Description: This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of different levels of garlic (Allium sativum) on growth survival and nutritional characteristics of goldfish (Carassius auratus). For this purpose, 180 goldfish with an average initial weight of 1.18± 0.08 g were introduced randomly into 12 aquaria (50×30×40 cm) in 4 groups, with 15 fish in each group. Treatments were fed on a basal diet for one week, followed by experimental diets for eight weeks. Garlic powder was added at levels of 0 (Control), 0.5, 1 and 1.5 mg kg^-1 to commercial diet. At the end of the experiment, growth and survival rates and feed performance were evaluated. There was no significant difference in growth rate and feed efficiency between treatments, although they were better in the 0.5% level. The highest survival rate was achieved in the 0.5% treatment that showed a significant difference compared to the control diet (p〈0.05). The best growth performance and feed efficiency were obtained in fish fed the 0.5% garlic powder diet.

Description: In order to introduce the best strain of Iranian Artemia cyst to larvicultural feeding of aquatic animals, biometrical characteristics of Artemia cysts and newly hatched nauplii of four different geographical regions of Iran (Maharloo Lake, Fars province, Meyqan Lake, Central province Urmia Lake and Fesendooze pond West Azarbaijan province) were determined. Whole cysts and decapsulated cyst diameters, chorion thickness, dry weight and total length of newly hatched nauplii were measured under stereomicroscope equipped with Motic 2000 software MLC – 150C, attached to a monitor. The obtained data were statistically analyzed by one way ANOVA and tested with multivariate Duncan test. The results showed that Artemia urmiana cyst has a significantly larger diameter and nauplius total length than the other cysts (P〈0.05) (285.4 ± 0.53 µm and 511.8± 1.27 µm, respectively). Although the chorion thickness of the Meyqan cyst is higher than the others there are not any significant differences between them (P〉0.05). The smallest cyst diameter (276.8± 0.58 µm), nauplii total length (491.2±1.17 µm) and consequently the largest number of cysts per gram were obtained from Fesendooz. Due to the suitable size of Artemia samples for shrimp post larvae, ornamental and marine fish larval stage feeding it could be a good candidate for replacing imported expensive cysts.

Description: The Astacus leptodactylus specimens were collected from four sites of Aras reservoir, North-West of Iran and examined for the epibionts during 2009. Protozoan epibionts from ciliophora (one genus and seven species) and tracheophyta were isolated from the cuticular surface of different body parts of narrow-claw crayfish, A.leptodactylus. Seasonal prevalence of infestation was determined in 394 individuals of A.leptodactylus. The facultative ciliate Tetrahymena pyriformis was identified on the gills and gill haemocoel with 0.5% prevalence. Futhermore , epibiont fouling organisms such as Epistylis chrysemidis (52.3%) Vorticella similis (45.9%) Cothurnia sieboldii (68.5%) Pyxicola annulata (66%) Chilodonella spp.(0.5%) Zoothamnium intermedium(57.1%) Opercularia articulate (20.6%) and Podophrya fixa (8.6%) were also isolated from 13 body parts of A.leptodactylus. The presence of Chilodonella infestation is the first record of this genus on freshwater crayfish species. The comparison of biometrical data of the epibionts showed no significant differences in prevalence of seasonal infestation between sampling sites. The current work represents the first documentation for the presence of protozoan epibionts on A.leptodactylus in Aras Reservoir, Iran.

Description: This study was performed to compare the efficiency of six microalgae namely Dunaliella tertiolecta, Tetraselmis suecica, Nannochloropsis oculata, Chaetoceros sp., Chlorella sp. and Spirolina sp. on the growth, survival rate and reproduction efficacy in Artemia urmiana in laboratory conditions. Artemia cysts were harvested from Urmia Lake and hatched according to the standard method. Live microalgae were cultured using the f/2 culture medium. Artemia survival was determined in treatments on days 8, 11, 14, 17 and 20. A highly significant difference (p〈0.01) were found among three microalgae in terms of length growth, survival rates and reproduction characteristics in A. urmiana. In spite of higher length growth of A.urmiana fed on N. oculata than A. urmiana fed by T. suecica but survival and reproduction in the latter was better than the first treatment. In general, D. tertiolecta was more efficient than other microalgae examined in the present study on A. urmiana concerning not only to growth and survival but also to reproduction mode. So, it is preferred to feed A. urmiana.

Description: The surface morphology of resting eggs of Anostracan species from East Azerbaijan Province of Iran and that of Artemia urmiana was compared using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Anostracan fauna of East Azerbaijan temporary pools were determined as follows: Chirocephalus skorikowi (Chirocephalidae), Branchinecta orientalis (Branchinectidae), Streptocephalus torvicornis (Streptocephalidae), Branchinella spinosa (Thamnocephalidae) and Artemia urmiana (Artemiidae). However other species may also exist in these pools. Therefore, evaluating the morphology of these cysts by SEM appeared to accentuate that study of cyst ornamentation is a valuable taxonomical factor and more importantly that it can be used to identify the species even when the adults are not present at the time of sampling or in the absence of water.

Description: Artemia has been widely used in aquaculture as a suitable live food. The presence of highly unsaturated fatty acids is a key factor that determines the nutritional value and marketing of Artemia for shrimp, marine larvae, sturgeon and ornamental fish industries. To determine the variation in nutritional content in cysts, decapsulated cysts and nauplii of Artemia from three different biotopes of Iran, were tested for their protein, lipid, energy, and fatty acid profiles, particularly essential fatty acids. The cysts collected from Urmia, Maharlou and Meighan lakes, were rinsed, processed, decapsulated, hatched and then analyzed for proximate and fatty acid composition using standard methods. Statistical comparisons of the results revealed significant differences not only in proximate composition but also in fatty acid contents (p〈0.05). The highest mean (±SD) level of protein (60.5±3.3 %), lipid (18.60±1.1%) and energy contents (5448.3±10.4 Kcal/kg) were observed in Instar I nauplii hatched from Urmia Lake cysts, Instar I nauplii hatched from Maharlou Lake cyst and Instar I nauplii hatched from Urmia Lake decapsulated cyst, respectively. The highest content of DHA (0.78 mg/g DW) was observed in nauplii of cysts from Urmia Lake whereas, it was around zero in other samples. The highest level of EPA (24.24 mg/g DW) was measured in nauplii from Maharlou Lake decapsulated cysts and the lowest (0.24 mg/g DW) was observed in Urmia lake cysts. The results revealed that the nauplii from decapsulated cysts of Maharlou Lake Artemia contained significantly higher levels of EPA and n-3 HUFA compared to others. Therefore, it is recommended to use it in aquatic larviculture.

Description: Carotenoid pigments are responsible for pigmentation of edible fish muscle and skin of ornamental fishes. Accumulation of this colorful substance is important in fish marketing and there is a need to add carotenoids in cultured fish. In this study, Carassius auratus feeding was undertaken with 3 treatments including concentrate, freezed fairy shrimps (Phallocryptus spinosa) and concentrate with the same ratio and freezed Artemia urmiana and concentrate with the same ratio for 90 days. The amounts of total carotenoids were determined in the skin of different treatments at the end of the experiment using spectrophotometer model WPA, UK, astaxantin, canthaxantin and beta-carotene using HPLC model Younglin , UK. The results revealed that the most skin pigmentation obtained from the diet contained fairy shrimp. Also, carotenoid pigments were significantly higher in goldfish fed with live food supplement comparing concentrate one. The results showed a significant difference among different diets as in concentrate, concentrate and freezed fairy shrimps, concentrate and freezed artemia diets. Amounts of Mean (±SD) total carotenoids were 1.09± 0.3, 3.90 ± 0.021 and 2.07 ± 0.05mg/100 , astaxantin were 84.57±0.23, 205.82± 0.40 and 102.24± 0.63 ng/g and canthaxanthin were 0.24± 0.01, 35.79± 0.17 and 30.64 ± 0.2 ng/g and beta carotene were 34.73± 0.11, 138.78 ± 0.2 and 69.77 ± 0.15 ng/g of fish skin, respectively. Therefore, Fairy shrimps can be used as a suitable replacement for artemia to enhance color of ornamental fish. This is an environmental friendly food with the lower cost compared to high cost synthetic pigments.

Description: Early recognition of diseases and pathogens transmitted from freshwater crayfish provides the possibility of early intervention and management in this regard and decreases the mortality and morbidity from infectious diseases. Hence, The awareness from presence and incidence rates of WSSD, YHD, IPN viruses are very important due to they are the most important zoonotic and infectious viruses in aquatic animals and crustaceans .Also , they cause serious reduction of the amount and quality of freshwater crayfish in the world. For this region, this study was carried out for the first time to detect the mentioned viruses in freshwater crayfish from North West of Iran. In this study, a total of 725 crayfish (145 specimens from each water resource) were sampled during 2013 -2014 from dam reserviors including : Aras ( West Azarbaijan, Caspian Sea Basin),Ardalan ( East Azarbaijan, Urmia lake basin) , Kazarj and karaghyeh (East Azarbaijan, Caspian Sea Basin),Shorabil(Ardabil, Caspian Sea Basin). All specimens were transferred to aquatic animals health and genetics laboratory of Iranian Artemia Research Center as live individuals under controlled condition. In order to virus isolation, the gill, Hepatopancreas, Hemolymph and pleopods were tested using PCR and RT-PCR methods. Suspicious samples were sent to the reference viral diseases diagnosis laboratory of Iranian veterinary organization.Screening results showed the probability of no contamination in freshwater crayfish from studied water resources. Therefore, it is recommended continuation of screening mentioned viruses by the authorities placed on the agenda.
