar and its operation is described. Upon the inversion of data collected during the night of August 14–15, 1990, with this unique lidar system (553.7 nm), vertical profiles of atmospheric parameters including temperature, potential temperature, pressure and density, as well as aerosol parameters including backscatter-ratio, extinction coefficient and backscatter phase function are determined.

Notes: Abstract The Doppler-free line shape of the 6s 2 1 S 0 − 6s 16p 1 1 P 1 transition at 553.5 nm in natural Ba in the presence of an argon or helium buffer gas has been measured at 744 K for gas pressures from 0.2 to 100 Torr. Using the measured data for pressures above 5 Torr, the broadening rate coefficients for the half width at half maximum (HWHM) are determined to be (4.9±0.5)⊗10−9 and (5.0±0.5)⊗10−9 s−1 cm−3 for helium and argon respectively.
