Notes: Abstract The structure of a liquid crystal of 4-cyano-4′-n-octyloxybiphenyl (C21H25NO) is determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. The compound crystallizes in the triclinic crystal system with unit cell parameters a = 7.322(1) Å, b = 12.693(3) Å, c = 20.393(2) Å, α = 92.45(1)°, β = 99.96(1)°, γ = 99.35(2)°, and space group $$P\bar 1$$ . The structure is solved by the direct method and refined to R = 0.057. Two independent molecules are located in the asymmetric unit. No short intermolecular contacts are observed in the crystal packing.

Notes: Abstract The expressions for current-voltage characteristics of single injection current flow in solid state cylindrical diode containing significant amount of deep traps have been derived with the help of regional approximation method. It is shown that the complete current-voltage characteristic may be divided into well separated current-voltage regimes and the last regime is the pure space-charge-limited trap free regime. The role of deep traps is specially explained in the complete span of current-voltage characteristic.

Notes: Abstract The average profile of Forbush decreases, produced by eastern-, central- and western-region solar flares is obtained separately by superposed epoch analysis for the periods 1966–1969 (qA 〈 0) and 1971–1979 (qA 〉 0). It is observed that the recovery of an average Forbush decrease from the maximum depression level is faster for the situation qA 〉 0 than for the situation qA 〈 0. This is in accordance with expectations from the drift theory. It is also observed that the drift effect is more pronounced for western-flare Forbush decreases which, of course, have a smaller magnitude compared to eastern- and central-flare Forbush decreases. The average profiles of simple and complex type Forbush decreases are also obtained separately for three periods 1965–1979, 1971–1979, and 1981–1987. It is found that the average profiles of simple and complex type Forbush decreases observed during the period 1965–1969 and 1971– 1979 are quite in agreement with drift theory. The anomalous behavior of average Forbush-decrease profiles during the period 1981–1987, especially in simple type Forbush decreases, is also explained by a drift current sheet tilt model.

Notes: Abstract The influence of two types of high-speed (HS) solar wind streams - coronal-hole and solar-flare-associated - on cosmic-ray intensity has been studied using the neutron monitor data of three stations for the period 1972–1984, which includes the year 1980 of solar field reversal. The cosmic-ray depressions associated with the coronal-hole streams are much smaller than the typically Forbush-like depressions. No spectral difference is found in the Forbush-like decreases between the periods before and after the polarity change.

    Notes: Abstract The process $$\pi ^0 \to \lambda _\gamma \bar \lambda _\gamma $$ is investigated as an alternative to $$\pi ^0 \to v\bar v$$ . It is shown that the experimental bound on the branching fraction for missing energy (in the form of $$\lambda _\gamma \bar \lambda _\gamma $$ and/or $$v\bar v$$ ) may be understood in terms of $$\pi ^0 \to \lambda _\gamma \bar \lambda _\gamma $$ for the kinematically allowed photino mass, if the squark mass is 〉8 GeV.

Notes: Summary The (Ca+Mg)/K ratio was found to have a relationship with the resistance of various crops to downy mildew and root-knot diseases. Predisposing factors such as host nutrition, prior infection by other pathogens and plant age changed (Ca+Mg)/K ratio. (Ca+Mg)/K ratio calculated from the published data of other workers also exhibited this relationship. It appears to play a role in several host-pathogen systems.

Notes: Abstract Shoot apices ofCarica papaya were multiplied in vitro on solidified nutrient media supplemented with α-naphthyl-acetic acid and 6-benzylaminopurine. The micropropagated shoots were inoculated in vitro, through a stem wound, with a sporangial suspension (1.2×104 sporangia ml-1) ofPhytophthora palmivora. The symptoms exhibited by the shoots in vitro were similar to those described previously for infection of the whole plant in the field. The time taken for the host tissue to become brown and to wilt and the time to sporulation of the pathogen were all recorded for each shoot of four varieties of papaya challenged with each of ten isolates ofP. palmivora. Significant differences were observed between host-pathogen combinations for these variables and host-specificity was detected amongst the isolates ofP. palmivora. The time taken for the shoot to wilt was positively correlated with the time to sporulation of the isolated but both these variables were negatively correlated with the time to browning of the shoot. In vitro selection for disease resistance will be useful during breeding programmes involving papaya genotypes which are maintained through clonal propagation.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract
Notes: Abstract The kinetics of oxidation of glycine with aqueous chlorine has been investigated. The reaction is first order with respect to both molecular chlorine and glycine and inverse first order with respect to H+. The effect of various factors on the initial rate has also been studied. The kinetic parameters have been calculated and a possible mechanism is proposed.
