    Notes: Abstract We develop a kinetic theory that describes the behavior of a monatomic four-level laser when the atom is fixed inside a high-Q optical cavity. Such a statement of the problem is similar to that used in the experiment of G. M. Meyer, H.-J. Briegel, and H. Walther [Europhys. Lett. 37, 317 (1997)]. The condition that the number of photons is large and the photon fluctuations are small is employed. We show that by selecting the parameters of the periodic electromagnetic pulses exciting the atom one can achieve regular pumping of the upper laser level and generate sub-Poissonian laser light. We also discuss the reasons why the statistical pattern of the radiation differs from the micromaser pattern with regular injection of atoms.

    Notes: Abstract We used an optical sensor combined with a Mach-Zehnder interferometric waveguide and optical fibers to measure slight changes of aqueous sugar concentrations. The merits of this sensor are simplicity, reliability, high sensitivity and continuous monitoring. The technique is based on the fact that the refractive index of sugar solution changes with the concentration of sugar. In the experiment, one arm of the interferometer is clad with glue and is thus isolated from the sugar solution. The other one is exposed to the sugar solution. A single mode fiber is directly glued onto the interferometric waveguide, to guide the light into the interferometer. If the concentration of sugar covering the waveguide changes, the phase of propagating light in the exposed arm will be changed, while the phase in the other arm is fixed. Hence the output intensity from the interferometer is directly related to the concentration of the sugar solution. The result of this experiment yields the relation between the sugar concentration and output signal. From 0% to 1% concentration of sugar solution, there is only a 1.4×10−3 refractive index difference. Two sets of experimental data have been obtained, showing a linear relation between the sugar concentration and the output signal from our sensor. This sensor could be used for continuous monitoring of blood sugar in the human body.

    Notes: Abstract An interferometer in which an atom traverses two identical micromaser cavities in succession is proposed. Depending on the preparation of the cavity fields, the probability for finding the atom in a definite final state displays Ramsey fringes or not. If the initial cavity fields are such that the state of the atom between the cavities can be determined, then the Ramsey fringes disappear, as is required by the principle of complementarity.

    Notes: Abstract It is found that a coherent state of the cavity field can be generated in a micromaser with injected atoms in a coherent superposition of the upper and lower states. The dependence of the density matrix elements of the field on the number of injected atoms indicates that due to the same initial atomic coherence the emission of separately injected single atoms in the cavity is a cooperative process.

    Notes: Abstract Two-classes of phase-space spin quasi-distribution functions are introduced and discussed. The first class of these distributions is based on the delta function construction. It is shown that such a construction can be carried out for an arbitrary spin s and an arbitrary ordering of the spin operators. The second class of the spin distributions is constructed with the help of the spin coherent states. The connection of the spin coherent states to the Stratonovich formalism is established and discussed. It is shown that the c-number phase-space description of quantum fluctuations provides a simple statistical picture of quantum fluctuations of spinoperators in terms of random directions on a unit sphere. For quantum states of the spin system the statistics of these random orientations is given by non-positive spin quasi-distribution functions. It is shown that the application of these spin quasi-distribution functions to the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlations provide an insight into the quantum theory of measurement.

    Notes: Abstract We develop a nonlinear theory of lasing without inversion in a four level atomic system. The appearance of lasing without inversion is the result of atomic coherence induced between two lower levels by a Raman process. We consider both nondegenerate and degenerate configurations and obtain expressions for the linear gain and the laser output intensity. We identify the conditions for ideal lasing without inversion.

    Notes: Abstract We consider the nondegenerateA quantum beat laser, and investigate the possibility of lasing without population inversion when coherence is established, between the lower levels, by applying a strong microwave field. For a specific example we calculate how much coherence may be established between the lower levels using microwave coupling. Analytical calculations are presented for both the open and closed three level atomic systems, using perturbation theory up to third order in the optical fields. Taking the linear equations, we show numerically how gain may be achieved.
